Imagine a 5 + star hotel where you feels as comfortable and relaxed as you do at home! From the moment we walked in the door, we were in love with this hotel. Everything is chilled, relaxed and effortlessly elegant. They call themselves the "Birkenhead Family" and this is exactly how it felt, like going to stay with your favourite friends or family. The staff are just wonderful, attentive but not intrusive and it is clear that they all get on really well together and love working there. We have never felt so totally spoilt or equally, so chilled and relaxed in our lives!
We stayed for 4 nights as part of a 3 weeks wedding/honeymoon trip to SA. To be honest, had realised how good this hotel was, we would have reduced our time in Cape Town and stayed longer here. We had really bad weather whilst we were there, torrential rain with thunder and lightening most of the time (not usual for this area at all). However, even that could not dampen our feeling for the place. We curled up on huge fluffy sofas in front of roaring fires, reading books, watching the weather pound the coast and sipping on divine hot chocolate with large doses of various liqueurs added.
Birkenhead House is "All Inclusive". Please do not let that shadow your opinion, here, "All Inclusive" does not mean just cheap local drinks and mediocre food. The is a huge list of amazing wines to choose from and all of the staff are knowledgable about which wines to try based on your likes/dislikes. All (premium) spirits, liqueurs etc are also included as is the "not so mini" bar in your room. They will stock your room with whatever drinks you wish, if not available as miniatures, they just put a full 70cl bottle in the room for you and will replenish the room supplies as often as you need.
The rooms have snacks and facilities for fresh ground, caffetiere coffee and various teas but we were encouraged to ring down if we wanted hot drinks (any time, day or night) as they have a huge range of loose leaf teas and various types of coffee "which will always taste better than just plunger coffee or tea bags you can make here in the room".
Our room was huge with a bathroom almost the same size. The style was like a wonderfully (contemporary) tastefully decorated old chateau. We also had 2 balconies, one with a sea view, the other looking up an impressive mountain to the rear. The ladies who serviced the rooms did a wonderful job. They were always immaculate with treats as part of turn-down service. We will not spoil the surprise for any of you lucky enough to stay during a special event but our last night was made especially memorable.
Now for the food. WOW. It was amazing. We assumed from the initial list for breakfast that we would be required to choose what to order from the basic menu options (there were then daily specials too). WRONG - Full platters of everything arrived, just for us! Fresh fruit, yoghurt, muesli, meat platter, cheese platter, home-made muffins, croissants, smoothies etc. Then you get to choose your actual breakfast! Lunch was 3 courses and all were divine. There were 3 choices for each course but basically they would do anything you asked. Evening meals were also 3 courses with and extra soup and canapé course slipped in. Presentation was beautiful too. They worked a menu around whatever the best meat, fish veg etc they could get was. During our stay, various couples came and went and then (as we were out of season for both summer and the whales), the last 2 nights we were alone in the hotel. They chefs came and spoke to us each day and asked us to tell them whatever food we craved for and they would cook it for us! As though that were not enough, they then checked before serving each meal to ensure we had not changed our minds and wanted something else!
As the weather was bad, I did also make good use of the spa within the hotel. As with everything, it was excellent. Fabulous products and a very personalised service.
I really cannot speak highly enough of this hotel. It is not cheap but there is a huge difference between purely expensive and pricey but worth every penny. This is definitely the latter, I'd stay here again in a heartbeat.
