“What a Disappointment! Definitely not 5 star!!!”
1 of 5 bubbles Reviewed November 18, 2008

What a disappointment! If there was ever an instance of clever photography, then this is definitely the case here.
What they fail to tell you is that there are 2 properties in front of this house, which affect one’s view. The outdoor photos on their website have been taken from a low angles to disguise this. We were on the top floor and there is very little privacy. The stairway has glass windows so everyone can see into your balcony and also there is no real divide between the Royal Honeymoon and the Pilot’s View Penthouse, so again there is no seclusion. You can see from the pictures, the impact that the house in front has on the panorama. I dread to think how dark the other 3 bedrooms are, considering they are 2 floors lower!
You may also notice that there is a frosted glass brick wall, which looks great in the pictures, but is actually an attempt to hide the house next door, which is more elevated and overlooks the balconies.
One of the main draws to this property for us was the idea of a Jacuzzi on the balcony. We felt this would be romantic. Unfortunately this was broken during our stay and despite repeated requests for this to be fixed, no resolution was forthcoming and no compensation was offered despite our room then becoming the equivalent to the Captain’s room, which is at a cheaper rate.
On initial inspection the rooms may look top quality, but as can be seen from my pictures, the finish is very poor.
Also, beware their laundry policy: it states one basketful can be done for 35R. When we were checking out the owner said the bill was 80R. She stated she had put the rate up, and not got around to changing this on the room information. This may sound insignificant, but it does sour the whole experience even further.
Out of every property we stayed at in South Africa, this was the only one we felt uncomfortable in, and this was from the second we set foot on the property. We felt like we were a reluctant but necessary hindrance to their everyday life. To try and portray the atmosphere projected by the Alexander, the following is an excerpt from their room guide:
“Face cloths have been provided for the purpose of make up removal. Please refrain from using any of the towels provided. An amount of R50.00 will be charged per towel for any stain removal”.

Alexanderhouse, Owner at The Alexander, responded to this review, November 23, 2008
First of all i would really and truly like to express my deapest concerns and shock to your comments on my privately owned Guets house, and i would also like to be given the oppertunity to clarify a couple of your statements.

I am Wayne Alexander the owner of this outstanding award winning 5 star property. Personally I take great pride in running my Guest House.

I personally prepare the meals and interact with our guests every day. The Alexanderhouse is a GUEST HOUSE and not a HOTEL, I do live on the property at all times 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. Not once did you bring any of your other points to my attention but that the Jacuzzi wasn't in operation. You were explained clearly why the jacuzzi was switched off. I can see you fail to explain in your comments that the Entire Cape was experiencing bad rains, Thunder storms and Gusting winds of over 50Km per hour for the entire week and the little time you spent with us.

I'm also terribly sorry if you didn't understand this when it was explained to you clearly and persaonally by myself and my staff a couple of times that the reason why we kept the covers off of our jacuzzi's and kept them switched off was due to the bad weather. Not to mention that you could also have been struck to death by lightning being in the jacuzzi during our thunder storms which were predicted for the entire Cape that whole week.

At the alexanderhouse we strive to make all our guests feel 100% relaxed and made to feel 100% at home and safety is our main concern. We also strive to make your holiday an unforgetable experience with us.

We are well aware that we won't be able to please every-one but we surely will go the extra mile for any of our Guests to make sure you are happy at all times. I'm terribly sorry if we haven't done so in your eyes.

One unhappy couple out of 350 very happy couples is NOT A BAD RESULT AT ALL in a year, and i personally think our results speak volumes for it's self.

I find it very hard to digest and believe that our glass brick walls no where near your suite where you stayed on the other side of the house which gives us privacy from our next door neigbors. A small blank cover removed by the electrician to do some electrical work, and then replaced, Jacuzzi not operational due to gusting winds, thunder storms and rain. The FROSTED glass windows on top floor stair landing where no one else goes but yourselves and you can't see through them as they are frosted. A charge of R5 extra per load of washing were a major deciding factor of a terrible holiday experience for you and your wife.

As we are in a suburb on top of the mountain cliff edge not far from town in actual fact only 5km. We are not the only house in our suburb, and carefull town planning has also made provissions for the house infront of us off to the side to not obstruct much of our views. Your photo was taken from the entertainment level below your suite. Which is the wrong impression to give. I think our photos give a better understanding to future guests.

We have also been told by every single guest besides yourself that our web photos are exactly what you would find when you arrive and even more.

You never once brought any of your other dissapointing points to mine or my managements attention. If you had we would have made arrangements to try fullfill your wishes to the best of our abbillity. I unfortunately can't knock down any glass brick walls.

We personally ask all our guest every morning at breakfast if they were happy and if there was anything that you weren't happy about. You seemed very happy no complaints.

Your accommodation account was 100% correct and your extra charge of the laundry was only R5 per load. You had 2 loads of washing and therefore were charged the R10 extra. If it makes you feel better then i will reimburse you your R10. All price changes were made to the room directory before you checked out. Sorry if you failed to check this on your departure. You were also charged for two loads of washing and not one load @R40 per load.

If you had taken the time to look at our web site and photo gallery properly, you would see that there is a house infront of us at a lower level and not at eye level because we are situated on higher grounds than our front neighbor. Your photo of the chairs and table showing the house infront has been taken from the lower level of the house and doesn't obstruct the view from the room you stayed in on the 3rd floor of the house. Why didn't you take the photo from your deck to show the real view you had? No, you chose to do your own trick photography we see. The photo was taken from the barbeque area below your room level and also at a very bad angle because you can see the floor and our lower level of the house. You also comment on rooms that you haven't seen or been in. That we feel is totally unfair and a bad judge of caricature. Our website does show the house clearly infront of us on our gallery page, We also live in a suburb where there is more than one house in a street and you have neighbors on either side. Our local town planning have strict building regulations and the house infront of us is at the required building hight and doesn't take away anyones view. I had glass block walls built to eliminate the neigbors house next door. This has nothing to do with your view or holiday and we find this really an invalid statement of yours and it just goes to show how desperatelty you are trying to fault our outstanding establishment. We have also just been regraded for 5 stars and i can proudly hold my head up high and say we were awarded 98% for our 5 star rating. The grading is done over two days.

Our guests comments on our web site speak volumes for themselves. It is rather disturbing to find out that you were so unhappy with everything but never brought this to my ettention.

We thank you for your comments and we will make sure our establishment carries it's name very high in our industry as it already is. We will take your points into concideration and where we find them relivant and valid we will do our best to rectify them.

I would like to take this oppurtunity to say thank you very much for your visit and i'm really sorry you didn't enjoy your time with us. I would also like to take this oppertunity to say good bye to you and your lovely wife, as we didn't get the oppurtunity to do so the day you snuck out and left without letting us know, and leaving without greeting us all.

Sorry you feel the way you do. If there is anything we could do to change your mind. Please feel free to contact me.

Regards, Wayne Alexander

5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed September 21, 2008

Stayed at Alexander House in August. What a stunning place! The place itself is so special, the staff are fantastic, the views are amazing - the whole experience is just sheer decadence and enjoyment. The house has been furnished with great care and individuality but still manages to be very comfortable. Although it is a bit of a drive back into Knysna at night, the Alexander offers a chauffeur service back into town. In fact, they are always very hospitable and accommodating - service always with a smile. Part of me wants to recommend the Alexander highly, while the other part of me wants to keep it as my secret!
