“Very good stay in a central location”
Reviewed April 20, 2013

The Hotel and its rooms are very modern, spacious large and clean. We had a 2 bedroom, 2 bathroom on 5thy floor. Good location in the center of town, close to V & A and reasonable rates charged for the car parking. Can be a little noisy at night, especially at weekends. Staff good and helpful. Very good italian restaurant in the hotel.

Arrived early and was able to check in early for no extra cost. All staff were very friendly and efficient. The apartment very modern, spacious and of high quality. Very central close to many tourist locations. Would highly recommend.

We stayed a total of six nights at the Mandela Rhodes hotel, split into two visits with a one-night break in the middle (during which we traveled to Stellenbosch). We booked the hotel through Expedia and pre-paid. In hindsight, I think we could have done better on the rate booking through the hotel, so I would advise checking closely before booking -- I should have paid more attention.

The hotel has a great location, in a nice and safe neighborhood. There is on-site underground parking which, I was pleased to learn upon check-out, was very reasonable at only 50 Rand per night, with in-and-out priveleges. The hotel itself is a somewhat weird combination of buildings, with a tall tower (which I believe may be residences and traditional hotel rooms...I'm not sure), and a shorter building comprising large apartments. The two buildings were evidently separate at one time, and joined together. Though joined, there is still open roof on the sixth floor, and this allowed for the wind during a couple of days of tremendous wind, to howl through the hotel and make quite a the ruckus. The door to our apartment was constantly shaking during the storm, making it sound like someone was trying to get in. This isn't a fault on the hotel -- just an observation that you may want to bring earplugs with you.

Both apartments we had were very nice, with two bedrooms, two large and well-appointed bathrooms, a living room and dining room/kitchen. We were very pleased with the accommodations. Unlike some apartment hotels, there was daily maid service as well.

There is a concierge who was quite helpful to us, and who is on duty for extended hours. We never got to use the rooftop pool, but it looked quite nice, as did the gym facility. We did eat in the hotel's restaurant on two occassions, and both meals were excellent. There is also a coffee shop attached to the lobby. It seems that most guests have a breakfast buffett included in the room cost, but our pre-booked rooms through Expedia did not. This is another reason I wish I had compared prices between Expedia and the hotel website more closely before booking.

The hotel abuts a pedestrian area, and is very close to the St. George square. It is worth noting that there are not a lot of restaurants within safe walking distance for an evening meal. I think you'd have that challenge anywhere you stay in Cape Town, and traffic nor parking were never a problem to go elsewhere to eat.

Overall I would give the hotel high marks. Detractors to me were not really the hotel's fault; we had several nights of horrendous winds and it was near impossible to get a good sleep. Our bedroom that faced the street had the outside wind noise, and the room which looked out to the atrium had even more noise, as the wind was shaking all of the doors. Again, bring earplugs and you'll be fine. The hotel is a fine, fine choice.

Location is very central, if you are looking for some retail experiences it is worth going to the V&A Waterfront rather than the local shops to the hotel. Parking was good and very secure. I did not use the restaurant or the spa so can't comment on those.

The apartment we had, had a great view of table mountain.

We booked a 2-bedroomed suite in the Tower and were not disappointed. Well equipped kitchen, dining area and TV area plus 2 ensuite bedrooms and an extra toilet. The balcony was big enough for a table, 4 chairs and two bicycles. The gym was good although could benefit from having some gym mats. The only down side is the intermittent nature of the internet and the fact that the "free portion" given by the hotel runs out very quickly and then you have to buy time for a service which is not reliable. Why oh why do hotels insist on being stingy with internet provision. Other than than, we were happy to have convenient parking in the basement and a supermarket close by. the local restuarants were good but beware if being hussled by beggars on your way home when it is after 9.00pm. Although Cape Town is much more relaxed than Joburg, don't drop your guard. by the way, we had a couple of great massages in the Chinese staffed Spa - really effective. However, we tried the restaurant on the ground floor but didn't like the slow service. it is a shame that they don't do more with the restaurant around the pool area. They could have some funky ibiza style music and open earlier to catch the brunchers but..they don't! Instead, there is no atmosphere and nothing very attractiive about it. Lunch food was okay though.

Room Tip: Choose the Tower

We loved this hotel in Cape Town. We booked a weekend package through Kulula.

The staff was friendly and well trained, our room was clean and well equipped. We enjoyed daily a delicious breakfast in the Doppio Zero restaurant in the hotel.

Room Tip: The two bed superior room was very nice, although the view from the lounge was not nice.

this hotel has it all. location location location, next to Company's Garden, Long Street, flee market, everything is within walking distance. Hop on Hop Off bus stops across the street. We were given a room in the Tower, with 2 huge bedrooms, 2.5 bath, full kitchen and laundry, and beautiful balcony, with modern furniture. This was perfect for a family of four. They have an art gallery downstairs. the restaurant serves really good and cheap food, for american standards. there is 24 hours security at the door to the tower. nice pool, my kids use it every day we were there. concierge arranged taxi for my husband, tickets to robbens island, restaurant reservation for us. this is the best service we have gotten in cape town. by the way, we had to extend our stay for one more night and the rate the hotel gave us for the same room was almost $100 less than hotels.com. just saying.. if i were to stay in cape town central again, this is definitely the hotel to be. the one next door to MR is Taj, which charges $700+ a night, while MR is about $200, for a suite that i can move in. my husband thinks the units in the tower is actually for sale, and there are some long term residents in there, which made it more appealing as a home away from home.

Room Tip: Tower, all quiet and spacious, unbelievable value
