We stayed in in Knysna for the first time. A friend of ours recommended Amanzi Lodge and we can only thank them because this was the very best advice we could have been given. Margret and Helen made our stay most pleasant. Recommendations for dinner or lunch were perfect and they also made the reservations for us. Having breakfast on the balcony was pleasant and most of all the food was excellent. Rooms were bright, clean and spacious. We loved the wardrobe which was spacious, so that we were able to hang all of our clothes. The bathroom was also clean and spacious and had plenty of amenities and was very well thought out. We stayed in Room 2 and enjoyed our stay very much and we would love to come back and stay a bit longer than only the two days we were there this time.

Room Tip: We stayed in room 2 with lagoon view was wonderful but also room 7 with a garden view where our adul...

This is a perfect place to stay in every way, fabulous setting on the lagoon, friendly and relaxed owners who provide gorgeous breakfast, wonderfully comfortable rooms and a seemingly personal attention.

Stayed here early April 2013 for a night and had a great time. Helen and Sue were very welcoming. The room was spacious and very comfortable. Breakfast was really good too!

Walks with MOJO on the island were ace!
Apart from staying with my parents in PE this was the best value for money on our trip through SA!

Thanks go to Helen and Sue and the rest of the staff.

Ha ha!! - We're not sure who enjoyed the island walks more - you or Mojo! She's been giving us the "poor me eyes" ever since ;) So glad that you enjoyed your whistle stop stay in Knysna and hope you both had an absolutely blast during the last leg of your SA holiday!

We've now stayed in quite a few guest houses during our four month trip around the Southern Hemisphere. Amanzi is up there with the very best.

Some of that is about the spacious, well-furnished and equipped room; the warm lounge with its deep sofas and log fire; the splendid breakfast in which a cooked element complements an extensive buffet; the superb views across the southern part of Knysna Lagoon to The Heads - dramatic whichever state of the tide and whether with mist rolling through the narrows or at sunset. All that gives a real edge, but what makes Amanzi special is the exceptionally warm and informed welcome from Helen, Sue (Helen's mother) and the staff. Many, many thanks.

As you can tell, we very much enjoyed our two night stay and, but for the relentless pressure we placed on ourselves to move ever westward, we'd have stayed. Knysna and the surrounding area are pretty good too!

Wowza!! High praise from seasoned travelers :) Thank you. And meeting you served as a huge inspiration - mum is now planning her "grey nomad" adventure much in the same vein!!
Well here's hoping that of all the places you've visited that Knysna will be one of ones that you'll return too. Bon voyage!

We had a family gathering in Knysna this past weekend. My wife and I, my brother and sister stayed with Sue and Helen at Amanzi fo four nights. It's brilliant. The rooms are exquisite, the views unbeatable and Sue and Helen extremely friendly and helpful. Walking around Leisure Isle is great and off-season, very quiet and tranquil.

We are regular visitors to Knysna and will always stay at Amanzi in future.

Room Tip: We looked at four - they are all terrific.

We absolutely loved having you all at the lodge for your mini-reunion! It's a wonderful pat on the back when regular Knysna visitors chose Amanzi as their new base, and we look forward to seeing you all again :) All the best!

There is a saying that I love - Life is not measured by the number of breaths you take, but by the moments that take your breath away... That is Amanzi for me, it leaves me breathless.. You couldn't wish for anything more, from the moment you arrive you feel welcome, excellent service, beautiful rooms, comfortable beds and majestic views. You start your day with a fantastic breakfast, and then just a hop, skip and a jump onto the beach to soak up the morning sunshine.. You really couldn't ask for a better location, 15 min drive to the Waterfront and shops, the famous Heads just around the corner..

Amanzi Island Lodge is definitely the best place to stay if you are looking for total relaxation, this is what a holiday should be like, wish I could have stayed longer can't wait to go back :)

Thank you to Helen and the team at Amanzi

Room Tip: The lagoon facing rooms are spectacular :)

I said this in a previous response, but it bears repeating - There are still moments when I catch myself gobsmacked! Knysna, the guests, the staff, the lodge - it all continues to take my breath away to this day :) And the magic in the air is infectious!
Thank you for your lovely review. It sounds as though you have fallen in love with this little place too.

My review is long overdue, so may not reflect the current owners who are "back", as i've read from browsing recent posts. As such, in spite of the negative points below, i've still given a positive rating, since they mostly pertain to the staff who seem to be no longer there? (and my experience seems consistent with another review from Oct 2012).

The location and rooms are great -- super comfortable bed and spacious rooms/bathroom. I loved the decor of the room as well (the paper mache rhino is so cool). The breakfast was also delicious and a great start to our Garden Route trip.

However, the downside in our experience last fall, was that there were some oversights in service. Our welcome wasn't exceptionally warm -- it felt like she was simply going through the motions. One of the spoons provided for the tea/coffee in the room was not washed, and was literally stuck to the cup it was in (obviously from it's previous use). The bathroom also didn't have any hand soap.

Also, we also tried using the common phone by the staircase, and found the battery or connection was messed up, so couldn't call out. When we told the managers about it the next day, so they could address it, they replied that they already were aware of it....(so then i wondered, why didn't they fix it then...)

Well, with the new staff in place, i sincerely hope the phone issue has been addressed, and i'm glad to hear the recent reviews have been so positive.

As the team who started Amanzi and worked so hard to make it what it is today, it's obviously very upsetting to read a review like this. Cathy and Simon had taken over so that we could have a desperately needed break, but unfortunately under their management things began to slip. We realised that the guesthouse was in a sharp decline and discontinued their services in November 2012. We have worked incredibly hard ever since to bring Amanzi back to her former glory (in cleanliness, maintenance, and most importantly the genuine warm welcome that all our guests receive!)
The review upsets us not only because we've worked so hard to rebuild Amanzi, but mostly because you have confirmed our fears - that guests were unhappy while we were away. While we know that one can't please all of the people all of the time, we certainly try our best, and the issues you have raised are inexcusable.
It gives credence to the mantra that "the people make the place" and we are so sorry that you couldn't enjoy Amanzi at its best. We hope that we'll have the opportunity to treat you to the real Amanzi magic, and sincerely apologise in whatever way that we can.
Helen, Sue and Margaret.

P.S. The phone was still broken when we arrived in November!! We promptly removed it and on the rare occasion that one of us is not there to assist, guests are welcome to use the (working) phone in the reception to dial out ;)
