First, we wee a little unsure upon entering since it is associated with a resort; however, the service was excellent, the atmosphere sophisticated and quiet, the food was delicious, and the service excellent. A delightful evening all around and highly recommended for someone looking for an excellent, but more expensive, meal.

We were a table of 10 celebrating our friends' daughters birthday - this was a very enjoyable evening! The restaurant is luxuriously furnished which adds to the overall experience. We sat near the sliding doors, so before sun set, we had stunning views as well!

From the starters, to dessert - all the dishes were cooked and presented with much pride and perfection - Geoffrey a true master chef!

I would highly recommend the visit as we had wanted to try it out a few times on our previous visits to Knysna, but could not secure a booking. This time I booked 3 months in advance!

Look forward to our next visit!

Tough challenge - 4 foodies in South Africa for 2 weeks eating our way through the country. Who would have thought we'd find our best meal in a hotel? Not me for sure, but Zachary's delivered. Beautiful restaurant in a gorgeous setting. Well thought out wine list. Polished, refined service. But some of the dishes, oh wow. I ordered a vegetable ragout, wanting to depart from the normal fish fare I had been savoring. I still dream about this dish. The absolute freshest vegetables I have ever had in a meal, accompanied by a light but flavorful broth and dumplings that scored a 10 on my scale. Two of the other diners ordered scallops and raved how good they were. Salads presented were pleasing to the eye, bountiful, and delicious. This was the only place we passed on dessert because nothing really appealed to us, but our server delivered a bit of chocolate at the end of the meal that was perfect. And for someone who has been in the chocolate business for 34 years I should know. I read other reviews on Zachary's and it doesn't sound like the same restaurant. Maybe they had an off night. Maybe the diners weren't expecting such an expensive bill. Yes it is upscale and you could quibble the atmosphere is a bit stuffy, but I don't believe you can argue about the food. 5 stars from this reviewer for the most outstanding meal in my 2 weeks in South Africa.

It was with eager anticipation that we have looked forward to our dinner at Zachary's in the beautiful Pezula estate in Knysna. My lovely girlfriend and I have made it our mission to visit all the restaurants on the JP Rossouw list of Top 30 restaurants and some of the others on the list like Jordan and Mosaiec have produced extremely memorable experiences.

On arrival the friendly staff showed us in and the venue is small and intimate. The atmosphere was somewhat too serious for my liking, and I would have preferred a slightly more relaxed feeling, but after looking at the exciting menu with wine pairing option, this was soon forgotten.

Our food was well prepared and thought through and can't really be faulted. It should however be noted that compared to the culinary genius of chefs like Chantalle van Wyk (Mosaic), George Jardine (Jordan), and Lizelle Stolze (Serendipity), the food was good, but by no means outstanding. I also found the dinner experience very impersonal with neither the chef nor one of the managers ever offering to explain the menu or any of our dishes - this might be a personal preference, but I do appreciate it when when the chef takes 5 minutes to personally come and explain what we can expect. The chef did surprise my girlfriend who phoned ahead to alert him that she is allergic to gluten and dairy, with an amazing warm gluten free bread which was a real treat, but somewhat disappointed with some of the other dishes by just substituting with fruit, which resulted in her just having some extremely expensive fruit salads.

We and our friends that accompanied us, all selected the wine pairing option, and although the wines are well selected and paired beautifully with our food, were disappointed with the fact that we had to ask for the wine to be served after our food arrived, we were limited to 1 glass per meal and was reprimanded for requesting a second glass (which given the price of R300 per pairing was disappointing), wine selection did not include anything out of the ordinary and was slightly bland in its selection (although all were good quality SA wines).

In addition to criticisms above, our waiter left our table unattended for long periods and we seemed to call her every time we needed something, which is not expected in a restaurant of this pedigree. The waiters also started a removing all the table cloths of all the tables (by placing them on the floor), while we were still enjoying our desert and coffee, somewhat giving the impression that it was time to leave as it got closer to 11pm.

In conclusion the overall experience somewhat spoiled the dinner given the poor service and incredibly over priced menu. The 5 course dinner with wine pairing, bottle of still water and coffees, ended up being the most expensive ever (over R1000 per person excluding tip) and was ~50% more expensive than comparable dinner at Mosaic recently and closer to 100%% more than Serendipity and more than 3 times more than 3 course lunch with wine and coffee at Jordan. Thus given the exorbitant cost, this venue is hard to recommend to any other foodies out there, given all the other great restaurants available at much more reasonable prices.

Dear Raymond Waldeck,

We are disappointed in the review we received from you. We are featured in the categories we are because we consistantly perform and deserve to be recognized in those categories.

In regards to your experience we do concede that there has been service failures and that those have been included in debriefings and training sessions. We attempt to anticipate guest needs and give them the space they need to enjoy the evening.

For the benefit of other readers, the wine serving for the wine pairing is not bottomless. The Sommelier attempted to explain that to you - We are sorry that you felt that was a reprimand.

We served your dessert outside on the terrace as a gesture to accommodate your desire to smoke and unfortunately the waiters started to clear the restaurant linen inside the restaurant.

Thank you for giving us the feedback and we assure you of our best intention at all times.

Best Regards

Gert

This is an excellent fine dining restuarant with brilliant service and beautiful interior in a wonderful setting and the bar is wonderful for a sundowner before dinner. We had the tasting menu and it was excellent, just did not enjoy the dessert that much, but for the rest, it was a super, worthwhile experience!

Dear Quiet_Guest 312583,

Thank you for rating us and highlighting the fantastic experience Zachary's offer. We believe Noah's is the best address in Knysna to sit back and enjoy a sundowner and admire the majestic Outeniqua mountains in the distance.

Please let me have your direct comments about the dessert if you don't mind.

The Zachary's team is honored by your review as Best Restaurant in the Garden Route.

Best Regards

Gert
