Sitting on the rocks! Their seafood platter is a good option. The food is good, no frills and the service friendly. Book during busy season to secure a table in the front.

“Dine by the sea, superlative views.”
Reviewed December 17, 2012

Bientang's Cave must have one of the world's most awesome locations. It is set in a cave in the rock face ,which was home to a khoi strandloper at the turn of the 19th century. Steep steps ( not for the fainthearted take you there), there is an easier access. We went with friends for lunch on a public holiday, I booked first thin fo a 1pm table, by leaving a message and was impressed when tmy booking was confirmed about an hour later.
The restaurant was buzzing when we arrived but we were quickly shown to our table by a friendly waiter.
The views from the deck were magic. In whale season its not unusual for the whales to come within 100 meters of the rocky shore. Friendly sea gulls kept their distance and perched on nearby rocky outcrops. As it was low tide , diners spilled out onto the flat rocks in front of the cave.
Within 5 minutes a waiter had taken our drinks order and we settled down to enjoy a lovely sauvignon blanc.
The menu offered various starters, salads , fish and meat dishes. Being by the sea , we kept with the theme and ordered seafood. The calamari was good, and the seafood potjie excellent. Service was efficient and friendly. The clientele was mixed and included quite a few family groups with children. Booking in season is essential. Overall impression, good food in an extraordinary setting

“Unbelievable View”
Reviewed December 2, 2012

Suggested by local friends we planned lunch at Bientang's Cave. Quite a few steps steps later we arrived at the most amazing view. Out of the cave on the rock plate is most probably the best seats in town. Seabirds, dolphins, kelp and the ocean smell! Good menu, large portions and extra tip for the waiters that negotiates the slope with each order. Don't miss it even if it rains.

“Lunch in the cave”
Reviewed November 25, 2012

Our family of 4 had lunch at Bientang's Cave. It was a cold, rainy day but the atmosphere made up for it. Plus we saw whales! The staff was very accomodating and helpful with our kids. The kids even took home a cool souvenir that the restaurant gave them! Enjoyed! But be careful climbing down!

“Lovely View to relax”
Reviewed November 22, 2012

We have been here twice. Service is great, view is to die for! Food is good, maybe a small menu but portions are huge and tasty. If you have time, alone or with friends and family...I would definitely recomend a few hours enjoying the best venue in Hermanus. Inexpensive and a good feeling when you leave with a happy belly and a happy wallet ;-)
Give it a go, but make sure to book, especially now in the season.
