“Quaint and romantic - great location and perfect getaway!”
Reviewed April 5, 2010

The hotel is perfectly situated for a romantic getaway from the city with walks along the coast just a few meters away. The hotel service is great and generally has a very cosy feel. All our needs were seen to at all times!

I work in Cape Town and I love every moment of my job but it is good to get away sometimes, experience new things. I travel regularly all over South Africa mostly with friends, in my travelling expeditions I aim to unravel unique undiscovered restaurants, bed and breakfasts, hotels or anything that piques my interest. Recently a friend and I decided to head out but a little closer to home than normally. I have visited Hermanus before and every time I always stayed at a friends or some other odd B&B. This time however, I was elated when my friend and I stumbled on to: as we now refer to it as ‘Hermanus hidden gem’ The Misty Waves Hotel. The sea views the rooms had were out of this world. One of the hotels slogan is “Lie in bed and watch the whale” every word is factual evidence. The staff was remarkable in every aspect, to assisting us with luggage, room service and helping us where they possibly could. The deco in the hotel was breathless, definitely in every sense of the word a boutique hotel. Our rooms were spacious and the ambience surreal. I could easily envisage taking a girlfriend here, the spa baths and four poster beds are definitely a bonus point. We lounge at the large pool and Jacuzzi the whole day, that was surrounded by lush lawns and vegetation that allowed you to feel relax and unwind. The restaurant on the roof top that looks over the entire Walker Bay of Hermanus, is where breakfast was served in the day and dinner in the evenings by candle light. The cuisines were amazing, and the menus had a bit of everything to cater to all. Amongst everything the hotel is situated only about 100 meters from town, so its easy to walk back and forth. I have a work conference approaching in end April and with the hotels outstanding conference facilities I will without hesitation drop a word about Misty Waves Hotel to my boss. Will be back soon! We stayed five nights in this well located and unusually appointed hotel. The public areas were cluttered with a theme-less collection of strange decorative objects. Our room was a very spacious double on the ground floor with a patio overlooking the small pool area. The room was overdone in faux French Louise XV furniture. It also seemed that the vast majority of the marbled floor had been removed (leaving only the extremities of the room tiled) and the resulting 'hole' filled with carpet underlay. This left a pronounced ridge at the join which was barely concealed by a large carpet. The room had a vague damp smell, which disappeared when the patio door had been open for a while or the air con on. On the last day we were visited by ants, which the duty manager said 'always come out of the walls when it is about to rain'. The guests' dining room on the second floor was excellent for breakfast and had stunning views across the bay. However, in the evening it became a dingy, unprepossessing, open-to-the-public restaurant ("The Waves") with a chef who did not know how to cook fish and unconcerned waiting staff. An irritating feature of our stay was the incessant playing of a Richard Clayderman tape in the lobby (next to our room), which one evening continuously looped on the final track. When asked to turn it off, the duty manager said "I'm not allowed to, the manager likes that tape."

Dear Sir
We as Management regret the fact that you did experience some problems and would have loved to solve it. We actually cater for all music tastes and there is a large choice of music available, as we surely want to please our guests. (We have a large diversity of guests and have to cater for each and every taste and would have loved to play you something of your choice.)

As for the size of the pool – we have never before received complaints about that as it might be that guests expect a boutique hotel to have a pool of this nature. Picture attached. We have never experienced any problems with ants – it could have been that the “Duty manager” was humouring you as if they stay in little boxes waiting for a rainy day to jump out of the walls. One of our BEST assets is our friendly and helpful staff that will do anything to please. There are 1,343 comments in our guest book from guests referring to our magnificent staff. We have however immediately taken this complaint to heart. Thank you for that.

We actually do not really cater for outside guests in our restaurant. Statistics show that we receive only 5 to 7 outside tables per week – we are treating our hotel guests as priority - the fish dish was up to date quite a favourite as it is freshly bought on a two daily basis, and we regret that you did not like the dish. Thanks for the comment we will work on it. As for the furniture we REALLY receive only compliments for the hotel & décor. If brought under our attention I am sure we could have moved you to another room of your choice if we were not fully occupied. Have a look at our website or pictures on here and see the VARIOUS lovely rooms you could have chosen from. Perhaps next time around if you visit Hermanus again we can make good to your bad experience.

Kindest Regards

Maxie Lerm

A WONDERFUL, NURTURING HOTEL THAT MAKES ONE VERY WELCOME.

You will enjoy your stay with a delicious, cooked breakfast right on the water with splendid views. The staff cannot do enough for one and respond immediately if there is anything at all. The only negative, a pool too slippery to get out easily and being unheated. Safe parking for free, wireless internet is available. The restaurant was medium.

Lovely hotel facing the ocean.

Our large room overlooked the pool with views across the ocean. Huge flat screen TV (well, it was the wrong time to look out to sea for whales!), massive bathroom with jacuzzi and large walk in shower, double sinks.

Great views from the restaurant situated on the third floor of the hotel, lovely seafood, all cooked to order. The staff couldn't have been more helpful or friendlier.

It's a five minute walk from the hotel into the town centre, where there are more bars and restaurants (we loved Fusion for amazing calamari and mussels, plus the owner drove us home!).

Hermanus is a lovely small town, with great views across the bay. Do go to Bouchard Finlayson for wine tasting (back towards the Wine Village junction and turn right, 2km up the hill). It has amazing views across the valley and lovely, reasonable wines.

Hermanus is also within easy striking distance of Arniston (feet in the Indian ocean), Cape L'Alguhas (southernmost point of Africa) and be back in Hermanus (feet in the Atlanic ocean) - all in one day!

Would definitely love to stay here again :)

A comfortable well-furnished hotel situated perfectly near the Hermanus town center and the sea.The hotel is family-owned which shows in the athmosphere.
Our room was upgraded because of our long stay (7 nghts) and it was very spacious, it had a large balcony facing to sea and private spa.
The owning family and the managing director were very friendly and helpful.
