“Whale watching - An awesome Adventure”

Hermanus Whale Cruises
Reviewed November 6, 2012

My husband and friend went out for a whale watching tour with a tour group. Me being the sea sick person that I am had the only choice of being on shore. I parked in the Hermanus town near the restaurants. I sat at the peak watching spot and saw over 8whales. all swimming close to the shore so you could see them clearly - this was amazing. these creatures are massive and wonderful. One actually did the scene out of the movies - hop out of the water - really beautiful. If you havent been down there during whale season - something to mark on your calendar.
We need to preserve them.
While eating at the restaurants - you can view whales swimming past - really nice!

There is a fee when going on the tours - as they take you out.
Standing on the shore is for free!

We where a big group so were able to negotiate the rate better that ZAR 600 per person...but every minute of it was worth it.Life time experince of watching the whales at 100 mtrs distance and that also 2-3 fully grown with a baby...The rough seas was the only negative part...but we did it!!!

We went on a tour today at R600 each. The tourist information office advised us of this tour, but the company's we booked with didn't go in the end and we went with HWC instead when the original company told us 10 mins before leaving tht they wouldn't be going. HWC was a less professional looking outfit and older boat but for the same extortionate price. The trip was basically a Boat ride out to the whales, which we did see, but this was 40mins each way then 40 mins watching the whales. For the price this was a a total rip-off, but if you want to see the whales up close there is little choice, I personally would say the few companies that offer this trip all fix the price.

Conclusion, unavoidable if you want to see whales up close, but if you're unsure or price conscious don't do it spend the money on something else. 2 stars for seeing the whales and doing the bare minimum,

The boat has lots of space to move around to take photos. We were able to view the whales up close and at one stage the boat was surrounded by whales. There were Dolphins as well. It was definitely worth it.

We looked at the whales first from the land. We were able to see them but they were not very close to the shore. The whale caller mentioned there was a boat trip leaving at 12.00 which we could take and we did, the minibus collected us at the central view point and brought us to the boat. We had a very nice trip, the captain and guide really took the effort to show us whales, normally the trip is 2 hours, we were away for >2,5 as we were far out to have some nice views.
This is the only way to get close to the animals.
(not 100% sure which company we used, ask the whale caller)
