“Mediocre, at best”

After reading everyone else's reviews, I can't believe that we stayed in the same place. Hermanus is a wonderful place with lots to do, including watching Southern Right whales from the coastal path. There are numerous hotels and guest houses and lots of restaurants to choose from. We stayed at The Potting Shed for two nights on a three week trip touring the west coast and the Western Cape of South Africa. Of the 10 different places that we stayed in, this was by far the worst. Our room was one of three in the main building. The room was tastefully decorated, although there was not much space to move around. The bed was composed of two seperate divans and the mattress sagged terribly in the middle of each divan. We both had backache after the first night. The bathroom was tiny and took a little bit of negotiating to get in and out of when you wanted to close the doors. The guests information book was full of rules, the wording of which made you wonder if there had been a problem with previous guests. Breakfast was a mediocre affair, where you had to nominate the night before whether you wanted cooked or continental breakfast. This place is okay but for the price (R550) there must be better places to stay in Hermanus.

My two adult children and myself recently had the good fortune to stay with Dave and Annamarie at The Potting Shed "annex" or self catering cottage. It was a wonderful place to stay in Hermanus. The self catering cottage is located about 5-8 minutes away from the original Potting Shed B and B in a heavily secured condo/townhouse compound just past the abalone farm in town called Whale Rock Estates. It was just a couple blocks from the harbor with the whale trips, a restaurant, etc. We stayed at number 23 (I believe they now own 2 cottages) and it was located on the first floor with covered parking adjacent to the unit.

The unit was darling-decorated in an ocean decor and extremely clean, new and functional. It had two bedrooms, one full bathroom, kitchen, livingroom and a sliding door out to an outside all season room. One bedroom was a queen bed and the other was a double twin bedded room. The beds were very comfy and the comforters were delightful on a cold winter's night .

Some of the things included in the unit-The TV had great cable stations for my son(read sports stations);iron and ironing board;washer but no dryer;full equipped kitchen with microwave, electric kettle, coffeemaker, etc.

The unit was very quiet and I sensed that this compound is perhaps a getaway place or second home for people on the weekends?

I would highly recommend anyone going to Hermanus to look into staying with Dave and Annamarie. They are delightful people and make you feel as though you have been their friends for years. Both of them are helpful in regards to Hermanus and things to do along with calling for reservations, etc. My children(ages 24 and 27) thought that it was a great value and a terrific place to stay too!
Other tips for Hermanus-
We used Southern Right for the whale trip and would highly recommend it.We actually had one whale stay with our boat for over an hour and yes,we had to buy the DVD for $15 USD too!
DON'T do the abalone tour near the condo-its about $5 USD and a total ripoff. You don't tour-just get escorted to a covered shed area and a 25 minute talk.
Both kids went golfing at the Hermanus golf course and loved it. It is a beautiful course!
Beachcombing a must!
Restaurants-Cabana and Fusion were our favorites! Also the cave restaurant for breakfast.

I enjoyed my 6-night stay very much. The staff was very friendly & helpful. The breakfast was excellent. The room was comfortable, tastefully decorated & furnished. Hermanus was very lively, even in Winter. There were many good restaurants & shops. Hermanus is within easy driving distance of the Harold Porter National Botanical Garden, the Stony Point Penguin Colony & Kogelberg Nature Reserve. Fernkloof Nature Reserve, in Hermanus, was among the most beautiful places I saw in South Africa. I definitely recommend this as a place to stay.

My friend and I stayed with Dave and Annamarie for 5 nights in January. The room was very spacious and clean. Breakfast was great. They suggested things to do and places to eat and made dinner reservations. Dave gave us a great tip (borrow a walking stick!) before we headed out on one of the hiking trails in Fernkloof Reserve. We highly recommend the Potting Shed.

A month ago we once again booked our October break at the Potting Shed. We stop with Annamarie & David 2/3 times a year and have been with them the last 3 years. My wife and myself are somewhat elderly and stop at the Potting Shed. My son and his wife and my grandson and his wife, somewhat younger, stay in their excellent self-catering spot on the rocks, 5 min's away but join us for an excellent choice of breakfasts and we all rub shoulders with visitors from all over the world.
Everything about them including easy parking and a pool , is excellent but I must give you one warning, adverse , but you must take notice of it. YOU MUST book now because if you leave it then there is one certainty and that is, you will be told in the most friendly way-sorry, we are full up. If that means that you have to stay elsewhere, then and in any event, pop into the Potting Shed and Annamarie will show you the reviews in the visitors books and without doubt you will read several from your country and as like as not from where you live. Hermanus of course is renowned for its Whale season and that is one reason why we are going in October and we will be there on the 24th, my wifes birthday and hope to meet you then. Other than the Whale season, Hermanus will welcome you with fabulous weather and shops. Where do you dine in the evening ?, leave it to David, he knows all the best places and will book for you.
My name is Roy and my wife is Connie and we well know that as you read through the web-sites that you will have a problem. All are written in the reviews as excellent and this gives you a problem, who do you choose. This review is personal and is based on our experience and Annamarie and David know full well that they can expect us to stay with them over the future years and they know that when we do not book with them it will be because we will be up amongst the stars and looking down at, for us and we hope you, the brightest star in Hermanus. Briefly and aptly, you book and you will have a whale of a time.
Greetings from Connie and Roy in Milnerton

This friendly b&b is located in a good location close to the whale watching areas and main town. The rooms are spacious and there is private parking available. Breakfasts are very good and are arranged for a time to suit. The hosts offer really good recommendations and can certainly help with arranging bookings for activities and restuarants -we got a great table in the best restuarant in Hermanus. This is very good value accomodation if you want to avoid paying higher rates for b&b's with views of the ocean / whales.

We stayed at the Potting Shed Guest House in Hermanus for, of course, whale watching. The hosts have been very helpful, offering a lot of ideas of what to do and where to spot the whales. The guest house has five rooms, nicely decorated, and clean. The house is a little away from the main drag in a quiet street but still within walking distance to the seeshore.
