Malvern Manor Country Guest House
Ranked #12 of 62 George B&B and Inns
Reviewed March 22, 2008

After our 3 night stay in CT we arrived at Malvern Manor 6 March 2008 and were warmly welcomed by Sandra & Michael. This was the hottest day so far (35c) so a dip in the beautiful pool was more than welcome. Our room was spotless and had everything we needed for our 2-night stay. The backdrop to Malvern Manor is breathtaking as was the sunset. Breakfast was to order: fruit, cereal, homemade bread, toast, cooked breakfast (but don't ask for fried bread eh Sandra? ho ho ho). If you are planning to stay in the George area of SA then we can certainly recommend this stop-off.

We only stayed here for one night and wish it had been longer - Sandra and Michael made us feel totally welcome and at home in their lovely house - such a shame to only touch down. Truly lovely grounds and the most amazing breakfast. Definitely recommend staying here.

We arrived late afternnon and were warmly welcomed by Sandra who couldn't have been more helpful. We'd run out of clean clothes but our washing was put straight into the machine and was back freshly ironed by breakfast the following day. The accommodation was the amongst the best of the Portfolio B&Bs we had encountered in two weeks travelling. The room was spacious, very smartly decorated and had the usual facilities, fridge, TV, CD player etc. The bathroom was spotless and spacious.

Malvern Manor location has the feel of a British farmhouse, slightly isolated and surrounded by fields. However, it is only a few minutes from the town centre and less than a mile from the Fancourt golfing centre. George golf course is also very close.

There are wonderful views of the mountains from the garden which has a decent sized pool. Breakfast was normal by SA standards, ie the complete spread of everything from cooked English to SA fresh fruit, cereals and yoghurt, beautifully prepared and presented.

We thoroughly enjoyed our 2 night stay and would recommend Malvern Manor to family and friends without reservation.

This is a wonderful place to stay if you want peace and quiet in a spectacular location at the foot of the Outeniqua Mountains. The owners, Michael & Sandra could not do enough for us and we felt thoroughly spoilt! One of our best days was just sitting in their beautiful garden birdwatching and admiring the mountain view. There is good golf to be had at George Golf Club and a bit further afield at Pezula in Knysna. We did not play Fancourt but golfers should be aware that there is only one course available to them there if they are not residents. We did, however, eat in several of the Fancourt restaurants and without exception the food was excellent. To sum up, an ideal place to stay if you are en route from Cape Town to Port Elizabeth.

What a lovely out of town guesthouse on a farm As we approached Malvern Manor we were immediately struck by the position of the property. with a mountain back drop and a long private drive which started with an avenue of trees and changed to azaleas in full flower flower . We were met by Michael and Sandra, who welcomed us into their house as friends, and gave us a cup of tea after our long journey. The drive from Cape Town was longer than we expected.

We stayed in the Savannah Room, which was spacious and had everything in it we needed, plus a few extras. A great touch was the heated blanket as we found the nights were still chilly in September.

The pool was sparkling and inviting, ( I am very fussy about pools being clean), even though they had solar heating it was still not warm enough for us to swim, although we were tempted, but the views from the pool and the garden were dramatic and as the sun set, the mountains glowed orange.

Breakfasts were excellent , with fresh fruit and home made bread with a choice of full english or continental.

There was a great choice of restarants nearby, which Michael very kindly drove us to at night, as we did not want to drive ourselves in the dark. Be aware though that restarants close quite early in George, people seem to eat earlier than in Cape Town.

The added advantage as golfers is that they are just 2 km from Fancourt Golf Estate and an easy drive of George golf course, which we also played. The Golf courses in this area are very well maintained and rated some of the best in South Africa.

We had a great time there, and met other guests who were returning for the third visit.

Malvern Manor is a good location for golfing and exploring, the Garden Route and Little Karoo. This suited us as we prefer to play golf on alternate days. We are already planning our return trip. A tip is to ask Sandra to book your tee off times in advance.
