We tipped into the Gecko Bar side of the restaurant at 11:00 for a coffee, having had a whale watching trip cancel on us due to bad weather. The coffee was good (proper machine) and then we noticed the bar menu and that it was now just before noon, so while we were there..... Chowder, sushi & the MOST DELICIOUS oysters washed down with the house chardonnay later, we left wishing that we had had the opportuinty to really dig in. Fabulous food. Best we had in Hermanus. Should have gone back in the evening. A great lunch for two and only Z250! Go there if you can.

It was clear that the bar could become quite a scene in the evening.

October is a windy month in the Western cape, and finding a good spot to have a meal can be quite tiresome, we were rewarded with a fabulous view overlooking the harbour in Hermanus at The Rock, and not a breath of wind either! The view of the bay was gorgeous, we watched the whale boats coming and going taking tourists out the see the remaining whales and calves in Walker Bay.

We haven't dined at the Rock for a number of months (for no apparent reason) and we were pleasantly surprised to see renovations and extentions had been done, the dining out on the balcony is going to be a hit during the summer holidays and I'm sure we'll have to make bookings well in advance. A new addition is the Sushi bar, the blackboard menu and the menu has been changed (for the better). Our selections came from the blackboard, we shared delicious Chicken Sate's and a fresh salad for starters followed by an excellent crispy duck and noodle dish. Our waiter was very attentive, made excellent recommendations and pauses between courses were spot on. The wine list is comprehensive from Moet to local plonk. All in all an excellent meal with a view. We'll definitely be back.

It took a waittress 15 minutes to take our order. Then an hour to serve our pathetic meal. Not at all worth the money we paid for the drop of uninteresting food on our plates. We will never visit this unfriendly place again. Extemely unprofessional, don't-care service. No directions to get to the place and difficult to find at night.

During our 2 nights stay at Hermanus mid. October, we visited this restaurant twice.
The first evening we took crayfishes which were well prepared (only place where we got better crayfishes in SA was In Paternoster), i was just wondering the quite big price difference the 300gr and 500gr crayfish (130ZAR vs 280ZAR...). For the starters I can only recommend the salmon tartar with advocados which was delicious.
The second evening we chose meat dishes, the lamb shanks were very tasty. During both evenings the service was OK and gave us excellent advices for the wine choice (try the Creation wines). Not cheap but still a good place to discover.
