With a room on the second floor we felt seculed and yet still with in reach of the hermanus waterfront. It take a beautifull walk along the hermanus cliffs to get to the main town. From our room belcony doors we could see whales and dolfins in the bay and were made to feel welcome but respected. I really recomend Auberge Provence above all others in the reagion in terms of position, price and service.

probably the best location in hermanus, amazing views and comfort in the rooms. and the best breakfast one could expect. Everything is truly 5 star. Includingthe lovely Belind, the host. We can't wait to go back!

My wife and I have travelled for 3 to 4 weeks over the last 16 years in South Africa staying in a variety of accommodation ranging from expensive hotels to b and b`s.
We booked into their only twin bedded room. The entire sum for six nights was immediately debited, as they were entitled to do, but this rarely happens. We were not happy with this Auberge and after breakfast spoke to the manager saying we wished to move on without causing a fuss but that if she could see her way to making some refund we would be grateful. She said she had no authority to do this and insisted that we detail all our problems so she could communicate them to the owner- Mrs Steyn ,living in Capetown-the main ones being:-
There was no promised view of the sea, unless you stood up. The fynbos being too high.
Security against trespass was inadequate. The groundfloor room`s French windows opening on to a 12ft wide terrace available for all the guests to use and being the only access to the unlocked gate to the public cliff footpath.
The “private garden/courtyard with plunge pool” had a concrete base and was about 30 ft long x 15 wide- on the narrow aspect, on one side was the 30 ft high wall of the auberge and on the other a similarly high wall of the next door property. The two ends were about 8ft high. It smelt of drains and obviously received little sun
The shower water was lukewarm, the hairdryer worked intermittently, the lighting was too poor to make up by and there was no long mirror, blankets(2 duvets), laundry list or writing paper.
This is not our idea of 5 stars. We found the manager willfully misunderstanding, the mandatory staff of 4 conspicuous by their absence and therefore not welcoming

The Guest House is a unique accommodation, and we enjoyed our stay tremendously. The Manager, Belinda, made us feel welcome and pampered from the moment we arrived. The rooms are beautiful; we stayed in the Lavender Suite - with spectacular views of the crashing waves and bay. We found the guest house elegant, welcoming and a restful. The breakfasts are not to be missed, not only is the food delicious and abundant, but the presentation is spectacular, 5 star restaurant quality. Belinda was patient and helpful with our many questions about the area, providing perfect recommendations on site seeing, directions, and restaurant reservations. Without a doubt, our visit to Auberge Provence was one of the highlights of our trip to the Western Cape.

We stayed for one night in January during our two day wine tour to Elgin & Walker Bay including the sublime Hemel & Aarde valley. Belinda made us very welcome as we were the only guests in residence that night. The room overlooking the bay was very well appointed with complimentary tea & coffee. The bed had good quality bed linen and was extremely comfortable. The bathroom had an unusual slipper bath and plenty of candles for a romantic soak. The breakfast was excellent and freshly cooked for us. We cannot fault our stay and only wished we could have stayed longer. We will come back someday when the whales are in season.

What a lovely place and a perfect hostess - Belinda.
That we also saw whales, at this time of the year made our stay unforgetable.
We hope to come back sometime in the future.

We stayed at Auberge Provence for 2 nights in Sept 09. Belinda was a wonderful host - nothing was too much trouble and she booked all our restaurants, trips etc. The rest of the staff were also great - so friendly and efficient. We stayed in the Lavender Suite, which was beautifully furnished with a super comfortable bed and a huge and luxurious bathroom that we loved. As other reviewers have noted, it is on the ground floor so you may not be able to see whales from lying in bed, but you can get onto the cliff top path right from your patio doors, which is lovely. The breakfasts were absolutely delicious, everything home cooked, and beautifully presented. We felt Hermanus itself was a little disappointing, and it is clearly somewhere that has grown as a tourist town due to the whale watching opportunities - and therefore can be quite expensive to eat out, compared to the rest of south Africa. However, if you go there with the main objective of seeing whales, and not much else, you won't be too disappointed with the town. We would definitely recommend staying at Auberge Provence if you do go there, you won't be disappointed and we will certainly stay there if we return to Hermanus.
