Loved that a safe steady boat & that if bit chilly have a nice inside area. If not a great sailor then you have the back but if out for adventure you have the front.
Great briefing & explanations while out

The 2.5 hour boat ride was a wonderful experience: a modern and clean catamaran, instructive, un-annoying explanations and sensitive approaches to the whales, which the captain miraculously detected in the choppy sea. We saw loads of tails, loggings and blow-outs nearby and even a couple of breaches (jumps), which is quite impressive considering that a whale weighs more than 40 tons....
It is worth the 600 Rand for the trip, but be sure not to get seasick. It gets bumpy out there, and we had a few desperate individuals on board who were cursing themselves for having set foot on the boat.

Whales, whales and yet more whales! Friendly attentive crew, clean and well maintained boat. An amazing day never to be forgotten. Whales breaching, whales swimming up to the boat, whales swimming under the boat ....... Thank you for a wonderful experience.

Dear Southern Right Charters Crew,

Just a short message of sincere Thanks to you all for making our Whale
watching trip in Hermanus such a memorable experience.

We were blown away with your informative engagement with your passengers and
highly respect the manner in which humans can visit the realm of the whales.

Although we are back in our World, our mind and memories are still out there
in Walker Bay.
It has left and indelible mark on our memories of the visit.

Thanks also for a superb DVD which incorporates our trip and the best of SRC
have experienced.

We are proud to recommend your company to anybody who shares our passion for
nature and "Observing and not Disturbing".
To all the landlubbers out there, dress warmly as it is colder on the sea and stay on deck to get use to the movement of the boat. It helps to prevent sea sickness!

Stunning trip.

Kind Regards,
Girish and Stephen

We booked a whale watching trip with Southern Right Charters in Hermanus, South Africa. The web page did not mention rough waters and preparation for seasickness, and we did not give the matter any thought until we arrived at the dock. Before boarding the boat, the crew told us that, under no circumstances, could they provide us with seasickness medication. This was a late and ominous warning.

It wasn’t long into the cruise before passengers started getting sick. Several began vomiting and many appeared uncomfortable. The crew handed out bags and did an adequate job of cleaning up. But the absence of prior warning about the possibility of seasickness was inexcusable. We are not novices, and have been on the ocean before. But we were caught completely off guard, and two out of the three of us were unable to enjoy the trip due to the nausea we felt.

In the end, the most inexcusable shortcoming of the crew was the captain’s scolding of the passengers over the public address system. The cruise (scheduled for 2-3 hours) was “being cut short because several passengers failed to take proper precautions for seasickness.” This was totally unnecessary. The trip was nearly two hours long, and many whales were sighted close to the boat. For those of us not overcome by nausea, the experience was what we paid for. But the gratuitous criticism of the sick and suffering passengers was completely out of line.

Thanks for your review as we take all comments positive and negative seriously and always endeavor to improve on our standards.
With regards to information on ‘what to bring along’ this is emailed to guests making use of our on line booking via our website and is clearly listed on our printed brochures however since your review we have also added a page to our website to assist guest that do not book via the “enquiry” tab on our website. The "What to bring" tab can be found under the "contact us" tab.
It is unfortunate that we are unable to offer motion sickness, but as we are not a registered pharmacy/chemist we are not legally allowed to prescribe medication.
We do apologize if the whale specialist commentary was not more sympathetic to the guests not feeling that well and are glad that you enjoyed your encounter with the whales.
