“Very, very disappointing”
Reviewed October 3, 2012

We stayed 2 nights and really regretted to have booked ahead of time!
The room was small, just a small window, with view on... the garden wall, less than a meter away from the window - needless to say we had no light.
The bathroom was terrible: you nearly burn yourself when turning off the hot water, bath tub is no that clean, 2 people can't fit at the same time in the bathroom, it gets so humid that drops of water drop from the roof of the bathroom.
Bed mattress was old, we had back pain for 2 days.
No internet connection from the rooms, you have to go to the common breakfast room (which is also very dark). Heating not functioning very well.
It's not worth more than the price you pay (off season).
The only positive point: breakfast is ok, and the owner is a very nice lady.

I'm sorry you did not enjoy your stay or inform us at the time, that you were unhappy with the room. Unfortunately we do not have views at our guest house – although, there are sea views from our self catering apartments.

Our bathrooms are not designed for 2 people but are big enough for one person to use at a time with shower, sink and toilet. We do not have any bath tubs in any of our guest rooms so am a little confused how you found the “bath tub” to not be clean.

The Potting Shed was very run down when we bought it 8 years ago and we are constantly striving to make improvements. We have just (September 2012) renovated the front of the building, pool area and courtyard/car park. However, a view from the room we cannot create or make the bathrooms larger due to municipal regulations. We have made improvements each and every year but can only work with the space and existing building we have.

All rooms have wall heaters that are in working order. These take the chill off the room but not as good as a fire place. Extra blankets are supplied.

It is not a requirement for a 3 star accommodation to have Internet connection - but in March this year we installed a computer and free Wi Fi/Internet point in the lounge & dining room for guests convenience.

Many guests comment on how nice the beds are – but it’s difficult to please everyone as some like a hard bed and others like soft. All linen was replaced new in 2012 and is 100% percale cotton.

We do not increase our rates in high season – we have an all year rate of R700 a night for a double room for 2 people sharing with full breakfast included. Many people think this is excellent value for what we offer.

We pride ourselves in the hospitality & personal service we offer, with personal touches to the rooms to make the place unique i.e. hand painted floors and lavender on the beds. However for guests who are looking for luxury, upmarket accommodation with views and internet connection in the bedroom they should consider a 4 or 5 star establishment.

My sister and I needed a girly getaway after weeks of stress at work. We roped in our two good girl friends and planned an impromptu weekend of food, laughter and face masks. As this was all rather last-minute we enlisted the help of the lovely Annemarie and her husband Dave... They were able to accommodate us within minutes. The guesthouse itself was super neat and tiny and uber relaxing. The decor was charming, quaint and homely. Breakfast was heavenly... The only thing missing from the experience for two girlie girls was a hair dryer-we'll pack your own next
time. No doubt we will be returning to The Potting shed again soon... to escape from the crazy city life!

Thank you for your nice comment - so glad you had a relaxing break at The Potting Shed, and hope to see you again soon.
We don't keep hair-dryers in the room but we do have several for guest use - available on request.

I was travelling with a friend from Mossel Bay to Cape Town and we stopped into Hermanus for one night on the way through in May 2012.
We hadn't booked in anywhere... we called into the potting shed by chance, inspected a room and stayed the night.
It was a good choice. Friendly manager, clean good sized room, wifi in the shared lounge.
Nothing outstanding, but nothing that was disappointing.
Good value for money.

We deiced to take a weekend break for our 5 year anniversary. We were greeted by Annemarie upon arrival and she then surprised us by upgrading our room to the pool room so that we could celebrate in style. Really amazing that she did that for us. Just started our break on the right track.

Everything about The Potting Shed is homely, comfortable and friendly.Dave was always on hand to help us out when we needed it. Our first visit, but definitely not our last.

Breakfast was always a treat. Cooked to perfection and served to us like we were Kings and Queens. Easy to find the place as well. Always helps when you've been driving a while. Ten out of Ten for Annemarie and Dave and their beautiful Potting Shed.

Room Tip: Choose the room by the pool. Very private and lots of space.

In February 2012 we did a two week trip to south africa, starting at Cape town, and then driving east by car, with a stop at the winelands. The first weeks stops we had planned in advance, but for the 2nd week we had no exact plan. So come that we were looking for a nice accommodation at some place at the coast on the internet, and that’s how we found “The potting shed” in Hermanus. The original plan was to stay there for two nights and then drive further east. In the end we had a five day stay there because we loved being there and had a wonderful time at Annamarie and Davids place.

Annamarie and David gave us a very very warm welcome on arrival. They provided us with loads of information what to do in Hermanus. There are so many options in and around Hermanus, and Annamarie did a phone call and arranged everything for us immediately after we made the decision what to do - Annamarie and David are very helpful. Both of them had a lot “insider recommendations” what to do, so we sorted out very quickly what we definitely wanted to do.

Rooms are proper in size, nicely decorated, very clean, and there is a pool. WiFi Hot-Spot in the dining area, where a very delicious breakfast is served. You can choose between a cooked breakfast with ham and eggs, or homemade pancakes. If you wish to there is fruit salad, yoghurt and bread.
We can absolutely recommend the pancakes, which are served with a delicious house made lemon curd. There is a list of restaurant recommendations from Annamarie and David, some of which we visited and liked them a lot (especially the cocktail bar “Geckos” at the New Harbour).

City center, restaurants, the sea, everything is in walking distance from their place.

Our highlight was a sea kayak trip that Annamarie had been organising for us. In winter Hermanus is very famous for best landbased whale whatching, while in summer it is very unlikely to see a whale at all. When we came to the meeting point at the old harbour, we saw a group of about 400 dolphins, probably thanks to a sardine shoal in the bay, and 4 Brydes whales, which are very rare and very unlikely to be seen. Our guide was very excited as well. This kayak tour was just amazing. We got a lot of information about sealife in this region, and we got to see the “big five of the sea”: whale, dolphin, penguin, shark and seal. Absolutely great!

The oher things we did:
- Horseback riding at the Paradis ranch (as well orgnizes by Annamarie)
- A speedboat trip to Abbey road with shark-watching, visiting a seal colony etc.
Some good dining, a day at the beach doing just nothing.

Annamarie and David were excellent hosts, never invasive, but always there if we had questions (we had a lot!), and organizing everything for us in within a second. They have a lot of helpful connections in Hermanus, so they will always know someone/something to do/someplace to go.
In the end, we extended our stay, because we had such a good time there!

We would always come back und can highly recommend this B&B!
