Derwent House Boutique Hotel
Ranked #5 of 110 Hotels in Cape Town
Certificate of Excellence
Reviewed September 23, 2009

As with other reviews I only have positive things to say about Derwent House. We stayed at the hotel for 2 nights as part of our honeymoon in room 3. The staff at the hotel are extremely helpful, in particular Vuyo who helped us with restaurant recs and dealt with any queries we had. The free use of a laptop in the reception area was very useful.

Carol arranged a transfer from the airport which was great and very reasonable (c.£30) as well as car hire through CABS who dropped the car to us at Derwent House (both I would recommend). The area is safe to walk around with some nice shops, bars and restaurants within walking distance on Kloof Street. We didn't walk to the waterfront but the hotel use a good taxi company who we used a few times (only about £5 and 10 minutes ride)

I would certainly stay here again - The V&A Waterfront is nice to visit but hotels are overpriced - Tamboerskloof is an interesting area with alot of character and is a stones throw of all the action.

After over thirty hours of travel from Boston, my wife and I arrived in Cape Town late one Sunday evening and made our way to Derwent House to begin our long-planned and much anticipated Honeymoon. As it turned out, we couldn't have asked for a better place to start things off at. We woke up our first morning to clear blue skies and a towering view of Table Mountain from our room, which the staff advised us at breakfast to go climb before any clouds rolled in.

Starting that morning and continuing everyday during the entire week of our stay the staff was ready to assist us with transportation, dinner recommendations and reservations, and lists of things to see and do in the Cape Town area. The rooms were comfortable and spotless, and the common area was a relaxing place to sit each evening near the fire with a glass of wine or complimentary port.

As for the location, we were at first concerned that maybe the hotel was located a bit far from things, but that didn't turn out to be the case at all. It is at the base of Table Mountain, and its a good 45 minute walk down to the waterfront area if you're up for it, but during the day we did this walk a few times, since it takes you down the major shopping and restaurant arteries of Kloof St. and Long St. In the evenings, its about a 5 minute cab ride that I think cost around $6 or $7USD back from the waterfront. It's also easy and safe to walk down Kloof St. in the evening, and down onto parts of Long St. We didn't experience any safety or security issues, and never felt uncomfortable walking around (though, like in any major world city at night, always be alert).

Cape Town is really an incredible city with so much to offer for just about anyone, and the team at Derwent House will make sure that no matter what you are looking for, you'll have an unforgettable trip. I should also note that in the months leading up to our trip, the owners took the time to answer a number of e-mails that we sent over, which helped us set up our plans for not only Cape Town, but some other parts of Africa we were traveling to afterwords. This kind of dedication to customer service before you even arrive is what sets places like Derwent House apart from the rest.

All the reviews are accurate, and Derwent House has a well deserved ranking as the top place to stay in Cape Town. When we return one day, and we plan to, Derwent House will be at the top of our list.

We stayed at Derwent House for the first 3 nights of our honeymoon and couldn't have asked for anything more. The hotel is very funky and stylish, but the overriding feeling was of home from home. Carol and the team made us feel totally welcome, and nice little touches such as ideas of what to do when it was raining in Cape Town, or the next day's weather forecast being put in your room each night were really nice.

The breakfasts were very good...as was the free cake, tea and port! The recommendations for restaurants were good too - we would highly recommend the Bombay Bicycle Club too; had an amazing meal there.

We booked Derwent House for two nights after reading reviews on Trip Advisor and all comments were spot on - this is a truly lovely hotel which cannot come too highly recommended. When booking I was a bit worried about sending credit card details but this was all fine and the emails that Carol sent - with loads of useful info - were brilliant. We decided to both get a transfer provided by the hotel (at 280R - just over £20 but easy as pie, and money well spent) and we also used the car hire company recommended by Carol. [Cabs Car Hire - again, excellent, spot on and very reasonable, who couldn't do enough to help us].
We were due to be a little late so on the day we were due to arrive, I called ahead to be met by a friendly North Eastern accent - Jo. This wasn't a problem and as soon as we arrived, we booked in to our room which was small-ish but large enough for the two of us, and (though it was too cold to use!) a nice balcony, overlooking Lion's Head and Table Mountain - well, on the days the mountain decide to pop out from behind the cloud!
The hotel itself is very swish, all warm furnishings and really welcoming. We spent a couple of very happy afternoons helping ourselves to the complimentary coffee and cake from the kitchen. The honest bar works really well and you have everything you need - we certainly didn't miss room service.
Jo was full of recommendations and we headed off to the V&A waterfront first by taxi, to enjoy a wonderful meal at Balthazar's before going back to the hotel.
After a really yummy breakfast, our first full day found the weather chucking it down so Jo produced a list of 10 things to do in Cape Town when it rains. Simple, but really impressive.
The location, in Tamberskloof, is great, very central and easy to get to and from. There are a number of restaurants 5 minutes walk away on Kloof Street and we had another gorgeous meal at a Mozambiquan restaurant there.
Leaving the hotel was just far too soon - we enjoyed everything about our stay and would recommend it to anyone, and hope to go back again when we're next in South Africa. Just wonderful.

We booked Derwent House having seen the reviews on Trip Advisor and as everyone else has said it is brilliant.
We came here after spending 4 days on safari and from the moment we arrived everything was perfect. The hotel is really nice inside and out. The staff are impecible and so so helpful.
As I'm running out of adjectives, here is a list of what we really liked:-
*Breakfast (included) - Better than what you would get at a marriot/hilton/etc.
*Honesty Bar - excellent idea, far better priced than a minibar.
*Complimentary cakes.
*Invaluable advice about what to do and how to get there.
*Service - Someone will always book restaurants/taxis/other reservations. You really do get 5 star service.
*Decor - Really smart. We loved the Nelson Mandela art work throughout the hotel.

If you stay in Cape Town stay at this hotel.

My wife and I stayed at the Derwent for the first 6 days of our 22 day visit to South Africa. On arrival at 9.30 am from our overnight flight we were warmly greeted and informed that our room was ready for us. Throughout our stay all the staff were extremely helpful and attentive, from restaurant suggestions and bookings to the most delicious pancakes I have ever eaten ,a must at breakfast time! It was so good we decided to book the last 2 days of our trip there aswell, ensuring a perfect end to the holiday. Many thanks to Jo, Carol and all the staff.

I traveled with my 19 year old son and we both thought Derwent House was unmatched. I felt very much at home and the staff was extra accomodating. My next visit to Cape Town will include a stay here.
