“The perfect holiday retreat”

This was our second stay at the Protea. We choose the accommodation because of it's quiet location and superb views over the lagoon. On both occasions we stayed in the two bedded chalet which has a large wooden deck where a substantial breakfast is served each morning. Each chalet has a car parking space. The 2 bedded chalet has several steps leading up to it, a thing to bear in mind for those less mobile. Overall accommodation has everything you need for a relaxing stay. For an all round stay the Protea Guest House would be hard to beat

We stayed here for just 2 nights but wished it was for longer. The accommodation was first class. Our host “Adri” was extremely helpful and friendly, the breakfast on our verandah was super.
We will return for a longer stay.

If you are looking for privacy in a subtropcal garden next to the Indian Ocean along the Garden Route - you will find it at the Protea House in Knysna.

It is located in the oldern part of Knysna, up the hill... with a wonderful view towards the Indian Ocean, three chalets are surrounded by subtropical plants with a wooden verandah where you will get a delicious homemade breakfast.

The chalets have few bedrooms, a full equipped kitchen with a launch.

We've just finished another fantastic holiday in South Africa and don't want to keep Protea Guest House a secret any more..!!
We based ourselves (with 2 small children) at Protea Guest House for approx 10 days, with a few days away in the middle to visit the Tsitsikamma National Park.
We stayed in 'the Loerie' chalet (there are 3 chalets situated on a hillside garden, separate from the main house) and it had everything we needed - television, music, heater (although we only needed to use that a couple of times), microwave, fridge etc. - this was the largest of the 3 chalets and easily accommodates 4 grown ups.
The view from the chalet was fantastic and it was great to sit on the open deck with a glass of wine (and a bit of biltong!) in the evening, and sit and enjoy the home-cooked breakfasts in the morning (absolutely delicious - and the owners are extremely accommodating re times etc too which is a bonus with small children who can be up early!). The views are great from up there and you can see over the Knysna lagoon, but even just watching and listening to the birds in the garden is a joy (if you're not running after the children, that is..!!).
It was great value for money - the rates were very reasonable, especially given the substantial breakfasts - and we will definitely go back there again!
(The owners have a Bull Terrier dog which might be a bit frightening for some people as I believe they are not banned in some countries, but we were assured that she was very friendly, and within days our children were best friends with her and sitting on her back playing horses!! She is kept at the main house though and you don't have any contact with her unless you want it).

  • Liked — The private accommodation, the breakfasts, the views and the accommodating owners.
  • Disliked — A steep walk up the hill from town (but which was good too!!!)
