“Great, relaxing family stay”
Reviewed March 23, 2013

We stayed 5 nights at Amber Guesthouse in March13. It was a really great and relaxing stay. The owners Janet& Derek are very well taking care of their guests. We felt kind of home easily. Child-friendly.

Room - Stayed in the suite room which has a large living room where they have prepared a bed for our little 4Y old son with great views over the Knysna lagoon. Master bedroom also good size and very comfy beds with also view out to the lagoon. TV (though we didn't use), fridge in the room. Very nicely and bright decorated. Big bathroom with bath and separate shower. Everything was extremely clean and well maintained.

Breakfast - was awesome (still missing Derek's omelette). We could sit outside by the pool (small but good for refreshing dip) with great views over the lagoon. Breakfast has a huge choice for everyone's taste. Various sorts of eggs, bacon, sausage, tomato, etc. Cereal, toast (white+brown), fresh (and tasty) fruitsalad, Janet's homemade bread or muffins, cold cuts, jam, other spreads, juice, milk, coffee/espresso, tea. Very good choice!

Location - nicely tucked in a residential area. Very quiet and safe neighbourhood. Great views from some of the rooms and the pool-deck over the lagoon. Just 5min drive to Knysna centre, 3min to the Heads or Leisure Island (nice beach there for kids with no current, shallow waters, sometimes the seal living in the lagoon shows up at the beach which is exciting for the kids...and adults). Followed Derek's and Janet's advice on restaruants. One is Mo's which is just 2min drive in big garden, then also drove 5min to either Thesen Island or to the Harbour. You can from Knysna easily do daytours along the Garden Route to Wilderness (c 40min), Plettenberg (c 25min) or even Oudtshoorn (c 75min). We recommend Knsyna Elephant Park (not only for kids as you can walk hand in trunk with them which is nice), Tenigkwa Retreat (for wild cats of various sizes, can also walk with the cheetah's) and also Bramon Windery for a nice lunch amongst the wine grapes.

Others - Good advice from Janet what to do and where to go. Just ask and you will get great advice for whatever is on your mind. What we also very much liked as a great idea (and though we have travelled extensively across the world so far haven't had this at all) was that they have asked most of the restaurants for their menus and took copies of them. You can get it in the breakfast room and decide even in the morning where you would like to go for the food taste that is on your mind...saves you the usual running around, asking for menues at the entries. Our son missed Abigail, the boxer dog, quite a bit after we left.

Would come back for sure! Thanks Janet+Derek for a superb stay! Please keep going with this very personal touch! Janet+Derek really put all their efforts into this place and we liked it very much.

Very nice and quiet place in residential area outside of city center. Very convenient for visits to the Heads or other nearby popular attractions. The lagoon view is great (breakfast + sunset). Friendly owners who were very helpful. A great place to stay in Knysna.

My partner and I have been travelling for two months, and have stayed at over twenty places. After each stay, we have ranked the accommodation, giving a score out of 10. Amber Guest Lodge is only the second place we stayed at that scored a perfect 10.

The guest house is beautiful - the rooms spacious and nicely decorated, in a simple, modern style. Our room had a king size bed, which was very comfortable. The room had a fridge, a safe, a fan, a tv and DVD player, and the hosts had DVDs that you could borrow (which we did). There was free wifi which worked perfectly. Each room opens up to a lovely patio area, with a pool and incredible view.

The host was great, and gave us lots of useful advise for things to while we were there, restaurants to go to, etc.

The breakfast was amazing - especially the fruit salad that was prepared each morning. Best breakfast of our trip for sure.

The only thing that is lacking is AC in the rooms - but this wasn't a problem at all, as even the very hot days cooled down a lot at night. Our room never felt too warm.

A car is basically needed, as it is a 5-10 minute driving distance to the centre of town. This wasn't a problem for us, and presumably wouldn't be for most people, travelling along the Garden Route.

Overall, the place is incredible, and the value excellent. We loved it so much that we added a third night. I would not hesitate to recommend this place.

The house is very good located, close to The Heads and not far from Knysna Waterfront

Very nice & friendly hosts. Janet gave a lot of infos & recommendations for our daily tours. Breakfast was delicious, especially the omelette.

We booked this Lodge whilst on the road. On arrival we thought it seemed too far out of town, but how wrong we were! The location overlooking the lagoon is great, and very handy for visiting the Heads and it's viewpoints, Coney Glen Beach, and Leisure Island, as well as town (8 minutes by car). The rooms are spacious and fully equipped and with the most comfortable bed we have slept in. Janet and Derek are excellent hosts and provided us with all anyone could want - including good advice about r restaurants, walks, things to do and see. Breakfasts were a real highlight - there was everything one could hope for....... Unlimited Muesli's, porridge, cold meats, cheeses, full English, toast, tea, coffee, juices, jams and marmalades........a truly great variety, and during our four days there we never needed lunch! The terrace and small pool are ideal for relaxing with a glass of wine or a cold beer at the end of the day. We will certainly be recommending Amber to anyone visiting Knysna.......if you are going there, look no further than Amber Guest Lodge

Room Tip: Room 5 is a family room....more spacious and slightly more expensive.

Unfortunately we only had one night at Amber Guest Lodge on our short trip to Southafrica with a hudge program. Our room was wonderful, warmly decorated and the bed was the best on our whole trip. We felt welcome from arrival to departure. Cloesed to Knysna Heads and city, but in a quite and lovely area.
Thanks to Janet and Derek for everything. When we come back to Southafrica we will definitely come back to Amber Guest Lodge!
