We had a really nice stay. The rooms and location are really great and the staff extremly friendly. Be aware that Knysna 'downtown' is around 4-5 km away. The nearest restaurant is Cornuti Knysna located around 1,2 km away. They serve good pizzas and you can walk there but the walk back is up-hill so quite an exercise!

We can definitely recommend this place.

Just back from a couple of nights at The Alexander. Overall, a fantastic place to stay. We were in the Pearl room and it was great. Sea views from the room and of the Heads from the deck. The room itself was big and luxuriously decorated, with a nice bathroom. Great value for the price.

The hotel has a fantastic lounge and outside seating area with a grand bar and stunning views. Wayne was charming and an excellent host. He was friendly and helpful - we really felt he wanted us to have a good time.

They also do a free chauffeur service to the local restaurants. We had a couple of good meals out and one recommendation which unfortunately was a duffer (Simola - a golfing resort).

Wayne also has a wonderful team supporting him. A special mention to Cedric and Memory.

A great place in Knysna and we could have happily stayed a few extra nights!

First the great things: We had the honeymoon suite for one night in December 2011 on our driving trip down the N2. Unbelievable views from our private deck, and from our room and from our bed--we could look out and see the Indian Ocean and the cliffs. Gorgeous. The room was lavishly decorated in an Asian motif. The king bed was just right. Cedric welcomed us at reception, helped us with dining recommendations and reservations, and drove us to and from the restaurant, and was generally charming and interesting, telling us quite a bit about the area and the hotel. Breakfast was delicious, and Memory, our server, was warm and funny. After we left, we realized that my husband left a pair of shoes in the room, and Cedric was so kind as to package them up and send them to us a our Cape Town hotel.
The problems we encountered were few but disappointing. After a fairly long drive from Addo, we arrived at The Alexander midafternoon. We'd skipped lunch en route, thinking that we'd get a snack upon arrival in Knysna. When we asked Cedric about the possibility of a snack--chips, nuts, whatever--he said that there was nothing available. Not even in our minibar! That seems highly odd to me, especially after reading other people's reports of cheese plates upon arrival and the like. Cedric offered to give us directions to a local restaurant, but as that would involve driving back down the hill, we decided to retreat to our beautiful room and relax. We didn't even get our welcome drink! But we did relax after our drive, and thoroughly enjoyed our view.
The other thing, just an oddness, really, was that Wayne never emerged from his apartment to greet us. We said hi to him once from our deck, but he and his dogs were otherwise not in evidence. Not sure why, and again, not a big deal, but....odd. We would have liked to have met him and asked about the many treasures decorating the house. Cedric told us that Wayne had collected many of them in his travels, and we were curious about the details. Ah, well. Four stars, not five, but I'm still happy we stayed at The Alexander.

Room Tip: Higher rooms have a phenomenal view!

Perfect location and total luxury - will definitely be back! Small words of advice to the owners would be to pre-cehyeck everything in the rooms before the guests check in. We had a few glitches with the DSTV, underfloor heating and had a cold shower one night. Everyone was very apologetic, and we know sometimes these things happen, but it would still be a good step to do the pre-check. Beyond that, gorgeous rooms, spectacular views, friendly staff and delicious breakfast every day.

Stayed at "The Alexander" for a night on our way from PE to Cape Town.

The location is perfect - unfortunately from our room we only saw the roof of another house. But from upstairs you've very good views towards the Ocean. Location couldn't be better.

The complete hotel, the lobby, the rooms are very cozy, exactly what you expect of a 5* boutique hotel.

To be perfect some small things are missing (beside the missing view from the room):
- No Espresso or Cappuccino served, just ordinary coffee
- The cooked breakfast wasn't that great, jam shouldn't be cheap PNP where still the price (R 29) is on the glass and some fresh fruits would also be a good option.

Alexanderhouse, Owner at The Alexander Boutique Suites, responded to this reviewResponded June 26, 2011

Thank you for your review, and i'm terribly sorry you felt this way and never brought it to my attention at the time...

What i can say to your review is that all our rooms and suites are priced according to the views and sizes of the rooms and suites. All our guests have the right to choose what suites there budget best. This is exactly what you did.

We do offer cappuccino and espresso at our breakfasts. All you needed to do was ask the lady serving you or myself.

Pick n Pay is one of our largest supermarket chains through-out South Africa, and purchasing products from them is irrelevant. Sorry we had left a price tag on one of our 8 jams. This could have been a human error. We all do make mistakes...

We purchase allot of our produce and foods from Local Farms, Supermarkets and Local Markets in and around Knysna every day, this is to ensure that you are receiving fresh food at all times. Most of our foods we purchase are organic as well as free range.

I want to thank you for bringing this to my attention over trip advisor and i'm also sorry that you didn't bring this to my attention when you were at the house.

WE stumbled upon the Alexander House by chance, from the moment we stepped into the house we were welcomed! Considering we hadn’t made a booking they were more than happy to accommodate us and made us feel like they had been waiting for us to arrive. The owner Wayne was great in running us through things and gave us the low down on what places and restaurants we should try out – his recommendations were fantastic and really made our trip very special! The Alexander itself is something out of the ordinary as it is filled with exquisite furnishing from all over the world, a designers dream as attention to details has been taken on every level, great fabrics, huge plush bedrooms and a gorgeous bathroom. Very modern and stylish yet cosy and comforting. The views from all the rooms in the house were breathtaking as it is situated high up on one of the heads of Knysna giving you some of the most beautiful sunsets! Breakfasts are a treat as there are many great things to choose from including a delicious freshly baked banana bread!
We would definitely recommend this to as many people that are planning to do the Garden Route as you wont be disappointed, its location is perfect, its exotic art and design is refreshing, the staff including the owner are hugely welcoming and very helpful! We will be returning to the Alexander House on our next trip to the Cape as it was one of our highlights of our break away!
