I have been introduced to Anatoli many years ago and have been back a number of times when visiting Cape Town over the years; however not for the past five. So it was with a little trepidation that I suggested to a group of colleagues with me at a conference that we go there for dinner. Working for a global mining company means that we travel a lot and get to experience dining at its very best (and worst). We are not easily impressed.
Anatoli ticked all the boxes. Our orders covered almost the whole (huge) tray of meze, as well as most of the mains on offer – and every single dish was delicious. The service was attentive and the setting superb. The restaurant has aged gracefully over the years with time adding a welcoming, lived-in patina to it all. Being a chilly winter’s evening, the air-conditioning was set just right, adding sufficient warmth without leaving one feeling stuffy.
The portions were generous, and following on that excellent selection of meze, some mains were not polished off completely. However, this was not for a lack of trying by the guests.
Anatoli must be doing something right to be still relevant after more than two decades in the business. In Cape Town there is no better place to be on a chilly winter’s night.
