“Great Hotel in Great Location with very helpful staff....”
Reviewed January 10, 2009

My wife and I stayed at Derwent House for 4 nights in December 2008. We had a great time. Carol & Jo and their staff did an excellent job for us prior to our arrival and during our stay. We stayed in the suite room 9. Everything was great!
The pool is great on a summer day. The location is great also.
A brisk 30 minute walk to the cable car going up Table Mountain. 30 minutes walk to the V&A Waterfront. 5 Minutes to great restaurants and shops on Kloof Street and Long Street.

They also set us up with a great guide for a tour of the wine tasting region, Stellenbosch and Franschoek. Jamie from Cape Heritage tours was great and we ended up taking another tour with him through Cape Point and False Bay and to a township. Definitely ask Carol or Jo to set you up with Jamie on one of these day trips.

Overall our whole trip was excellent. And is started right at the Derwent House with breakfast every morning and their friendly staff making dinner reservations for us and booking day excursions as well.

We would highly recommend staying at Derwent House on anyones trip to Cape Town.

We only left this hotel yesterday but were so impressed that we wanted to post a review straight away. I can honestly say that we received the best service that we have ever had at any hotel, large or small. Every member of staff we came across introduced themselves personally, and Carol and Jo were so helpful and knowledgeable with regard to trips and restaurants, and booked anything we wished for us. They even gave us a list of recommended vineyards to visit at our next destination, Franschoek, and tried to book a restaurant for us in the village.

The cooked breakfasts were fantastic and the honesty bar/kitchen was very well stocked. The decor throughout the hotel (particularly the lounge/dining area) is gorgeous.

I can wholeheartedly recommend this hotel to anyone wishing to stay in Cape Town and cannot image receiving better service at any hotel in the city.

Sorry about the late review but still reeling from the great time in SA and married life!

After an amazing three day wedding weekend, we flew to Cape Town from Birmingham via Dubai. Long way to fly to South Africa but much cheaper than going from Heathrow (and opportunity to buy cigs for £6 for 200 on the way).

Eventually arrived at Cape Town airport and it was great to be greeted as friends and driven to the beautiful Derwent House boutique hotel. We were both over joyed on arrival and to be shown to our great room. Everything about the hotel was wonderful. As others have said it felt so homely and unlike so many other hotels the personal touch immediately made us feel like we had made an inspired choice.

The location is spot on. Being able to wake up and look at Table Mountain crouded in mist (it was spring so we had variable weather - four seasons in one day at times) and also look out over Cape Town was wonderful.

Carol, Jo and their staff (Bongani was the perfect host to a rugby match at Newlands -Western Province for any rugby fans) were non instrusive but always there for you should you need anything, information or a taxi to go somewhere. We particularly enjoyed the evening fire and drinks from the honesty bar (just write down what you take - lovely bottled beers, wine etc at very reasonable prices).

We found lots of places to eat locally - very safe to walk to. Our particular favourite was the Blooze Bar (www.bloozebar.com) where Ian the owner was a wonderful host and introduced us to 42 dice game (I think it was that but after a lot of shots I'm not so sure!!!!). Took a while to get up the next day!

Overall I would recommend that most people would have a fabulous enjoyable stay at Derwent and if ever in the region again that is where we would go.

Thanks to all the guys at Derwent for a wonderful start to our honeymoon and really hope to see you again.

I've travelled all over the world and this has to be one of my favourite hotels and we had a great time. A boutique place with personal service by the owners. Rooms vary in size and amenities so look at the website before you book. The living areas have been carefully designed and are very pleasant for relaxing. The honesty bar worked very well and made it far easier to have a casual drink before or after dinner. The owners were really helpful in arranging things to do whether it was trips or restaurants and had great local knowledge.

The only thing to think about before booking this hotel is location. Based in a very residential location rather than the tourist district does have advantages but it does mean it is further to go to get to large numbers of bars and restaurants compared to some places. However if you're prepared to walk around then there are a number of places within walking distance. We walked around a fair amount including in the evening and never had any problems but you should of course exercise common sense. Taxis are inexpensive but they can take a while to come when ordered so this does need factoring into timings.

I'm unlikely to have to go back to Cape Town any time soon but if I did I would definitely want to stay here again.

We booked to stay at Derwent House as the place (Cape Cove Guest House) that we loved when we last came to Cape Town 4 years ago had closed down. We found it on tripadvisor.com where it was highly rated (number 1 in Cape Town in fact).

We had loved Cape Cove so much and so we had high expectations, and were pleased to say that Derwent House not only met but exceeded them.

The guest house was established only in about 2006 by Jo and Carol from the UK who bought and converted what sounds like a rundown house into a 10 room guest house that is very stylish, modern and with a real personality.

