Owner description: Built by Thomas Bain in the 1860's, the Prince Alfred Pass (R339) is a dirt/gravel mountain pass between Knysna/Plettenbergbay and Avontuur/Uniondale. It is a scenic route with spectacular views and interesting flora. Please note that this is not a shortcut from the Langkloof to Knysna/Plettenbergbay. Having been built about 150 years ago, parts of this historic pass is very winding and narrow. In some areas the surface of the road is eroded and there are a few potholes along the way.

“Don't use it unless you have to”
3 of 5 bubbles Reviewed February 26, 2014

Not for the nervous. Can be scary, very narrow in parts, if it has been raining definitely stay away unless you are an experienced 4 x 4 driver.
Fabulous scenery, when you have time to look whilst gripping the steering wheel. Never ending up and down on very very poor rocky surfaces.
I'm quite an experienced driving and would never do it again, I think that it took us 4 hours plus to do 70 kms. Knocks hell out of your hire car!!

“Breathtaking views but scary”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed February 24, 2014

We have been over the Prince Alfred Pass today so I can confirm that the road is open and passable with care. This is definately not a short cut from Knysna to Uniondale but it is a amazing route with spectacular views. However it is not for the faint hearted as in places it is a narrow dirt track and it is fair to say it is more suited to 4x4, however we were in a VW Polo and we survived unscathed. Will add photos when I get home.

“Knysna to Colesberg”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed February 3, 2014

As others have said, we took this thinking it was a shortcut between Knysna and Uniondale on the way up to Colesberg.

It was a surprise, but a very welcome one. I really enjoyed the drive and would certainly do it again.

“An experience!”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed December 31, 2013

We did the pass from Uniondale side to Knysna. The views were spectacular but at times the road was very narrow and we just held our breaths that no vehicle was coming from the other side!
