We stayed 5 nights at Amber Guesthouse in March13. It was a really great and relaxing stay. The owners Janet& Derek are very well taking care of their guests. We felt kind of home easily. Child-friendly.
Room - Stayed in the suite room which has a large living room where they have prepared a bed for our little 4Y old son with great views over the Knysna lagoon. Master bedroom also good size and very comfy beds with also view out to the lagoon. TV (though we didn't use), fridge in the room. Very nicely and bright decorated. Big bathroom with bath and separate shower. Everything was extremely clean and well maintained.
Breakfast - was awesome (still missing Derek's omelette). We could sit outside by the pool (small but good for refreshing dip) with great views over the lagoon. Breakfast has a huge choice for everyone's taste. Various sorts of eggs, bacon, sausage, tomato, etc. Cereal, toast (white+brown), fresh (and tasty) fruitsalad, Janet's homemade bread or muffins, cold cuts, jam, other spreads, juice, milk, coffee/espresso, tea. Very good choice!
Location - nicely tucked in a residential area. Very quiet and safe neighbourhood. Great views from some of the rooms and the pool-deck over the lagoon. Just 5min drive to Knysna centre, 3min to the Heads or Leisure Island (nice beach there for kids with no current, shallow waters, sometimes the seal living in the lagoon shows up at the beach which is exciting for the kids...and adults). Followed Derek's and Janet's advice on restaruants. One is Mo's which is just 2min drive in big garden, then also drove 5min to either Thesen Island or to the Harbour. You can from Knysna easily do daytours along the Garden Route to Wilderness (c 40min), Plettenberg (c 25min) or even Oudtshoorn (c 75min). We recommend Knsyna Elephant Park (not only for kids as you can walk hand in trunk with them which is nice), Tenigkwa Retreat (for wild cats of various sizes, can also walk with the cheetah's) and also Bramon Windery for a nice lunch amongst the wine grapes.
Others - Good advice from Janet what to do and where to go. Just ask and you will get great advice for whatever is on your mind. What we also very much liked as a great idea (and though we have travelled extensively across the world so far haven't had this at all) was that they have asked most of the restaurants for their menus and took copies of them. You can get it in the breakfast room and decide even in the morning where you would like to go for the food taste that is on your mind...saves you the usual running around, asking for menues at the entries. Our son missed Abigail, the boxer dog, quite a bit after we left.
Would come back for sure! Thanks Janet+Derek for a superb stay! Please keep going with this very personal touch! Janet+Derek really put all their efforts into this place and we liked it very much.
