If you visit Hermanus do not miss this opportunity. We were thoroughly entertained, educated and enthralled. Very impressed with both the professionalism and friendliness of the Southern Right Charters team. A huge commitment to conservation, local community support and education. I didn't expect to get this close to whales and seeing the reactions of my partner (who had never seen whales before) made it a unforgettable moment. I was impressed too at the quality and professionalism of their videographers, if you don't capture it all yourself their DVD of each trip is a must. I would highly recommend that any visit to Hermanus is rewarded with this whale tour.

Let's start with the positives....the staff at Southern Right Charters are polite, friendly and knowledgeable. The boat is the nicest one I saw of all the whale-watching tours. You can purchase a DVD that is 3 different segments.....one is of penguins and other wildlife in the area, one is footage of whales in general and the last is from your specific trip. The potential is there for this to be an awesome experience.

However, there were unfortunately more negatives than positives on our trip. In my opinion, when South Right Charters sends out an email or text (SMS) confirmation, they should put in big huge capital letters TAKE SEASICK MEDS EVEN IF YOU DON'T THINK YOU"LL NEED THEM. As scuba divers, we always take our seasick meds because there is just no reason to risk having a bad experience. Having said that so many people on the boat didn't do that and it was like a vomitorium on all but the top deck. GROSS! Some people luckily made it into the bags they were handing out but one gal sitting across from my husband didn't and it was all over the floor. Disgusting. They have added the information to their website but it's NOT in a place that is easy to find. It should be big and bold on every darn page of the website. Also, when you call to make a booking, they should tell you to make sure to take them. The bottom line is they KNOW this is an issue and they should take the steps necessary to prevent their passengers from a) having a horrible experience themselves and b) making it horrible for those of us who know to take the meds.

Next, the boat may be built for 70 people but that doesn't mean you have to fill it to capacity (or even close to it). I realize that they are running a business and want to make a profit but customer satisfaction is important as well. For example African Shark Eco-Charters in Simonstown take a MAX of 12 people on their boat even though it could hold many more. They put the customer first and make sure they have an incredible experience. As a result I've gone cage diving with sharks twice with them and will do so many more times as well as tell friends and family to do the same. Not so much for Southern Right Charters.

It was cold and rainy when we went out...obviously nothing SRC can do about that! But because of that, people were pretty much stuck in their seats so if the whales were on the right side of the boat, no one on the left could see anything and vise versa. I was pretty well prepared for the weather so I tried moving around to get good views no matter where the whales were. Easier said than done...it was so crowded inside that it was nearly impossible to get through the doors or to the restrooms or to the upper deck. Having three viewing areas is great in non-rainy weather but when it's pouring rain and everyone wants to be inside where it's dry it is a huge problem.

I ended up staying up on the top deck because it's the only place where people weren't throwing up but the sea was pretty rough on the way back so I was jerked around and soaking wet by the time I was back on land. Still...it was better than watching and hearing people puking their guts out!!!

"Let's do that again!" we cried out after our trip in Aug. 2012. And here we are now, a year later and a second whaling trip with SRC! We still love it, though the seas weren't that gentle this year. In fact the whole week before our trip (19/08) no whale cruises even left the harbour.
The trip starts with a safety briefing and some facts about whales and dolphins. Then the crew helps everyone aboard and before I even realised we'd already left the little harbour. This year we didn't get too many whales to see, but they were very keen to be photographed in all possible poses.
Unfortunately many people on board had a too large and too fatty breakfast and didn't pay attention to the skipper's recommendations on how to avoid sea-sickness ... so almost 90% of those aboard got ill. Therefore the skipper returned some earlier to the harbour: "To end their agony" :-(
We certainly will be back for more in some years!
Make sure to buy the DVD, we had ours sent to our home, and it arrived the same day as we did.

Whale watching was not on the top of our list, but we were advised by the tour agent to try it. Was glad we did it, as it was an experience of a life time. Watching these magnificent creatures in the ocean was more than awe inspiring, and makes us all wonder at the diversity of nature. Highly recommended!
