“Wonderful Hotel”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed May 10, 2008

This was a wonderful experience, the hotel is a gem. Check in was friendly and efficient. Nice to have a welcome drink as we checked in straight from the airport after an overnight flight. As our room was not ready yet, we were shown without prompting, to a small room which had a sitting area and bathroom where we could shower and change. Just what we needed.

For a standard room our accommodation was a reasonable size and well appointed. There was a small patio area outside the room, though I think not all standard room have these. The hotel is in two buildings, The Cellars, and the Hohenort. The latter has a heated swimming pool and views over the small vineyard. It also houses the Cape Malay restaurant. The Cellars where we stayed has an unheated pool in a pleasant secluded area.. The reception, bar and main restaurant are also in this building. The gardens were well kept and pleasant to stroll through, though unfortunately past their best being late in the season. All the staff were helpful and efficient.

We tried both restaurants during our stay. The main restaurant, The Greenhouse was excellent, it was busy (always a good sign) and service efficient. The food was some of the best we have had in South Africa. The Cape Malay was more informal and the food good. Breakfasts were very good, lovely fruit and nice cooked breakfast, served on the terrace. As befits the Cellars, no ordinary birds looking for crumbs, a Peacock strolled out of garden and wandered around.

The hotel is situated is a wooded residential area on the slopes of table mountain and very near the Kirtenbosch Botanical Gardens. The journey round to Cape Town takes only 20-30 minutes on dual carriageway roads fro most of the distance. The airport is a similar distance.

We just loved the old fashioned colonial feel about this hotel. i have never experienced a place when the hustle and bustle of daily maintainence was so evident. The staff were polishing , gardening, arranging flowers, smiling...it was great. We really felt looked after.
Our room was the best positioned room in the hotel. A luxury double nestled in between two suites. We had a lovely verandah with loungers and table and chairs.
We ate only once in both restaurants but breakfast outside in the morning was wonderful.
Best hotel we stayed in during our trip to South Africa

The Cellers is about a 20 minute drive from the waterfront in Capetown, but is more than worth the diversion. We stayed in the cottage, a small detached building close to the main hotel. The accomodation was everything you could ask for, large bedroom and seperate living room, and a small dining room should you choose not to eat in either of the two main hotel restaurants. A decision we never had to make - the food at the Cellers is some of the best we have ever had in SA. We were there three days, and dined twice in the Greenhouse, once in the Cape Malay. All meals were faultless, perfect food perfectly presented. For that alone I would recommend you go there. But to add to the overall experience, the staff were friendly and very efficient, the wine list was the size of a telephone directory (with prices that make you wonder if you are buying the vinyard with the bottle when you buy wine in Ireland) and the grounds were beautifully maintained. And the final touch, something that sums up the attention to the smallest of detail that makes the Cellers stand out amongst the rest - the Irish Flag was flying obove the entrance to the hotel throughout our stay!
The distance from the Capetown was no handycap. The hotel provide a car and driver whenever needed at prices only slightly above calling a cab.
This is one hotel I would recommend without hesitation.

This place is a gem, and without a doubt one of the best country hotels I've ever stayed in.

We stayed three nights in this hotel and enjoyed it very much. Rooms and restaurants were exactly what we were looking for. If you want to enjoy a calm relaxing break after a few days in a hotel at the Waterfront this is the place to be.

We stayed at this hotel for the first 2 nights of our honeymoon. Staff were friendly and jump at our every need. The accomodation and grounds were very quite and peaceful and the location good for touring around Cape Town. We will certainly return and recommend this hotel without reservation.

P.S. Be sure to request a private dinner in the wine cellar!

We discovered the Cellars by accident - transferring from its sister hotel in Plettenburg Bay for a night between our travels. This hotel is a delight. We found it very reminiscent of Le Manoir aux Quat Saisons in terms of the landscaping around the hotel. Each bedroom/suite is decorated differently, all in delightful style to a really consistent and high standard. The breakfasts were the best we've ever had in a hotel, although we were a little less impressed by the restaurants in the evening. The management and staff were all really friendly and helpful - a real home away from home. We'll definitely be back!
