Stayed 3 nights (1st, 2nd & 3rd Nov) as our last stop en-route to CT. After our experience of Periwinkle Guest Lodge in Plett, we were really rather looking forward to this place, especially as we'd also heard whales were around - took 3 minutes from being in our Room (No 1 - their Honeymoon suite - no it wasn't) to see our first. This place is stunning - perfectly located on a rocky promontory overlooking Walker Bay, with a bush (many of which in flower)strewn headland directly in front of their own walled garden (gated-access). We spent some hours just watching the whales, seals, penguins mucking about in the waves - we also did the Whale Boat trip, but would say - only do that, if you are majorly keen and it is very calm. South Atlantic waves can cut up rough in minutes. Weather was gorgeous, but breezy, so we saw a lot from shore. Breakfast (on deck in the morning sun) and service was exemplary - Dinner is n/a, so we went into Town, where a myriad of options exist - cabs booked by Staff. Drove here from Wilderness through the Little Karoo, down R.62, R.324, Swellendam, then N2 to Hermanus. Stunning scenery and vistas (flowers) etc, but allow loads of time, then it's at its best. Drive to CT down R,44 was excellent too and Penguins at Betty's Bay are better than at Simon's Town. We did encounter a gentleman with a penchant for sitting exposed whilst out on the rocks infront of female Whale Watchers !

Room Tip: Book early and pay the extra and get a sea-view, superior with balcony. IF you can get one, and your...

We stayed for a night in September as part of a trip along the Garden route and were not disappointed the staff where friendly and the accomodation and breakfast where first rate. The location is amazing and we were lucky enough to spot plent of whales. I would highly recommend the Abalone and would stay there again if we go back to SA as it was with out doubt one of the best places we stayed during our holiday.

Room Tip: If you can go for a sea view room

Outstanding Guest House, the best Ive ever stayed in. Whales can literally be seen from the back windows. Wonderful rooms and fantastic service. Its a 45 minute walk into town along the cliff path, we were watching whales the whole way! The staff will arrange a taxi to take you into town at night and the same driver will pick you up. The best thing about the Abalone is the genuinity of the service. Its excelent but it's in the background nothing false about it. We hope to return to Hermanus and when we do it will certainly be here.

We stayed at the Abalone in September for two nights on our way along the wine and garden routes. We were fortunate to pick many nice places to stay, but the Abalone stands out in our memory as one of the best and a great place to stay in Hermanus. A bit away from the centre (you need a car) the lodge is an excellent position overseeing the cliff top walk and the ocean, and yes we did see whales from our bedroom. Beautifully furnished and the staff could not have been nicer. Well worth a visit.

Room Tip: The more expensive 1st floor ocean view are worth it

The Abolone Guest House is very pretty and very stylish. Its position is perfect for watching whales from the large deck outside. The lounge area is comfortable and ideal for a glass of wine looking out to sea. Our room was lovely - it was a pity we were only there for one night!Tthe staff were very friendly and very helpful. they even persuaded a local whaling boat trip to take us on board at short notice even thought they were fully booked as we hadn't seen any whales at that time. The breakfast was good again eaten looking out to sea. Couldn't have chosen a better place to stay.

We had just done 5 days on safari and looked forward to whale watching in Hermanus. The brochure shows people watching from the cliff top. We can do better than that. We could sit up in bed and see whales. The weather was not so good when we arrived, so the whales were further inland than normal. What a treat ! The next day, with better weather, we took a trip in a charter boat for a closer view. Southern Right Charters are one of many companies available. The boat was modern, comfortable, and safe. The crew, including the excellent guide, Ken, were very capable and made it possible for a closer more interesting encounter with whales including the inevitable baby.

We arrived in time for the annual whale festival weekend, so the town was full of families and additional features. The music and carnival atmosphere just added to our enjoyment. We also found a taxi driver more than capable of ferrying us to the various restaurants and venues we chose, and when our choice failed, he found alternatives.

We had already chosen Abalone Guest Lodge, and several of the people we met on the earlier safari had tried to book here but were unsuccessful. They had heard that this was one of the best places to stay in Hermanus, and they were not misinformed. In addition to the whale watching from the bed, the facilities at this lodge put other larger hotels in the shade. Listed as a B&B, there was a swimming pool, balconies overlooking the sea, extensive garden and patio deck, and a direct path to the cliff top.

The rooms were bright, modern and extremely comfortable, with a seaside theme in keeping with the name of the lodge. Breakfast was at two large tables with the other guests, although there were smaller tables available for the honeymooners.
Breakfast is basically anything you want. There is a menu, but the ladies in the kitchen can accommodate most requirements. The preparation and presentation is very professional. There is the usual buffet style continental option. The adjoining lounge is available to guests to use during the evening with complimentary wine, and popping in and out during the day was just like a hotel.

The staff were extremely helpful and keen to meet all our requirements. They found us that very useful taxi driver and booked restaurants for us. They gave us the best advice for our three day stay.

Hermanus has a very English feel about it and Abalone Guest Lodge will particularly please all its English visitors. We have no hesitation in recommending this establishment for whale watching, or just a seaside holiday.

Room Tip: Obviously seaview rooms are the best, but limited. Make sure you stipulate this if you want to watch...

What a wonderful place. Enjoy a delicious breakfast on the terrace, while watching the whales. Go for a walk to Hermanus using the cliff path, terrific views and sounds of the sea. It is a 45mn walk, very nice along the coast. Hermanus is a very pleasant town.
Parking place is safe. The room is very confortable, the bathroom was amazing.
The staff is very friendly and helpful, they can help you organise your stay and decide what is the best activity for the day.
I only spent one night there, but you can easily stay 2 nights, much to do around.
