my wife and I stayed for two nights 23 &24 may 2014.
Unique hotel. Was originally a power station supplying power. Cleverly renovated to a modern 5+star hotel and yet retaining the old charm

We stayed in the Oyster Suite. Wonderful.

Manageress Ms. Liesel and staff including the domestic staff were very attentive, friendly and efficient.

The food was very good. Compliments to the chef.

Enjoyed our stay.

The photos don't do this hotel justice. It is amazing to stay here the rooms and views are awesome the area which it's located are perfect has everything you could ask for on a honeymoon trip. Upon our arrival we were upgraded by the manager which was very generous. The way the hotel is built around the power station is truly remarkable. This place is a must and will def come back

Dear Chants03
So pleased we could make your honeymoon stay with us so special. As you quite rightly said, we have one of the best spots in Knysna, within 20 meters of the canals on Thesen Island.
Upgrading you was a little bonus that we could offer, as a little gesture from the Hotel. Please don't wait too long till you revisit us. Feel free to recommend us to any of your family and friends travelling our way.
We have lots and lots of activities and attractions to show you in and around our beautiful little village of Thesens Island and Knysna.

We spent just one night in Knysna on our way back to Cape Town and found the Turbine Hotel a funny place to stay. Good location (very quiet and comfortable on Thesen Island), very good restaurant (Island Café) and a lovely room (205 - the Oyster Suite). The way the old Power House was refurbished as a hotel is simply amazing. The love to detail is beyond my words. We can only highly recommend this wonderful place.

Room Tip: The Oyster Suite (room 205) is brilliant, but the other rooms (as far as we could see) are very nice...

We recently spend a night at this very spectacular hotel. What makes it so special is the way the hotel was constructed around the old machinery and old sawmill. It is interesting and well worth a visit. The staff were very friendly and the rooms very comfortable. The linen is of high quality and always something I rate high. The breakfast is also very big and delicious

Room Tip: View of the lagoon

Dear Yike
Thank you for your kind comments. The Turbine Hotel is truly unique as an accommodation option. The fact that there is so much of Knysna's history in this building makes any visit a real treat.
On top of that, we have succeeded in combining an industrial theme with elegant appointments in all the rooms. The real bonus, is all of this is just 20 meteres away from the waters edge.

Please come back and visit us again soon.

Spent 2 days here as part of our garden route tour. We had a fabulous room which overlooked the pool and up the canal behind the hotel. The designer/architect of this hotel deserves to be awarded for their imaginative use of the original features and how they have used it in the layout of the hotel. My husband loved wandering around reading all about the history of the hotel and looking at the old machinery.
We ate in the Islands Cafe on our first night and the manager kept checking up to make sure we were enjoying ourselves as we were the only 2 in the restaurant until another couple joined us - it was out of season. I can honestly say I had the best steak ever - beautifully presented and cooked to perfection. The breakfasts were just as good - a big thumbs up to the chef and kitchen staff.
We also used the spa and had 2 great treatments.
All the staff were professional and friendly and the hotel is well placed to explore the area either on foot, bicycle or car. For those interested in beer the local brewery was just opening a new outlet within walking distance which we enjoyed visiting.
Highly recommend for anyone visiting the area.

We are all so happy that you have enjoyed our very special little hotel. Being a restored power station and a national heritage building, presents a wonderful opportunity to show off a part of Knysna's history that was for so long a hidden secret.
I will pass on all the wonderful compliments that you have given to the chefs and to that waiting staff. They all work very hard, but enjoy bringing a special brand of service to all our guests.
Please be sure to contact us whenever you may visit again, or feel free to get family or friends to give us a call should they be travelling the Knysna and Garden Route area.

We have just spent a weekend at the Turbine and were completely blown away by the way in which the original machinery from this converted power station has been incorporated into the design - it made for something interesting to look at at every turn. The rooms are well designed and stylishly appointed with some really interesting features, and lovely views out over the Knysna lagoon. The breakfast buffet and cooked choices were excellent, if not quite as sophisticatedly presented as some places we have been too. The lemon poppy seed muffins were really really good! I had an excellent meal in their Island Cafe restaurant one evening, and when my husband's main course wasn't to his satisfaction this was extremely professionally dealt with, which to my mind is a mark of very good customer service. Portions were very generous too. Definitely a place to recommend.

Dear Susan S
Thank you so much for the very complimentary review on Turbine Hotel. We have such a special building to show off. so much history of power stations could have been lost if all the machinery and plant had not been meticulously restored and intergrated into the design of the 24 room hotel.
The rooms were designed with a lot of thought to be functional, but at the same time fit in with the "industrial chic" theme throughout the hotel.
I am really happy that you enjoyed the Food that our new chef Andrew has been producing. Lately the reviews of breakfast through to dinner have been very positive, with many locals coming back time and time again.
If you, your family or friends are in the country again in the near future, they would be most welcome to give us a call, so we could look after them.

The hotel is unique as it has all the workings from its previous life. The service and attention to detail is what lets this hotel down. We were greeted at the hotel reception desk, but not offered the glass of welcome port that the next guests were. The reception chap did not think of helping me with my suitcase until we had begun our journey up to our room. I declined his help as it was an after thought. The rooms are clean and compact. You can here the people talking in the next room quite clearly. We stayed in the Yacht room. The service in the restaurant is slowish and we were given a table that had not been fully set, also not the best option available and I was quite annoyed to see non hotel guests placed on a better table, who then read the menu and got up and left 3 minutes after sitting down. The food however was very tasty and the saving grace. There is not much around this island part of town, as this seems to be an area that is still developing.

Dear FoodiePlymouth
Thank you for your feedback on the Turbine. Your comments are currently being followed up on, as we always emphasise to our staff that service starts from the moment the guest walks in the door. All guests are welcome to drinks on arrival and luggage taken to the rooms by one of our porters. In the Restaurant, guests aret given a choice of where they would like to sit. most of the tables face directly onto the lagoon just 20meters away from the dining area.
I am surprised that you found not much to do near the hotel. Turbine Water Club at the hotel offers pontoon trips on the lagoon, canoeing, kayaking, and whale watching trips. If you want to stick to dry land, we have 6 bicycles to explore the Island and waterfront area of Knysna town. Knysna Heads is a lovely 5km flat cycle from the hotel. Thesen Island Harbour town has a variety of restaurants, boutiques and quirky little shops offering everything from art, to antique timepieces.
