“Fantastic Views of the Lagoon”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed February 16, 2007

The Old Cape Road is located just off the N2 highway about 2kms from Knysna waterfront complex.

On arrival, we were greeted by a younger chap who works afternoons & evenings on the front desk. He was very friendly and helpful and showed us to our room. The majority of rooms are accessed from a verandah, from which there are great views of the lagoon with Knysna town on the left and the heads a few kms in the distance. There are tables and chairs along the verandah where you can sit out, have a drink and enjoy the views.

The rooms & en-suites are well appointed and clean with ceiling fans as opposed to aircon (this didn't cause us any discomfort). We met the owners Barbara and Ernest at breakfast, who were both lovely, friendly people who helped us plan our day's activities. Breakfast was good quality with the usual mix of cereal/fruit buffet and cooked and is served in a room which has fantastic views over the area.

The only downside to staying at the Old Cape Road is the traffic noise from the neighbouring N2 below. Most guest houses along the main road will suffer from this but the N2 is a busy road, Knysna itself can be a bottleneck, and freight traffic runs throughout the night.

To be fair, The only time we found it an issue was during an early evening drink on the verandah between our day out exploring and going out for a meal as this coincided with rush hour! As we were only staying for two nights and the guest house was full, we didn't mention it to the hosts as there is little they could have done about it. To put it in context, if you want complete peace and serenity from your accommodation, the traffic will be a problem but if you are used to living in towns or near main roads or you tend to spend the minimal amount of time at your accommodation because you're out and about, you will take this in your stride and enjoy the many positives this guest house has to offer.

In Summary, I would recommend that Old Cape Road but bear in mind the traffic noise and ask if you can have a room which is more shielded from the road noise.

Wherever is available to stay in Knysna, and there is plenty, you will not find nicer people than Ernest and Barbara at The Old Cape Road Guest House. Originally booked into the excellent Room No. 10 suite on the top floor, which had breathtaking views over the lagoon, but was a little noisy from the road traffic, so Barbara offered the separate apartment as it was empty. It was exquisite! A great comfortable place to stay, lovely breakfasts, all complimented by the perfecct mine-hosts, who couldn't do enough to make you welcome.

This is a beautiful place to stay, built on the side of the hill, with an amazing view of the Knysna Heads from the verandah just outside our room. The room was very nice and had real comfy beds. We enjoyed our stay very much and would recommend this Guest House to everyone.

We stayed 1 night at the Old Cape Road in July. It was off-season and I think we were the only guests. We were given a georgeous room with a jacuzzi bath, sitting area, private balcony for about 320 rands per night, which was really steal. There was no breakfast offered due to off-season, but we had a fridge in our room and ate in the little sitting area. The owners were very nice and parking was safe and on-site. We felt it was a little too far to walk into town at night (day would've been OK). The only negative thing was the traffic noise. We weren't disturbed while sleeping, but during day and when sitting on balcony was quite loud. This will likely be true for any of the several inns or bed/breakfasts which line the road behind the lagoon.

We stayed at the Old Cape Road Guest House for 2 nights in January 2006. It is absolutly lovely - spotlessly clean and decorated to a very high standard. The views off the verandah and balcony are stunning. Safe "off the road" parking. The breakfasts were perfect with a good choice of freshly cooked food with a stunning view from the dining room. The only downside was it is just above a very busy road and we had difficulty sleeping the first night. The owner was symathetic and moved us without any debate to one of the rooms on the first floor where the patio door to the balcony was double glazed and much quieter and Wow! you should see the bathroom - so try to get Room 8 or 3 which is on the lower floor but quieter as it has a vestibule entrance to the bedroom. There is a lovely Italian restaurant about a 100 yard walk up the road from the hotel.
Service is excellent with the owners unobtrusive but always there to help. We loved it!
