“strange hotel”
Reviewed February 10, 2009

Mandela Rhodes Place probably was a condo where not all the apartments were sold so it has been converted in a sort of residence - hotel.
There isn't a real lobby but the reception is at the entrance of a building with other amenities. The rooms are very huge, and equipped with amenities typical of a residence (washmachine, kitchen, dishes, etc..), but all the hotel suffer of its absence of cozyness..it is "cold".
the location is quite good, very close to the gardens and the malay quarter, but far from the waterfront.

Have just returned from a 2 week stay at this property, which was a wonderful experience overall.

APARTMENT:
We stayed in a 2-bedroom Kendall apartment and found it to be extremely modern and well-appointed. Both bedrooms had very comfortable beds and their own separate bathroom. The master bedroom had a large walk-in wardrobe room which had a safety deposit and ample storage space, as well as a full-length mirror inside the wardrobe door. The main bathroom had a bath and a standing shower, while the other bathroom only had a shower. Both showers had floor-to-ceiling glass doors so no problems with overflowing water as is the case in some hotels! One thing was that there was little or no vanity space, just a stand-alone basin, which was sometimes a little annoying! The bathrooms were also a bit dark.

There was also a living/dining area and a spacious gourmet kitchen, which we did not use but which appeared to be fully equipped - fridge, freezer, stove top, oven, cutlery, crockery etc.

There was also a washing machine and dryer, as well as a vacuum cleaner, in the apartment, which was extremely useful!!

The housekeeping at times was a little slack, i.e. there would sometimes not be enough towels left, or no bath mat left etc. but this is just a minor complaint.

CORRIDORS:
Another reviewer mentioned the breeziness in the corridors, and I have to agree. The property is several buildings grouped together to form a sort of atrium effect, and the corridors are semi "open-air". Ours was on a top floor and right at the edge of the building so it was often extremely windy and a bit rainy when trying to get to our door! Fortunately, we had good weather most of the time so this hardly affected us, but I'm not sure how practical it would be in the depths of winter!

BREAKFAST:
Our rate included full breakfast at Synergy restaurant, although there was also a continental option. The breakfast was plentiful and had 4 types of cereals (corn flakes, bran, muesli and rice bubbles), various cold meats, fruit (rock melon, watermelon, pineapple, papaya), yoghurts, bread/toast and pastries, fruit juices, soya milk etc. Hot dishes included grilled tomatoes, bacon, scrambled eggs, mushrooms, beef and pork sausages. You could also order poached eggs (or anything else) from the kitchen. The quality of the food was very good and the room was also bright and sunny, right by the pool.

POOL:
We did not actually use the pool, but did sit by it occasionally, or on the sun deck. They have a variety of cheap cocktails (R25-35) which we tried, although the service was quite slow on the evening we went. Admittedly, they did not charge us for the first round due to the delay, and also provided complimentary snacks, which was good PR.

DINING:
Synergy does do dinners (quite expensive), but we ate every night at the new restaurant in the lobby called Doppio Zero. It has an excellent variety of Italian-inspired food at very reasonable prices - steaks, fish, lots of pizzas, chicken schnitzel, lots of pastas, toasted sandwiches, hamburgers, cakes, gelatos, sorbets, the list goes on. It was just the sort of restaurant we like - simple, good quality food at decent prices, with excellent service, right on our doorstep. The atmosphere is great (informal but sophisticated), and so are the staff. It is a very new restaurant (though part of the Doppio Zero chain, well-established in Johannesburg), and I would highly recommend for people to support it and dine there, whether they are staying at Mandela Rhodes Place or not. It is open daily from 7am to 11pm, so you can go there for breakfast, lunch and dinner. We ate there for 12 nights in a row, and also some lunch times, to give you an idea of the good service and variety of food!

STAFF:
The staff at the hotel reception, concierge and in the breakfast room were always extremely friendly, efficient and helpful, as was the case with most other Capetonians we met - very friendly people!

SECURITY:
The hotel also had excellent security - each lift section (there was a separate one for each apartment building) was guarded by a security person who inspected your key card before opening the door for you to get to the lift. I thought it was a very good idea.

LOCATION & TRANSPORT:
The hotel is located on Wale St. and in St. George's Mall, which is a nice place to stroll through during the day, with lots of markets and shops. Greenmarket Square is also nearby. About 2 mins walk down Wale St is the Slave Lodge museum, which is worth a visit, and next door are the Company's Gardens, also a very nice place to take a walk. The hotel has a complimentary shuttle bus to the V&A Waterfront at 12:00, and can also organise a complimentary pick-up at 4:30pm. Otherwise a shuttle costs R50...I think a taxi fare is about R80. It's only about a 10 min drive. I guess it could be walked, but we never did. We also found taxis in Cape Town to be safe and reliable, and used them to be taken to various locations including Camps Bay and Canal Walk during the day.

