“Bad lodge, nice surrounding.”
Reviewed January 10, 2012

Our lodge (Flax) was very dark, sticky and humid due to the dense planting around the cottage. It smells musty. Maybe other rooms are better. Also the pool is very small. Nevertheless good breakfast, very nice and lovely constructed garden, friendly staff.

Room Tip: Choose not room "Flax".

This place was recommended to us by Tony Cook Adventures and what a find. Firstly the service is absolutely superb and they have great knowledge of the local area, restaurants and activities. Knysna is a great base too when seeing the Garden Route.
Our room, decorated with stunning South African items, had a lovely terrace which due to the bamboo and very lush environment made it quite private and tropical. This place is really quite unique and an experience that should not be missed. The Chocolate pancakes are very tasty too. The staff/owners could not do enough to assist with our travel requirements and organised a fantastic safari for us at Quatermains Camp. Thank you to Bamboo.

We really loved being here - so relaxing and what a treat to be upgraded to the honeymoon suite - where we made the acquaintance of Mona (she meows a lot) - a chocolatepoint Siamese. She slept on our bed the first two nights and purred nonstop. I had a sealpoint Siamese in my youth, so loved reconnecting with this gorgeous cat. Jayney, Gordon, Preston and Amber were very hospitable, the lodge is in a beautiful part of Knysna - love that restaurant at the Heads, so hope to be back.

Sadly when we moved back to our "original room", Mona did not follow - possibly because it's closer to where the dogs are - however it felt as if we were sleeping in a forest which was very relaxing.

Kind regards
Claire Snibbe and Rael Kassel

To preface, we booked this hotel based on a recommendation from friends in Cape Town since we had never been to Knysna (we live in San Diego, CA).

Upon arrival Amber walked us through the hotel and showed us to our room. Her sweet and casual demeanor made our 6 hour drive from Cape Town fade away and we were immediately both relaxed and happy to be there.

Given that we didn't book a specific room, we got to see a few and picked one that made us so happy that we didn't care that it rained for a full day while we were there. It was so comfortable and inviting (see pics) - everything you want in a vacation spot.

We eventually met the rest of the "family" and were so impressed with their kindness and down to earth attitude that we would highly recommend this hotel to anyone. In all honesty, I am a bit of a hotel snob (according to my wife) so I promise that if you pick the right room for you at Bamboo, you will absolutely love it.

Things to know:
You do need a car to get around.
Ask for restaurant recommendations - they know what they are talking about.
Breakfast is good - eat at the hotel.
Check out their amazing "made in SA" products - especially the wool boots.

Room Tip: Our favorite room: Treetops

Stayed at The Bamboo last week after reading the excellent reviews on Trip Advisor....the staff were so helpful and we used the bikes one day for a very pleasurable ride to Knysna on cycle paths. We had the famous BBQ on our first night....the food was delicous .We did the springtide evening cruise when we were there which we booked ourselves and although we enjoyed it we all thought it was far too expensive and there wasnt much food ....not value for money. The Bamboo on the other hand was excellent value for money and I really felt like we were staying in a tropical forest or jungle....so lush and green and tranquil and every room was very private...we did get lost several times trying to find our way back to our room! loved the honesty bar and wine wonderful.
Dont stay in a large posh impersonal Hotel....STAY AT THE BAMBOO....you will not be disappointed

My fiance and I won a trip to Knysna for three days through SA Weddings, which included a whole bunch of activities and three nights stay at Bamboo in their honeymoon loft suite. As expected I looked it up before we got there, but none of the pictures I saw prepared me for how beautiful it was. The service we received from the moment we won the trip, was only exceeded by the service we received the whole time we were there! After 5 min it felt like we were home between family. Our room was absolutely stunning and the surroundings were unbelievably beautiful. This will definitely be our number one choice for accommodation in Knysna going forward and a MUST stay for anyone traveling that way! All our activities were taken care of for us by Bamboo, but our stay there was by far the best activity of the weekend!

My husband and I stayed at Bamboo last week with my parents and we had a fantastic time. Our rooms were beautifully decorated and extremely comfortable (the bed was HUGE!). The lush gardens in which the various rooms are set instill a feeling of calm and tranquility over the whole place. Our breakfasts were filling and delicious with a variety of options to choose from. We also had our 16 month old son with us and it appears that bamboo regularly caters for the needs of small children with a high chair being presented at breakfast time and a babysitter offered for us to spend some welcome adult time. Incidentally, if you do need a babysitter Cicely is marvelous! The best thing by far about bamboo though, has to be their attention to detail and the personal touch. We were made to feel so very welcome by the owners Jaynie and Gordon, and Preston was wonderful, making us feel like we'd known him for years. If you enjoy feeling you are surrounded by nature, even when staying in a town, and like you are a member of the family, this is the place for you!
