We had read mixed reviews about this hotel but decided to go ahead an book mainly as there wasn't much accomodation left due to short notice.

We booked a superior twin room and as promised it did over looked the lagoon (water jetty to be exact). Booking was a real performance, faxing copies of credit cards and ID, very backward indeed. Room was much smaller than most we had stayed in (smaller than a UK Travelodge) , no room furniture i.e. small sofa or easy chair. The so called balcony is a sliding glass door with railing directly attached to it, there is no room to stand outside at all, more or less a large window as such. Room safe did not work. Water for washing was a weird yellow colour but assume safe for washing in (not drinking of course) and there was a smell of sewage each morning from the bathroom. Clothes hanging space extremely limited. Public car parking is available outside the hotel (free so they say but you have to pay a man to "look after" your car) as in most places so it seemed. Hotel secure parking is 25 Rand / night, another rip off we felt as car park security was not tight at all.

Breakfast was excellent, service in a large restaurant and staff always helpful and freindly. Pool is small but useful and the hotel is very clean. Conclusion: very over priced much better to be found in town and along the lagoon. Would not use this hotel chain again as other of their locations (Cape castle in cape town was also poor)
Tip: visit the Heads for a great sea view, best beaches at Buffalo Bay.

We stayed 2 nights here Feb11/12th 2007. Very convenient for Tsitsikamma National Park and the Storms River mouth which is a great day out. As other reviewers have noted it is a little anonymous (more like a Travelodge) and seems to be largely occupied by coach touring parties (group trips to The Garden Route) and both nights we were there I counted 4 or 5 large coaches parked outside.
We wre a little unlucky with the weather whilst we were there and consequently can't comment on the pool facilities although the lagoon view was fanatastic even in a downpour.
We went up to Plettenburg and had dinner at The Plettenburg Bay Hotel (open to non residents) which was wonderful and has fantastic views over the bay. If returning to this area I would either book The Plettenburg Bay Hotel or if a little further south I'd find a good quality B & B in Wilderness, which has a fantastic beach. I notice 1 reviewer praised "34 South" restaurant on the waterfront - I'd just like to diaagree most strongly! I was served a "seafood" linguine which I wouldn't have given my cat (if I had one!). It was just slop and the next night we found the Plettenburg Bay Hotel for a superb dinner!

This is a boring but pleasant hotel.
It has no faults, is effectively in the Knysna 'waterfront centre' so eating is varied and straightforward. Many shops.

Room size is just about acceptable for its class, but the bed is king-sized. Clean neat and tidy done professionally. The pool is minute and effectively unusable.

If you just want a bed for the night to see Knysna then it does its job admirably.

Note that parking costs 25R/day.

No fridge. Tea/coffee making equipment.
Good aircon.

Staff well trained and helpful.

We have just returned from a touring trip of Cape Town, The winelands and the Garden route and stayed at this hotel for two nights.
We found it perfectly positioned on the Quays so that it was easy to take a walk, eat out in really good restaurants and walk back safely at night. We ate at Drydock and JJ and enjoyed excellent meals.
The hotel was clean and the rooms were well eqipped for a short stay. It isn't a luxurious hotel but it is modern and if you are travelling it's all you need.
Breakfast was excellent with plenty of fresh fruit and a cook station for fry up. It does not serve dinner but why would you want to eat in when there are so many good eating places within a few yards of the hotel! These restaurants will deliver to the hotel if you really can't manage those few steps.
If I were to return to Knysna I wouldn't think of going anywhere else.

Having spent 2 nights at this hotel in January my partner and I were very sad to move on from this hotel to our next stop. It has a perfect location, right on the lagoon within metres of the lovely little marina complex with shops and some excellent restaurants.
Our lagoon facing room was well worth the additional small charge and was a beautiful room, very large, very light and airy.
The pool area is spotlessly clean and probably the best pool area we experienced in the seven 4* SA hotels we stayed in.
Breakfast here was excellent, buffet style with a wide choice.
My only criticism would be the lack of atmosphere in the bar area at night, but as most guests had such hectic schedules for this beautiful part of the garden route; a nice meal in the marina and early mornings meant that this really wasn't a problem!

After reading some of the reviews on this Hotel, I was even thinking of cancelling my reservation. However, upon arrival we were really pleasantly surprised as it is in a fantastic position backing onto the waterfront with all different restaurants and boat trips. Rooms were sufficient - not over-spacious but very clean and the whole of the hotel was immaculate! Our room backed onto the car park but there was absolutely no problem (one overlooking the waterfront would have been an extra £30 per night - we decided not worth it as we weren't in it 24 hrs). During the end of the day it was quite eventful seeing the musicians and sellers plying their wares to the tourists returning from George on the train (the station is literally straight across the road)and it was very quiet at night . The staff in all areas were extremely helpful and you could not fault the choices at breakfast. The pool area was nice and clean. We had 5 nights at this hotel and would recommend it - it deserves the 4 star rating. Knysnia is quite busy with tourists (which we like) and there are some nice places to visit around the area. Most people we met said that as a base they preferred it to George.

We booked a standard room online, requesting a lagoon view. At the time of booking we were offered no choice of room and there was no description of the room. From the photo's the hotel looked clean, simple and pleasant with a nautical theme.

A friendly welcome at reception soon turned to abject horror when we got to our room. Apart from it obviously being furnished for business use, the curtains were drawn which made first impressions gloomy and uninviting. Upon opening the curtains it got worse -- we overlooked the car park!

The previously friendly staff refused to even enter into discussion regarding a refund, insisting that they would keep the full 3 nights money we had paid up front. The only option we had to try and salvage our stay was to pay an additional sum (nearly double what we had already paid) to upgrade to a basic lagoon facing room.

With regard the facilities itself, our upgraded room had no ventilation -- a quick shower resulted in rivers of condensation dripping from all the walls, mirrors and even the windows at the far end of the room. Someone else's hair in the bath remained there throughout our stay (we showered). We were so put off that we did not attempt to use any further facilities or try the food within the hotel.

The immediate surroundings, the well promoted Waterfront, was overpriced, catered to the lowest common denominator and was (like the rest of the town) a great disappointment. We had only two good finds: the metalwork gallery in the Waterfront shopping avenue, and the "34 Degrees South" restaurant.

South Africa was exceptional, and we're already talking about a return trip, but I will never return to Knysna nor will I ever set foot in any hotel within the Protea Hotels group.

Plettenberg Bay is where we're going next time!
