“Fantastic !!!!”
Reviewed December 1, 2012

This has to be one of the best places we have stayed in SA. The property is just stunning, great views; you can watch the whales from the second you wake up, what a fantastic start to the day. The decor has been creatively designed, its warm luxurious and very welcoming with lots of interesting objects, books which must have been collected over a number of years which all adds to the luxurious experience.

We stayed in the amazing Whale suite! It’s on the ground floor and huge. So beautifully decorated in calm whites, blues and natural colours. The bed was so comfortable it was hard to get up walk across the room past the large comfy white sofa and coffee table under yet another window to the French windows covered by rolling white shutters to embrace the day and walk straight onto the pool terrace to greet the whales playing in the sea. It has uninterrupted sea views.

If you can drag yourself away from the view and the whales to prepare for your day you will need to try hard to resist spending hours in the freestanding roll bath so instead I would suggest a quick hot shower in the wet room!

Breakfast is exceptional and served in the main area with yes more views, sofa sitting area, full size pool table and bar. If you forget your reading material don’t worry there is a library on the first level opening out onto another sea view terrace.

The staff are wonderful and will do anything for you; the owner/manager is full of local knowledge and a great source to plan your time there. She booked us into a fantastic restaurant on our first night, so when we arrived tired from the drive it was so appreciated as we didn’t know where to go.

If you are going to Hermanus, you have to stay here!

The staff are all excellent and friendly. The room is comfortable and clean. We got good recommendations from the staff on local eateries. They whale watching boat trip was arranged for us which was a nice touch

A lovely guesthouse..really comfortable room and gorgeous bathroom! The views from the guest lounges are amazing and we managed to spot a couple of whales with the help of the available binoculars!Situated in a quite residential road but not far from an amazing sweep of beach which is where the cliff walk all the way into Hermanus centre can be accessed. Found it slightly odd that we had a restaurant booked for our two night stay there but The Burgundy is well worth the visit!Overall a lovely stay.

Les Baleines has lovely decor. Unfortunately the bed, although lovely and large, was a bit lumpy in the middle. We had a suite which was quite spacious.
On arrival we were a bit overwhelmed by the hostess announcing that she had booked restaurant seats for the 2 nights that we were staying there, but found that the Burgundy restaurant had good food. We did find that the prices were more than those on the menu available at the guest house. The Italian restaurant was a disappointment. Service was fairly slow. My fish was dry and we would rather have given that a miss.
The breakfast was unremarkable, but on the whole we enjoyed our stay there.

My husband and I stayed in this lovely guest house for a weekend in October. We were upgraded to the suite for free as it was the only room available, and we really appreciated the owner's effort to accommodate us. The room was beautifully appointed. We were booked into two fantastic restaurants and enjoyed the whale watching cruise.

Unfortunately the suite was directly off the lounge / breakfast room, so we were kept up quite late by the other guests playing pool and woken quite early the next morning by the noise. I would recommend avoiding the Blue Whale suite if you can, even though it's a lovely room. The morning we left, one of the staff members was extremely rude to another couple and didn't want to set a table for them for breakfast - all of the other tables remained dirty and were still not cleared away when we checked out later. I thought it was very unreasonable for the staff member not to want to set a table for their breakfast, and she handled it very badly, causing great embarrassment for us and the other couple - it ended the weekend on quite a sour note.

Les Baleines Hotel is an absolute gem.Located in a quiet residential area but still within walking distance of the fabled Cliff walkway. In whale season the viewing here is almost better than taking a boat trip.Hermanus centre is a 10 minute cheap taxi ride from the hotel, return fare typically around £10.
The hotel itself is beautifully furnished, the management, owner and staff are excellent Were we to return to Hermanus where to stay would not be a problem. This hotel was number two on our tour, but number 1 in quality.
No obligation bookings had been made for us to go whale watching and for 2 restaurants which in season would have been a godsend. This was an example of the service provided by Theresa the owner and manager of this super hotel.Visit here, you will not be disappointed.

Thank you so much to Teresa and her staff for a wonderful stay at Les Baleines, the rooms views, food etc were fantastic. Teresa kindly booked a whale watching tour and a resturant for us, both of which were wonderful. Also my husband mislaid his wallet and Teresa kindly called us to say another guest had handed it in and she would return it by secure post, which was very kind of them. If you want great accommodation, lovely breakfast, fantastic views then look no further. We would love to return.
