Great food, lovely host. We stayed two nights in Knysna and went two times to the Olive Tree. It was so good!

We've visited Knysna more than 10 times and had many great meals here. The Olive Tree has to be one of the best for food, value, ambience. The owner is delightful. Perfect.

It's not the fanciest restaurant and the food does not come out looking like a Xmas tree. The ethos seems to be, get the best ingredients and cook them really well, throw in good service and a sense of genuine care and you will be rewarded with a great night and fantastic food. Coming from the UK and used to eating in fine restaurants I can honesty say I don't know how they come to get so much eat on lamb chops and then cook them so the juices are flowing. Having ate at the many mediocre, not bad waterfront restaurants it was on our last night we ate here, and like others wish we had tried it earlier. Make sure you book.
Just one small niggle on my part and that is that portions are too big.

Visited three times during our weeks stay in Knysna.
Excellent service Ellen is very friendly and her son is the chef. The menu comes on a blackboard which she explains to every customer
The babotie rolls are beautiful.
The steak melts in your mouth must be one of the best. we have ever had.
Unable to fault any of the food, will definately be back when we return to Knysna.

As another reviewer said “don’t judge a book by the cover” I would add don’t judge this restaurant by the location and the decor, judge it by the food and the service both of which you will go a long way to fault.
We were warmly greeted at the door and shown to our table by our waiter. The menu came on a big school easel accompanied by the enthusiastic owner who explains each dish with great knowledge and enthusiasm. The Baboetie spring rolls were a hit as a starter, very tasty and enough to share... but you may not want too they are that good!! Sharing is not a problem to this restaurant and we were advised which dishes would be good to share.
We were four eating on Friday all the dishes, starters, mains and deserts arrived at the table looking great and tasting even better! We could not fault anything we ate, the portions were more than adequate, the flavours were fantastic and the food was cooked to perfection... especially my Fillet steak that was so soft to cut with just the right amount of pinkness. One in our party is vegetarian and the Vegetarian delight was probably the best meat free dish that I have seen served to her and by all accounts was tasty too.
The service complimented the food all evening even when you could see the pace being picked up by the small team as the tables filled, we were never left wanting. The Olive Tree truly deserves its number 1 ranking other restaurant owners should eat there they will learn a lot. We will be back next time we are in town.
