“Consistently good”

We are now regulars at Fabios. The food is consistently good, nice crisp pizza, great pasta and consistently good service. Great italian atmosphere. If your in Hermanus and want Italian, you have to give Fabios a try.

“Disappointing”
1 of 5 bubbles Reviewed January 2, 2014

If you say it tastes like in Italy - sorry...you have never been! The food quality was just moderate. So it's the service. We counted how many times we asked for bred - six times! Initially we wanted to have some pizza bread with our startes. As they don't offer this, he got us mouthwathering with the special home made bread which will come right away. Remember: we asked six times for it! Then we got 4 slices of - sorry to say - ordinary white toast bread! Not very Italian. Initially we ordered two portions of seafood lasagne. After 40 minutes waiting the waiter told us, the lasagne is finished. That of course can happen - especially when you cook fresh. Alternatively we chose the seafood spaghetti. For us unfortunately a bad choice. The pasta was overdone and to our surprise it contains mostly surimi (industrial made fish substitute). We asked the owner, why the hell he's using this stuff as we are at the ocean and expect some fresh stuff - at least mussels or prawns? He replied that this is part of the ready deep frozen seafood mix an he does not buy fresh fish! Anything to say? Never again and definitely not authentic Italian - sorry to say!

Dear JoesChob, hope you are well & returned safely to Germany, I must say with linguistic skills and interpretation we sincerely apologise for not meeting your expectations and the lack of service as I was there myself and would have assisted if I had known of the incidents regarding the bread, and running our of our so favourite and delicious seafood lasagne as it is our own recipe and have been making it for years. With regards to my response to your question regarding the surimi (industrial made fish substitute) and fresh fish, my response was as follows, we do not get fresh prawns on our coast, we do get mussels and that we use. With regards to fresh fish from our coast line , it is available only when the fisherman can go out to sea and that I always have fresh fish , such as Kabaljoe, Cob, Kingklip Cape Salmon. We get products that are part of a frutti di mare witch include Calamari, Crab meat, shrimps, mussels etc , we are not in such a fortunate position as you are in Germany or my country Italy to get an array of all products you are referring to. I am not unique to any other restaurant in South Africa .regards Fabio ( Apologies for the service and each others misunderstanding)

“Good Italian Option”

Would certainly recommend them - had delicious bruscetta and whilst salads may not be their forte - the main meals and traditional foods are clearly strong points. They actually have a very large menu.

“Great service and good food”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed December 28, 2013

We came across Fabios walking around the town - we were made to feel very welcome and therefore returned to make a booking. That welcome extended to the service and was one of the reasons we returned a second night.

The staff were all friendly and helpful. The (English) waiter was full of recommendations for local places to visit and obviously knew his wines, offering some useful tips on the Hemel en Aarde valley's better, less commercial offerings. It was therefore the staff, as much as the food, that encouraged our second visit.

We thoroughly enjoyed our two pasta dishes - a simple vegetarian (with spinach, sun dried tomatoes, mushrooms and feta cheese) and Carciofi (marinated artichokes with garlic, good quality olive oil and just enough chilli to give it a kick). They were served in the pan, and placed on wooden boards, decorated with carved wine labels. This kept the dish hot while we served ourselves.

The wine list included a good local selection from the Hemel en Aarde Valley, including a bright and elegant Spookfontein Cabernet, from a tiny vineyard. The scent of red fruits - currant, red cherry and damson - accompanied by a hint of vanilla and green pepper, sat happily alongside the Italian food. On our second visit we had a spicy aromatic Shiraz/Mourvèdre blend, La Vierge's Anthelia. This was a good accompaniment to the Gorgonzola gnocchi, although a little overwhelming for the lemon, spinach and feta risotto (which did not have a strong lemon astringency). We were encouraged to try the Limoncello Zabaglione - not too heavy, but fairly alcoholic. We left, content but very full.

“Italiano”

Food is great, treatment excellent. A bit pricey, but worth every penny. The seafood soup is a meal on its own. The bruschetta is absolute divine. Pizzas yummy - give it a try.
