We were in Hermanus for just one night and decided to stay at Baleens which was the cheapest choice on Booking.com at £50 per night. On arrival we were met by the owner Nato who was very friendly and helpful but that was were the good things ended!

The whole guest house was like a ghost town and there was a strong smell of fish in the comunal areas. When we got to our room we were really dissapointed. The TV was on a stand but there was no aerial or plug to turn the thing on! The bedside light didnt work and the bathroom was disgusting.

There was no personal touches to the guest house and it really felt like the owners didnt take that much of an interest.

Pay the £20 extra to stay somewhere nicer....it will be worth it!

Baleens is outside Hermanus, so not within walking distance of the town, but it is good value for money and the rooms are comfortable and attractively furnished. There is a small plunge-pool, but the beach is a shortish walk away. There is a also a communal fridge and tea-and-coffee-making facilities. For the price, we had no complaints whatsoever!

The rooms are clean and large. Breakfast is fantastic. The staff is so nice and they even booked some trips for us at good prices.

It has a small plunge pool with small courtyard with table and chairs. The interior communal areas area also lovely.

If you wish to go to the beach it is only across the road and it is a lovely walk to the main part of town. It takes about 40 minutes by foot but it is a lovely walk. The staff told us to contact them if we needed a lift back. It is recommended to have a car if you wish to go into town often.

I would recommend this place to anyone.

My room had a view onto the bay with a deck, chair and table. The room was very comfortable and the breakfast was excellent. Above all the owner was very friendly and obliging yet not overbearing. An excellent place to stay!

Stayed here in Jan 2011 for 3 days.

Nothing at all was a problem for the staff at Balenns. They genuinely wanted to help us with everything that they possibly could. It almost felt awkward they were that helpful. Ive travelled the world and never have I been treated so specially by the staff here.

Given that its a backpackers also, just makes the accolades for Baleens even greater.

Only drawback was that we were sleeping downstairs and the walls are very thin. If someone is walking upstairs you can hear it very clearly. Normally would have angered me, however the staff were so lovely, you just couldnt possible get upset with them.

Well done Baleens, but get that Gyprock fixed asap haha.

Loved this place. The owner/manger was sincerely friendly, helpful and welcoming. The breakfast was delicious. The rooms were cozy, clean and comfortable. It was quiet and peaceful. It had a home away from home feeling. It was the best place we stayed at on our round the world trip. It was safe and enjoyable place. It was close drive to see the whales. We look forward to returning there to celebrate another anniversary.