TOURISM:
We also dealt with the tour agency Compass Travel whose office is located in the hotel lobby. We did 3 tours with them - a half-day tour to the cheetah farm at Spier, a full-day tour to Aqila game park and a half-day township tour. Our airport transfer was also arranged by them. The staff and drivers there were all very good, and I would recommend them to anyone interested in doing tours in and around Cape Town.

Cape Town itself is a wonderful city with so much to offer - great scenery, great people, great food, diverse experiences. I also found it to be very safe - there was a lot of visible security with "Public Safety" guards walking around, police patrol cars and protection unit cars. At no point did we ever feel threatened or unsafe walking the streets during the day. We did not walk the streets at night at all, so I cannot comment.

Our stay at Mandela Rhodes was very comfortable. All staff were amazingly helpful and gave us good advice whenever we asked. Breakfasts were good, with choice of continental, hot english, or both.
The insides of the hotel get quite breezy, as rooms are essentially within four separate, but connected towers. However, there is no problem with coldness in rooms.

The kitchen was fully equipped, although we didn't manage to use it as only had 2 nights in Cape Town.

Location-wise, its just near Long Street and also a short taxi ride or drive to the waterfront (the hotel offers a free shuttle at 12pm and 4pm I think each day).

I'd definitely recommend and would stay again if/when I return to Cape Town.

  • Liked — Our suite had a large, spacious living area, with flat screen tv and hi fi
  • Disliked — Cold breezes in the hallways/corridors outside the room

Stayed here during the first leg of our South Africa holiday. Arrived late Sat night and before even speaking a word, I was greeted by name by the receptionist. Certainly a nice way to begin our stay! Service throughout the hotel is extremely friendly. Stayed in a two bedroom apartment which was very comfortable. Some touching up of the paint work in places is required but nothing to complain about. Ate in one of the restaurants one night and had a very pleasant meal. Again, the service from the waiting staff was excellent. Visited the indoor winery in the lobby and sampled the various wines they have on offer. A nice place to relax if you want somewhere else to go instead of the bar! Very central location but taxis can be ordered at the front desk if required. Would love to visit Cape Town again and would certainly consider staying at the Mandela Rhodes Place again!

  • Liked — Central location, friendly service
  • Disliked — Maintenance of the building in some areas could be improved - paintwork etc

We got a great rate online for a two bedroom two bath unit ($133/night) that our travel agent was not able to get so we booked the hotel on our own.The apartment was very large-two bedrooms each with a bath, plenty of towels, two hair dryers, washer and dryer etc... The kitchen was fully stocked with silverware, glasses, hot water pot for making coffee or tea etc...We arrived on a Sunday so we were unable to buy a bottle of wine in a store but we were able to buy a bottle in the restaurant on the upper level of the hotel. The hotel is walking distance to the restaurants on Long Street and also to the Greenmarket square market. We went to the wine bar on the ground floor of the hotel on one evening and enjoyed trying all the different wines- we ordered a cheese platter and then you buy a wine card and insert the card above each wine that you want to try- you have a choice of a sample size, 1/2 glass or full glass. It seemed to be a popula place for a Monday night.

  • Liked — large size of the unit
  • Disliked — slight odor around the dryer when you first enter the unit

Our stay at the Mandela Rhodes Pace Hotel was excellent. The service was first class as were the facilities. We had several excellent meals at the hotel restaurant and every request we made of the staff was fullfilled. The location is great, within two blocks of Long Street and an easy walk to the Malay Quarter. I would definitely reccomend this hotel and woud want to stay there again. We were there for almost two weeks.

MRP is a very big hotel and apartment place. Situated in the center of the city, provides good access to almost everywhere. Some good things about my stay:

1. Friendly and helpful people
2. Spacious appartment
3. Excellent and helpful Business Center
4. Very good breakfast and restaurant at the 7th floor
5. Great feeling of security 24/7

Some bad things about my stay:

1. Very noisy hotel. My apartment (Fairbairn side) did not have double glazed windows externally or internally, resulting to very bad sleeping in the night and not so relaxing afternoons
2. Apartment poorly maintained, close to get injured once from a glass self in the bathroom about to fall down
3. Some unexperienced employees that could not handle client's requests or keep their records updated (i.e. on my late check out) gave a rather bad feeling about staying there.
