“beautiful views and central location make this a great Garden Route stopover”
Reviewed September 21, 2012

The Garden Route along South Africa's south coast is a truly beautiful part of the country - rolling hills, craggy cliffs, beautiful beaches and cola colored rivers all blend together for a smorgasbord of natural beauty. Far Hills is right in the middle of it all. Stunning views over the Outeniqua mountains just outside of the town of George.
Beautifully appointed, comfortable rooms make for a good rest after a day of exploring this beautiful area. I found Far Hills good value for money and well located along the Garden route.

We stayed for two nights and the staff gave us an incredible winter deal (cheaper than a private room in a backpacker hostel in Wilderness!) which also included a hot breakfast. The lodge is in a beautiful setting just off the N2. It is only about a five-minute drive from the Garden Route mall. Our room included a large, comfortable bed, gas-burning fireplace, fridge, and small balcony--lovely! The food at the restaurant was reasonably priced and very tasty. My friends enjoyed the kudu and wildebeest steaks, salads, and chicken schnitzel. The sushi bar (open Wednesday thru Saturday) was staffed by a very nice lady who made decent sushi rolls--ex.) California rolls ranged from 20-35 ZAR--generous portions-- and the Tom Yum soup was yummy. House wines were 10 ZAR. The lodge's service was excellent and we really enjoyed our stay--you won't be disappointed if you stay there

My mom, sister and I spent a night at the Far Hills Hotel on 22 July. We booked 2 rooms. It was a really good deal, but knowing now what we would've gotten, we would rather have paid a little more and stayed somewhere else.
My sister and my room was really dirty (crumbs on the carpet and dust on the furniture). The bathroom was rather disgusting. The shower had not been cleaned - even more apparent from the soap of a previous guest that had been left in it!) The dispenser in the shower was also empty. The towels were dirty and they smelt funny.
We are really not fussy travellers, but found it a bit creepy to stay there. My moms room had only 2 working lights and, although there was a kettle in the room, it did not work.
We did mention all of this to the staff at reception on the morning we left, but the only reply we got was that it had been really busy and therefore the room checks could not have been done. Unacceptable!
One thing we did enjoy was the bar in the hotel. We had some drinks and dinner there. The food was good and very reasonably priced.
I do believe the hotel has great potential, but work needs to be done.

Thank you so much for taking the time to review our Backpacker rooms. I am so sorry to hear about your horrible stay. I remember you mentioning the light bulbs to me the next morning. I agree, these things are unacceptable, bit of a slip up and we will try harder. Please feel free to come visit us again and we will be glad to have anybody upgrade to a deluxe room at any time. I wish we could have done that for you. Kind Regards Prieur.

My wife and I have stayed at the Far Hills hotel on a few occasions and were very happy with the accommodation. The staff are casual and friendly and they bend over backwards to assist you in any way they can to make your stay a pleasant one. Because we enjoyed our stay there we hired their venue for our daughter's 21st birthday party and again it turned out to be winner!
The staff were once again extremely helpful and the cost was really affordable.
Well done to the owner and staff of Far Hills, you will see us again!

Having travelled extensively for both business and pleasure I can honestly say I have never stayed at a hotel that had the intimacy of a guest house and the energy of a backpackers combined into one.

Truly a new way of approaching hospitality, and a welcome change at that.

Far Hills staff are what makes this hotel something special. Instead ofbeing greeted by a wall of cloned servers, you instead are treated to first class attentive service from some of the most lively and fun personalities you will ever meet.

We were lucky enough to be upgraded to a deluxe room, and it was as spacious as a small bachelor flat, with tasteful decorations and an awesome view over a gorgeous valley and mountain.

If satellite tv and designer shampoo bottles are your thing, this hotel is likely not for you. But if you are still old school and believe hospitality is about the service, value for money and unique flavour of each establishment then this place will treat you to a wonderful time.

On a last note...we ate lunch and dinners at the hotel and didnt expect much as the prices were very inexpensive. Yet each time we were blow away with fantastic meals, that had an honest, home cooked feel to them. And for someone who doesnt eat salad, the salad they serve with almost all their dishes, is fantastic.

Again a few unique touches really make for a memorable experience.
We will certainly be back as soon as possible.

Thank you so much for taking the time to review our hotel. I must say I think that you captured the spirit of Far Hills very well in just a few short lines. It is so refreshing to get an honest review that is both positive and helpful. "We will take a look at the shampoo situation". I and hope that you will be visiting us again soon. Kind Regards Prieur

Visited this hotel en-route to the Eastern Cape. Was attracted by the special offer of only R 360 for 3 (2 adults and child) for b&b - during school holiday! Originally booked the cheapest room, but when we got there we discovered we were upgraded. Hotel reminds of an old ski lodge. We had a large room, gas fireplace and enormous bed. Although not brand new the room was spotless. Breakfast basic buffet with fruit, juice, cereal and few hot options. Be aware - skip the breakfast rush - we ordered omelet, but was told it was impossible as there were only two staff members and many guests. Got some great fried eggs instead! Great stay over option if you do not want to pay the exorbitant prices some of the other institutions charge in the area.
Last tip - we booked through an internet booking site. Our bill at the hotel was more than charged on the booking form, they however immediately corrected this once we pointed this out.
