“Poor food, seems to be surviving on its past reputation”
Reviewed December 30, 2012

We ate at La Perla between Xmas and NY and were very disappointed by the service, food and overall experience. The waiters are all old and 'doddery', not at all intuitive to your needs. The chairs very old fashion and uncomfortable and the less said about the food the better! Oysters were dry and smelly, pasta came all stuck together and tasteless and the Sole was over cooked and thoroughly poor. Not much I can say positive about this place which is a shame. It in a nice location, just needs some freshening up of decor, changing of staff and probably a new owner!

“No flirtatiousness waiters”
Reviewed December 22, 2012

One thing I love about Italian waiters in Italy is the way they engage with customers. La Perla was very busy on our visit, and the staff were fairly perfunctory. We chose to eat inside as there was a fair bit of noise from the traffic when we arrived.

The food was average - my husband loved his seafood dish, but my pasta dish was overcooked and bland.

I think it'd be fun to go there with a group, but not quite so good for a couple.

“Been eating here for 30 years now”
Reviewed December 20, 2012

Maybe more then 30 years I have been eating here. There grilled calamari, beef tagliatta, the old toasted steak sandwiches, all are excellent. The management has changed over the years, but I still have my regular waiters that take great care of me. Make sure you ask for their house made bread, thick crust, and perfectly toasted.

“Best calamari”
Reviewed December 19, 2012

An institution in Cape Town and still going strong. Prices are no longer over the top either. Demsey served us on 2 occasions and must rank as one of Cape Towns best!! On both occasions he created a special platter for us. If you like calamari - then you must try their grilled version.

“No place better”
Reviewed December 13, 2012 via mobile

I am honestly surprised to see anything but 5 out of 5. Sure the place has slow service from time to time, but this is an iconic spot that if you miss in Cape Town you've missed Cape Town and all it stands for. My favourite is either the lovely green pesto on angel pasta or the local lobster. You can't help feeling important here. It's just fabulous
