Southern Sun Waterfront Cape Town
Ranked #32 of 110 Hotels in Cape Town Central
Certificate of Excellence
Reviewed August 18, 2007

We stayed at the Southern Sun in July, on a 3 centre Virgin holiday from the UK.

We upgraded from what was given in the brochure and very pleased that we did. The location was fab, near to the V&A waterfront, and all city attractions. Hotel provides a shuttle bus to the waterfront that leaves every half an hour, up till 11pm, we used this all the time for going out in the evening for a meal.

The rooms there are lovely, all facilities you need, sep bath and shower, comfy beds with nice duvets.

Breakfast eat all you want buffet had a great range of food, similar to what you would get on an all inclusive 5* hotel.

The hotel was used by a lot of business guests, but this is good, as it makes the staff extremely efficient and courteous. Reception were very helpful, any probs they will sort immediately, the concierge deserves a mention, they will book your tours, advice on weather, taxis, any info you want really. And its open 24 hours.

If going out in evening, V&A had a wide range of different restaurants and a shopping mall to have a mooch around, also cinema (very cheap by UK standards!), lots of coffee shops. A supermarket for those late night snacks and toiletries you might need. Evening meals in restaurants was of a very high standard, 3 course meal with bottle of good S African wine, drinks and tip was average £25. Recommend The Greek Fisherman and Societe which is voted best by the locals for something a little extra special and romantic.

Whilst in Cape Town, we did Table Mountain, White Shark cage diving at Gansbaai (recommend White Shark Ecoventures - look at their website, booked from UK), full day tour to Cape Point, Stellanbosch. Recommend the aquarium for a couple of hours to chill out looking at fish!

One thing I'd like to say about the safety situation, well, we didn't see anything to comprimise your safety, okay, we were sensible and stayed to well populated areas, don't go out on your own at night etc, but I was a bit worried about this before going and not once whilst I was there did I feel threatened or concerned about anything.

Well better late than never, we stayed here late April '07 and loved every minute of it. My wife and I had six nights at this hotel and were more than happy with the service we recieved, firstly from the greeting and offer of sweets and refreshments as you walked in the door , to the efficient and hassel free checkin process, to the concierge to whom nothing was a problem and the room service staff who everyday did a wonderful job.

The hotel itself is in a wonderful location just a short stroll to the V & A waterfront shopping complex (which is being expanded all the time) which took us about ten minutes to walk, but for those less inclined there is a shuttle service which runs all day at about half hour intervals to and from the complex which we were able to use for free.

The hotel was situated at the bottom of the famous Table Mountain which we were able to view from our room window, the room itself was excellent size with more than ample space and a separate bath and shower in the bathroom was a plesant surprise.

The pool, although small was apealling, but the weather made it to cool to use, maybe next time........

All in all we would not hesitate to recomend this hotel to anyone as our stay there was one we will long remember.

The welcome my mum & I received was delightful. There was a young lady called Theodora who simply lovely and made us feel special as soon as we entered the hotel. This holiday being a special treat to my mum, I could not have chosen a better hotel. The staff were pleasant! The room was spacious & comfortable. I will definitely recommend anyone wanting to be in the heart of Cape Town to choose this hotel. Loved it!!

Very pleased with this hotel. It was easy to find and easy to park (although they probably should waive the R10 per day parking fee) and
pretty central to most Cape Town attractions.

The service was spot on with a free shuttle bus to & from the V&A Waterfront and complimentary drinks and sweets in the foyer. Bars & restuarants were good & reasonably priced and the buffet breakfast was more than enough to tide you over till dinner. Concierge service was also good as they sorted out a car hire problem for us even though we didn't book it with them.

All in all, thoroughly recommend this hotel

We stayed here 8 nights as part of our trip to South Africa. The locality of the hotel was perfect. We used the hotel shuttle bus which runs every 30 minutes until 11.30p.m. After a couple of days we walked to the waterfront which was only a a short distance.
The breakfast buffet is excellent with a wide selection to suit every taste. The restaurant offers a really good menu and the quality of the food superb and very reasonably priced.
The down side was the housekeeping for the rooms, items were not replenished by forgetfulness rather than intentional, and everyday a team of supervisors checked the room was cleaned to our satisfaction - which was good.
This is spotlessly clean hotel with all members of staff really friendly and helpful, after a few hours you felt you had formed a friendship with them.
I would definitely stay here again.
