The portions are rather small, although tasty - in our opinion expensive for what you get - obviously you pay for the promenade setting. We sat outside and people were smoking while we were eating, rather off-putting. Will we go back? Probably yes, because of the setting ...

We were at La Perla a year ago and loved their calamari. Nothing has changed - still so well cooked - simple grilling with some fresh chillie and lemon. That with a bottle of bubbly on their terrance watching the sun set is surreal.

The only reason I am giving four stars to this place is because I asked if my food would be grilled, but I got a pan fried dish instead. The chef as well as waiters simply must know the difference.

Outside of that, my meal was fantastic. You must try mussels here, probably the best I have ever had.

This place is not touristy and so it is less crowded and more relaxed.

We went last weekend, under the impression La Perla is some sort of Sea Point institution. Rather disappointing, all told. The line fish itself was OK - only one choice though - but the rice & vegetables were deeply, deeply average. The veggies tasted like they were from a tin, or possibly from frozen. Boiled to within an inch of their lives.
Service was OK, by South African standards.
Not value for money, IMO. La Boheme, just a few hundred yards away, and similarly priced, is in a different league.
Nice location, and probabaly great for outdoor dining / drinking if you have the weather, which we didn't.

This restaurant was recommended to us by our tour guide and we were so glad we took his suggestion. It is essential to make a reservation at this very busy restaurant. Overall we were quite impressed by the quality of seafood dishes in South Africa but this meal was fabulous. We chose the seafood platter consisting of lobster, crayfish, two kinds of prawns, mussels and calamari. The platter literally stretched across our table and the food could have fed three to four easily. The wine they recommended paired excellently with the well prepared seafood. Yes, it was our most expensive meal in SA but it was sooooo worth it.
