“Good place, but they were out of my first two entree choices, which was disappointing”

The Deckhouse crab shack
Ranked #288 of 1,323 Restaurants in Cape Town Central
Description: The Deckhouse Crabshack brings something new to the foodie scene in Cape Town – don your plastic bib, order up and get stuck in, there really is no other way to enjoy this kind of food. The menu mimics an American-style crab shack, where the portions are big, the flavours are bold and the atmosphere is convivial and unpretentious. Set in a well-known spot on Kloof Street, it has a lovely outdoor deck with views of Table Mountain. The decor is beachy and includes some cool touches like the sofas made from boat halves and whitewashed tables and chairs. It’s light, fresh and fun.

Very casual restaurant with good service and tasty food. The fresh oyster appetizer was fantastic. I had the Indonesian shrimp dish and my wife had the shrimp with butter and garlic flavors....both were great. The only disappointment was that the restaurant was out of lobster and kingklip, my first two choices. Be prepared to pick out the shrimp and get really messy!

Also, the ambiance is quirky. There was no room available on the outside deck (except for an uncomfortable looking picnic table), so we sat inside. Unfortunately we sat next to the beverage cooler that spewed an annoying noise all evening. We recommend arriving early to get the best seating.

I liked this restaurant because it had a beat up rustic feel to it. The food was good but over priced. It was the most expensive meal I had in South Africa, it was King crab legs but it certainly wasn't the best meal I had. I wouldn't have gone for this but my first two choices of the menu were not available. They also did not have my first two chioces of wine. Maybe I just went on a bad night as it seems very popular.

My husband I dined here last night and had a lovely experience. Attentive staff, great good and a wonderful ambiance, especially if you happen to be there on a warm summer evening. It has a really cool laid back, surfers vibe and attracts a mix of people inlcuding plenty of tourists. Always make a booking as the place is not too big and gets filled up quickly on Friday evenings and weekends (we had tried to make a booking on Thursday for Friday and were unsuccessful). Parking is plenty on the side streets and the Blue swimmer bucket is a must.

Had the worst meal ever. Ordered mussels which were so tiny and far too salty, was told I would get salad and veg as don’t do carbs...only got a minuscule bowl of veg. Would definitely not recommend and certainly will not go back

Faith the manageress has no idea how to deal with customers. Waiter kept on having to apologize for drinks they didn't have, order one coke then they don't have anymore, order a Heineken then then don't have anymore. The blue swimmer crabs had absolutely no meat just shells with a sauce. Very disappointing, will definitely not go back or recommend to anyone.
