Description: The Cuckoo Tree was recommended by a friend. Had it not been we would not have come across it. Seating only ablout 30 people, it is an elegant and warm restaurant, run by a mother and her daughters. Lovely ambience, we noticed the others there looked like people "who know their food". An advanatage is you can take your own wine without corkage. Tastefully set tables. I would descibe the menu (dinner) as almost eclectic. Not large, but an emphasis on more unusual dishes, not the run-of-the-mill ones seen so often. We shares a double blue cheese souffle. Beautifully dopne, soft and featherlike and not too overpowering in terms of cheese. We each opted for the crispy duck - two generous portions and while crispy on the outside, the flesh was tender. Served with an orange and Van der Hum liqeur sause (the latter being a South African liqeur). it was served separately so as to prevent the duck becoming soggy. Vegertables just cooked - therefore crispy - without sugar added which is a disgusting South African habit. For dessdert we shared camembaert cigars in a rasberry coulis. Mmm. Afterwards sat out side - beautiful evening - drinking coffee and polishing off the last bit of wine. Were joined by Mum and daughters and ended up chatting for about another hour. I/we eat out a bit and travel a lot so have a pretty good idea of what is good and what is excellent. I would award 5 stars. If asked where my best dining experience was in the last year, I would have no hesitation whatsever nominating The Cuckoo Tree. Their telephone number: From outside South Africa: 00 28 3123430. From within: 028 3123430. They also serve teas, breakfast and lunch. And change the menu every now and then. Peter Francis Lakeside Cape Town South Africa

“A little gem in Hermanus”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed November 23, 2013

The Cuckoo Tree is a lovely little restaurant in Hermanus and whenever we have the opportunity, we stop there hoping for a free table as they're very popular. The restaurant is hidden away, perhaps a block or two from the main tourist restaurant area but this only adds to its charm. The food is wonderfully presented, very tasty, fairly priced and the menu options are creative - definitely not your run-of-the-mill type of menu. You have the option of sitting inside or outside in the tiny little garden setting, fenced in from the notorious Cape wind. The owners and staff are absolutely what make this place so wonderful. They are warm, friendly, attentive and you are treated as a friend. They noticed me taking photographs of the birds eating from the birdfeeder and without a word one of them brought a little bowl of grated cheese and put it next to our table to attract the birds closer to where we were sitting. They did everything to make us comfortable and have a good time without being pesky or lingering too long. This team has a recipe that works! In short, a very happy little place which I can highly recommend.

“Cooked to perfection”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed October 25, 2013 via mobile

Our family of five arrived without a reservation but were welcomed in despite the fact it was clearly going to be a busy night. From arrival the waitress Michelle was friendly, welcoming, and helpful recommending dishes to the younger members of our group. The line fish (kingklip) was perfect, the two fillets were melt in the mouth, the pork medallions were linger-over and the classic duck with orange sauce was appreciated by us all. And best of all Michelle never batted an eyelid to welcome three young children in a restaurant that was clearly geared to older diners. That is priceless. An excellent restaurant in a town that hosts some excellent dining.

Visited at lunchtime and had a smashing meal for 2. Plenty of fresh produce and lovely salads. Price was resonable but then again SA food is. Def visit again on our return.

“Warm hearted owners and wonderful food”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed October 8, 2013

I received wonderful service right from the beginning when I phoned to reserved a table. The owner was honest and told me the restaurant is small and they have a table of 10 celebrating a birthday. If we are wanting a quiet romantic evening then Saturday evening would be a better option but we booked for the Friday evening anyway. The birthday celebration added to the vibe of the restaurant and it was rather festive. We felt so welcome it was like having dinner with friends.... Service was great, owners and staff service the tables. My husband had Oxtail - which looked divine and he was licked his fingers. I had pork fillet which was very tasty and served with fresh veggies. Desserts were stunning too! Overall a wonderful evening!

“Great treasure discovery.”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed October 3, 2013

With all my travels I often find that the best restaurants are not on the main tourist "traps" and I am once again spot on with finding this great treasure called the Cuckoo Tree. The business is run by a mother and daughter team who treat theirs clients like they are their own family by giving them warm service with a laugh and a smile. The food is delicious with great effort put into the dishes. I would recommend this place to anyone who is visiting Hermanus to go eat there.