They had no previous experience of running a guest house or hotel, and so it is a testament to their determination and ability to understand what travellers need that they are able to achieve and then hold the top rated position in all of Cape Town on tripadvisor!

This is through, in my view, due to a combination of a few key things:
- Location. Derwent House is in Tamboerskloof, a largely residential area near the base of Table Mountain. From some rooms you have views of the iconic mountain, and even from the pool. But also it is a quiet neighbourhood so feels relaxing and calm, but is easy by car to get to the busy V&A and you can walk to Kloof Street which is fast emerging as a road of hot restuarants and bars.
- Jo and Carol. The 2 gals are very active and you not only feel they have a strong grip on and involvement in every aspect of the service and offer, even when they are not on site, as their staff are very well trained. They also seem to know everything that happens, I assume they must have a system of recording things by everyone as everyone knows of any issues you had (no matter how small). They are a mine of information, having tried all the places they recommend and seek feedback on places constantly. They used to be nurses at one point and this is probably where their skill in being people focused but with discipline that comes from that training!
- Value for money. The rates are very fair and reasonable for the offer.
- Added Nice touches and features:
- free passes for the huge and very modern Virgin Active Gym at Wembley Square. This is a lovely gym and has lots of fit and good-looking inspirational eye candy to admire while working out!
- free wireless internet access throughout the hotel. As a regular hotel stayer for work, I wish more hotels would do this! There is also a laptop in the lounge if you don't bring your own.
- turn down with yummy chocolate and a small scroll with next day's weather and "this day in history". My only thought would maybe it would be even better if it was more Cape Town focused with some more on history and facts and features.
- the breakfast is very good and both hot cooked as well as cereal etc. There is a good choice including pancakes and French toast.
- then as well as the fully stocked honesty bar, there is coffee and teas plus cake all day and night (with free sherry and port). It was great to come home after dinner and have a coffee and port sitting outside on the deck relaxing.
- great pool and deck. When we arrived we were worried it would be small and feel crowded. But it seems people only really stay in Cape Town for 4 or 5 days and head out most days and we had the deck and pool to ourselves most days
- lack of families and kids. A boon. There was one family with a gal of about 14 and young lad of about 10 but they were out every day. But we did not have families and kids. I think that may be a policy.

Derwent House attracted a very specific crowd, which also helps. This may come from the fact that they do not really promote themselves other than the business that comes from tripadvisor and word-of-mouth. I joked that the clients were the "tripadvisor generation" as mostly they were 30 and 40 something professional couples with a fair contingent of gay male couples who would not want to be a gay guest house catering for singles and the party crowd.

We stayed in Room 4, which had both a separate bath and shower and great views of the mountain. There are 4 rooms in the main building and these seem to be slightly larger and more unusual shapes than the 4 by the pool. Those rooms seem smaller and only have showers. The rooms 5 and 6 are downstairs and open right onto the pool deck and so may feel less private.

We loved it. We will come again!

What would I change

- black out curtains (bring eye shades as very bright in the morning!)

My husband and I were at Derwent House for 3 nights in October, and had a lovely experience. When I booked the room by email several months prior, Carol sent a helpful email advising us to book tickets to Robben Island in advance (invaluable advice), asking if we needed to rent a car, and being generally helpful. She arranged for a car rental agency to provide a quote for us as well, and was very pleasant in answering various questions we had.

On arrival, we were picked up at the airport without a hitch and welcomed at Derwent House. Carol offered us dinner reservations for that evening at Aubergine, where we had a wonderful meal. Throughout our stay, she and Jo were incredibly helpful with dinner recommendations and reservations (they were able to get us in at Ginja at the last minute - it was amazing!), as well as advice about tours and general activities.

Carol also provided us with great directions down to Cape Point (complete with warnings about closed roads) and over to the Winelands. She then gave us recommendations for dinner in the Winelands and made us a dinner reservation for when we returned to Cape Town, even though we weren't even going to be staying at Derwent House at that point (!).

The entire staff was warm, welcoming and helpful for our stay. We were in Room 9, which is large, clean and elegant and has a very nice private deck. It was too cold for swimming, but the pool area was nice to sit around and enjoy a drink from the honor bar. It was great to have the bar and snacks around, especially as we were adjusting to the time difference and hungry at odd hours. Breakfast was very good, with a nice buffet of yogurt, cereals and fruits, and hot breakfast to order. The omelets are enormous.

Overall, our stay at Derwent House was very enjoyable. The level of hospitality and personal care is much higher than we are accustomed to, and we really appreciated it. We would definitely stay there again.

  • Liked — The simplicity, elegance and great service.
  • Disliked — The French press coffee makers (I had bad luck with them)
