Owner description: The well-known Elephant Walk at Diepwalle starts and ends at the Diepwalle Forest Station, the "Mecca" of the Knysna forests. The walk offers a number of route options (7km, 8km & 9km). The area is regularly visited by the Knysna elephants but the chance of sighting of these animals is very slight. Currently there are only one elephant left in the forest. The trails are open between 6h00 and 18h00

We visited this place on recommendation andf were so pleased that we did. It is so natural . After the elephants had eaten our buckets of fruit they just wandered off and the keepers let us just follow them and stroke them and really interact with them. This is a must.

We were taken around in a small group which was nice, but the overwhelming feeling throughout was one of being patronised. The tour guides are friendly, but seem to be at the lower end of the intelligence spectrum. We spent half an hour looking at the barn where the elephants sleep whilst being asked questions as if we were remedial five year olds.

The Elephant Walk part of the tour is a little contrived, and the group takes it in turns to walk in front of the elephant whilst the trunk is placed in the outstretched hand - bit gimmicky.

The demonstrations are great and it'a amazing how well the elephants understand simple commands, and the chance to get up close to the elephants is definitely worthwhile.

We didn't do it, but one couple had opted for the elephant ride - definitely don't bother - the rest of the group stands around watching while the couple are led around a field on top of an elephant - definitely not worth whatever extra amount they paid.

The tour ends with another condescending talk about elephant anatomy delivered in as slow as way as possible. Once the cringing is over you are led through the gift shop where they make you sit through a terribly edited video of everything you've just done set to some awful background music. Definitely try and sneak out before this - it's extremely painful.

Personally I love animals so the terribleness of the tour was worth it for he chance to interact and get close to the elephants - if you're not that bothered though, avoid this as you will be disappointed.

It was a priviledge to be able to walk with recued elephants that otherwise would have no future.
