Our B&B recommended this place and it did not disappoint. It's about 10 minutes from town and just down the hill if you are staying in Brenton.

Their menu is a large board that they place in front of you on an easel. We had appetizers, dinner and dessert.

Appetizers were the beautiful tasty shrimp and a plate from their salad bar.

For dinner I had the ravioli and my wife had sole. The sole has bones, but when you are done You have a perfect fish skeleton. quite impressive. Both were very well prepared and presented.

The chocolate dessert was quite rich and perfect to share.

We are not drinkers, so without wine and beer the total bill came to $60 USD.

Even at the end of January this restaurant is every night still fully booked. No wonder because the owner and chef Peter Vadas really knows how to offer you some well prepared and exquisite dishes. Seating and decoration is basic. We enjoyed the nice antipasti, duck and calamari. Besides the good food, service is excellent and Pete’s wife Viv runs a tight show. Also a nice personal touch that they have some time for a short chat while leaving. Highly recommended.

Pembreys is a serious contender for one of the best restaurants in the world. Our meal here was not just our best in our entire SA trip, but one of the most memorable meals of our lives. While the service and ambience are good, the food is simply outstanding, and worth a significant detour, or a special trip.

We had dinner at Pembreys, which works as follows - they have a range of appetizers that are served buffet style, and charged by weight (yes, this doesn't sound fine dining, but Pembreys manages to pull it off with élan), and a daily a la carte menu. The appetizers were stunning not just because they were brilliant in taste, but because all 16 of them were vegetarian - a mind-boggling fact in a strongly meat-biased country (and a very welcome relief for us). Our main courses were uniformly excellent, as were the desserts, something many fine dining restaurants which do great appetizers and mains get wrong. Overall, this was a perfect meal. Please do eat here if you are anywhere in the vicinity, but remember to make a booking in advance as they are often sold out.

PS Another great plus (for us at least) - even though this is a fine dining restaurant, they were happy to have our toddler along.

Thank you for taking the time to give us this review. Although we have "fine dining" awards we certainly do pertain to be in this category but we are a typical Bistro from the dishes we serve to the simple decor, cook and blackboard menu! You mentioned your child and may we say that it gives us great pleasure when the children eat our food as we do not offer "kiddies" dishes.

This is actually across the lagoon from Knysna but definitely worth the effort. We booked late and were lucky to get a table. The food was great, the choice huge, staff friendly etc. Definitely one to try.

We chose Pembreys based on Trip Advisor ratings. We took a taxi as it is out of town and that worked well. The restaurant has a homey decor and was well patronized. The experience was totally diminished by a server who took a negative attitude towards us, ignoring us regularly and serving our food with barely-concealed disdain. The meal was fine -not outstanding - but the service was the complete turn-off.

We find it difficult to accept your description of "disdainful" service as our two Servers also cook - all the salads, vegetables and pastas and are proud of the food that they serve. You remonstrated that the dishes were coming out the kitchen too fast and Jen then asked us to slow down the service to your table - so you may have felt "ignored" and we got the balance wrong???
