Description: We are ile de pain 2.0, a team of authentic artisans and devoted individuals; foodies, fundis, artists, professionals and dreamers, all waiting to welcome you to our magical cafe. We are committed to honest food and superlative service, upholding heritage and embracing evolution, supporting traditional farmers and local suppliers, developing people and creating community. Our cafe dishes offer a superlative level of honest sophistication in flavour and creative visual presentation. Each dish is lovingly and mindfully prepared using simple, fresh and beautiful ingredients that we hand select. We bake bread - good, honest bread that tastes the way it ought to. Our patisserie creates rustic yet refined desserts that offer a balance of delicate and decadent. We cultivate relationships with valued local growers who produce in small quantities and are entirely devoted to their land and craft. ile de pain is a place to gather, making friends of strangers. We find our guests respond to the energy of the cafe, and in turn fill it with life, adding to the unique experience that it is. Our new light and airy, open-plan layout encourages patrons to witness our team at work and understand the way in which we lovingly prepare “real” food.

“Always worth the wait”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed February 23, 2013

We had breakfast here a few times over the December holidays and while you always had to wait for a table, it was always worth it. The food is simple but in the best possible way. The freshest, tastiest ingredients combined with coffee that could only have been brewed by angels! It's also impossible not to walk away with loaves of bread, tarts, bread knives and cookbooks tucked under your arm.

If you've never tasted their lemon brioche, you haven't lived - I dream of it every Sunday morning now that I'm back home. And know that once the weather creeps towards winter and soups start bubbling on my stove that I'm going to wish I had campangola bread to make croutons from. Can't wait to go back.

“Wonderful food”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed February 16, 2013

We have just spent a lovely lunch at Ile de Pain in Knysna. The location is lovely on Thesen island. Although I believe the island is more bustling during SA's holiday season. But still: there was no wait and a nice enough crowd. The menu has all sorts of goodies: I had the chicken Shish kebabs and I think the taste was just perfect. Meat was tender and well cooked and the glaze ws mouthwatering. An excellent lunch dish. The steak on bread was excellent, too. I was with an olive oil intolerant person and we checked before we ordered, The meat was done with sunflower oil so that was no problem. Unfortunately, the accompanying salad did have a dressing with olive oil. I understand it is an uncommon request but we'd ve been even more raving about this place if they'd thought our request a little more through. Especially since they mention it on the menu. However if you have no hangups or allergies you will most certainly enjoy this place a lot. We will make sure to be more directive and specific in the future.
The desserts are very attractive and most tasty. I had the chocolate brownie which was ice and creamy on the inside, topped with pecans.

“Lovely atmosphere and good food !”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed February 3, 2013

Perfect meeting place to catch up with an old friend for breakfast, casual but lovely atmosphere really buzzing at most times. Service was prompt and friendly and our orders were dispatched in a short time, food was as good as it always is no matter what is selected from the menu, that's why this is a place that can be confidently recommended to all and will always be the first to come to mind when selecting a great meeting and eating place in Knysna - well done Ile de Pain !
