“Magical second visit to Les Baleines”
Reviewed October 30, 2009

We have just returned from our second visit to Les Baleines and it was just as special as the first time. Our lovely hostess, Teresa, came to greet us on our first morning at breakfast and welcomed us back. We think it is great that they take the trouble to book restaurants and day trips, as Hermanus does get very busy during the whale season and it just guarantees you'll not be disappointed. You can always ask them to cancel. We saw whales from our room and balcony which was amazing. The breakfasts were delicious and plentiful. We would much rather stay somewhere small and personal than a big hotel and Teresa makes every effort to meet her guests and say goodbye on leaving. We will be recommending her to anyone who is thinking of staying in that area. Keep up the good work Teresa!

We arrived and it took a long time for someone to Answer the door. Eventually Oscar let us in a charming young man. Once we had filled all the paperwork in Oscar told us that we were actually booked in the Whales Tale next door but once we were directed to the Property and parked our car Oscar sorted the Luggage and showed us round the B&B. We were not disappointed our room was superb the bathroom was sheer Luxury though when I put the shower on the knob came of in my hand and was difficult to put back on. Our room was right by the dining area which seemed a bit strange. Breakfast was served here every morning so it was difficult to have a lie in as we heard other guests eating and talking so felt a bit vulnerable them just being the other side of our room. The pool looked okay but we did not use it as it was not warm enough. There was a lovely veranda with tables and chairs overlooking the sea where you could have drinks and we made use of the Binoculars to do some Whale Watching which was fun and we saw lots of Whales. There was a Bar lounge with pool table downstairs which we used in the evenings and it was fully stocked with wine beer and spirits which you helped yourself to and wrote what you had on a note book and used it as an honesty bar. We did not see any staff in the evenings so I think we were totally on our own as we had numbers to ring in an emergency. Breakfast was nice but not much choice other than how you wanted your eggs and i wasn't keen on yogart and muffins for breakfast. Oscar had pre booked some Restaurants and a Whale watching tour which we were not obliged to do. I was pleased we had taken a trip in to Hermanus and looked at the Restaurants before hand as one of them was up some very steep stairs which was not suitable for my friend who has mobility problems so I did cancel it. We thought the whale watching trip was a bit expensive too so canceled that but it was not a problem to do so. We met the owner on our last day she was over powering and spent ages telling us what we should do on our way to our next stop and suggested we drop off at oudsthooorn in the mountains and visit the caves well if we had we would not have reached wildiness before dark and that part of the N2 is challenging we hit mist and fog on a very bendy mountain road so breathed a sigh of relief when we arrived safely. It took us two hours longer to get their than we were told it would. On the whole we liked Baleines but it was a little to far out from Hermanus so I needed to use the car in the evenings and could not drink. There was a lovely Beach not far from the B&B called Grotto Beach it had a cafe where we had coffee and was so peaceful .

Not the easiest hotel to find as it is in a residential area but quite exquisite when you get there. Beautifully decorated and is like staying in someone's house rather than a hotel. Set some way back from the coastal strip so you will not see whales from here but it is no trouble to drive into town and view them from the coastal path. They do prebook a restaurant which you can decline but we didn't. Next time we will as, whilst the restaurant was fine and we got a very good table, it was on the expensive side for South Africa and there are others in town that look equally as good. Breakfast was good. Very suitable for those wanting a quiet hotel where they can relax.

We stayed in some truly wonderful places during our stay in S A and Les Baleines suffered by comparison.
It is a lovely house with an interesting and stylish interior, very comfortable and clean rooms with stunning ocean views and underfloor heating in the bathroom.
Although very warmly welcomed by Oscar, we later found the owner's manner rather overbearing. Presumably in an effort to help?,evening meals are pre-booked for you in town restaurants. This means they have to be unbooked if you dont want them. The feeling was one of "being organised" which doesn't suit our personal holiday style.
Brekfasts were small and fussy with no choice offered except how your eggs were cooked.
Unlike the 5 other places we stayed there was no sign or "farewell" from the owner as we left.
We now wish we had stayed elsewhere...nearer Hermanus.

We stayed here on our honeymoon in September. As per the previous reviewer we too were due to stay at the Whales Tale and received an "upgrade". The guesthouse is beautifully decorated and has a real homely feel to it. The room was lovely with one of the most amazing bathrooms I have ever seen, under-floor heating, stunning bath and amazing shower. As has been said the owner had booked us into a restaurant in town as well as on a whale watching tour the following morning. Initially we were delighted as we had arrived fairly late and were relieved we didn't have to try and find something ourselves. On reflection however the whale watching tour was very expensive and had we not been so tired and had been paying more attention we probably would have questioned it.
One of the main down sides of this guesthouse is the location but this is mainly down to the fact there are no taxis into Hermanus so you have to rely on a shuttle bus service where the driver will not do a pick-up after 10.30pm, which can seem a little early when you are on holiday.
But they have a well stocked mini-bar and a full-size snooker to take advantage if you want to continue the night when you get back

We were due to stay at the Whales Tale, amazingly as we were looking for it the landlady had stopped our car and asked if I was Iain, I said yes and she took us to this accomodation as work was being done at the Whales Tale. This is one of those boutique type places and it was absolute quality we loved it but only had one night. Dinner is booked for you but you do not have to take up this option. Our room and bathroom in particular were great. The guest room overlooks the ocean. It is a bit out of town. We had a drive into town in the hope of seeing early whales and we did! Spectacular really made the stay. We got a taxi into town at night arranged by the hotel, Francois the driver was brilliant giving us lots of information and we even then saw two calves in the bay when he dropped us off. Walking around the town was no problem at all. We spent the night in the Zebra bar and Bojangles, followed by dinner at Cubana with a great view of the bay and the full moon. There is a self service bar in the hotel which you would never see in the UK I am afraid. Loved it great experience all round.

We were upgraded from The Whale's Tale' to 'Les Baleines' which was a treat! I think they'd actually upgraded everyone though due to it being low season in Hermanus. It was a very nice establishment, different from the others on our trip and a worthy place to stay if in Hermanus. It is set rather oddly in a kind of suburban housing estate and is difficult to find without a sat nav. Once arrived though, it is a short walk to the beach.
The hotel staff book you meals at local recommended restaurants for your evening meal which you are welcome to change, but they were nice both evenings we stayed. A taxi was organised for us making arrangements stress free.
The staff also sorted out our swimming with great white sharks experience which was fab!
Also noteworthy was the lovely breakfast and pretty decor-it looked like a very nicely decorated home more than anything else.
The downside-when visiting hermanus outside of whale season there is little to really do-our 2 nights was really more than enough.
