“Service was lacking - but good food.”
3 of 5 bubbles Reviewed March 11, 2013

Had only the waiter been "switched on" as opposed to slow and forgetful, this whole experience would have been fine. I´m sure the other waiters seemed great, but ours just wasn´t "there".

The food was great and it was fun to see the kitchen growing their own herbs. There is a wine tasting facility adjacent.

There aren´t really any nice views, you have to continue further in on the wine estate for that.

“Where's the River?”
3 of 5 bubbles Reviewed March 2, 2013

Having eaten here a number of times over the last few years, I've just realised I've never noticed a river! If it was named after The River Cafe in Hammersmith London, then it has a bit of a way to go.

The menu choices were safe - when available - fish pie was "off" the day we went. Serving curried broccalli soup on a day where the temperature was going to reach 29 degrees C seemed a little odd!

The smoked slamon pate was good, the chicken liver pate, a curious ginger colour! The line fish and chicken supreme passed muster, but the poached eggs on rosti with a bernaise sauce was missing something - possibly enough rosti to soak up all the egg yolk!

I am slightly allegic to waiters who try hard to press the specials, particularly when prefaced by may I recommend the wonderful.........!

I too found the unsupervised children a little waring, I don't blame the restaurant for this, just the parents who should ensure their off spring are reasonably behaved. Part of the problem I suspect is that parents are in the tasting room which has direct access to the restaurant
courtyard.
I recently saw a sign in a restaurant in rural South Africa which said:
"Unsupervised children will be given a double espresso and a kitten!"
Perhaps The River Cafe should give this some consideration!!!!!!

“Nice for children if you like them”

I went on a Sunday and was disappointed by the over abundance of young children running around. Food was good, nothing truly special

“Always delightful”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed February 2, 2013

The River Cafe on the Constantia Uitsig wine farm, has gone through a few ups and downs as chefs have moved on and been replaced. Once again, however, it has found its place as a lovely breakfast and lunch spot.
The outdoor setting makes the restaurant - an old schoolhouse nestling beneath shady trees, and situated in a colourful garden. The ambience is relaxed, mellow and altogether delightful. It's a good spot to stop for lunch and then while away the afternoon over food, wine and coffee.
The menu isn't as extensive as it used to be but it caters for everyone and the food is good - definitely worth going back for - and their Eggs Florentine are legendary.
The only drawback is the seating service on arrival. Twice now we've had to hang around waiting for someone to direct us to a table. Happily the waiting staff more than make up for this lapse.
Booking is essential for breakfast and lunch as the place is always full.

“River Cafe”

Always a must when we visit. Great service, amazing breakfasts and a gorgeous location. A bit disappointed with their (Constantia Utsig) 2012 Savignon Blanc which we picked up at their wine outlet next door.
