I stayed at the Protea North Wharf, Cape Town, for 15 nights last Feb/Mar (2006) and have booked for another 15 nights next November. Super spacious classy apartment rooms. Exellent breakfasts but not really a place for a night cap.

My family and I stayed at the Protea North Wharf for 5 days during a recent stay in Cape Town. The place was recommended by our travel agent - Jenny at Grosvenor travel.

The hotel is new. The suites are nice, large and very well appointed. Our suite had two bedrooms (one king bed, one with two twins) in addition to a couch which can be used as a bed. There is a very well appointed kitchen (with washer/dryer), a large family room and a dining table in the entry. There is a bathroom w/shower attached to the master bedroom as well as in the hall. There are three TV's, one in both bedrooms and the family room. I also liked the wood floors, it was easy to clean and you knew it was clean. The kitchen/laundry room has a dishwasher, microwave, stove, oven and fridge. Utensils and plates are included. The kitchen also has an iron. Overall it was very well appointed.

The hotel is relatively small (50 suites or so??). There is a small pool on the roof (not particularly nice) and a very secure parking garage under the hotel. There is one restaurant, we had an outstanding breakfast there every morning! Can't comment on other meals since we only ate breakfast at the hotel.

The hotel was great for a family on vacation. We were going to Swaziland after leaving Cape town. The washer/dryer let us clean all the clothes before we left - a great feature. In addition the rooms and family room were large - everyone had plenty of space. We purchased some drinks and snacks at the local stores for the suite - it worked very well.

The only trade-off with this hotel is its location at the edge of the business district (and the edge of the V&A). If you are a tourist you will spend much of your time at the V&A, a harbour development with shopping, enterntainment, restuarants, etc. It is excellent. The V&A is within easy walking distance of the Protea but it is not a pleasant walk (busy roads, crossings, etc). We chose to drive (you will want a car in Cape Town, much to see in the area). This wasn't a big deal since the V&A had ample parking. Altenatively you could stay at the V&A but I found the hotels there to be much more expensive without the nice features of the suite.

I highly recommend the Protea, particularly for families or long term stays. It is a very nice facility.

A few recommendations for SA:
- Visit the Cape of good hope. A very nice drive and beautiful scenery.
- BAIA seafood at the V&A is fantastic (smart casual, reasonable cost)
- Do a wine tour of Stellanbosch. We hired a wine tour (Steven at ----), he did a great job, even with three kids in tow!
- Robben island

One comment - the security is good but be aware of ATMs and Credit card scams. I was a victim of an ATM scam. DO NOT use an ATM if anyone is around the machine. In my case a person was standing near the machine pretending to count money he took from the machine. When I used the machine he obviously had a camera or looked over my shoulder to get my pin. Don't know how he managed to get the card info but my VISA was maxed out that day. Luckily Visa noitced and gave me a call. Don't go near a machine unless you are the only one around. I would suggest you not go alone.

But, don't let that rain on your plans - we had a great time and felt safe throughout. Enjoy the Protea and Cape Town.

We stayed here for two weeks and had a brilliant time. It was amazing to land in mid cape summer from the icy northern hemisphere and find ourselves in a crisp, contemporary hotel just 10 minutes from the beach and 5 from the V&A watefront. The rooms are apartment style - so we had a fully fitted kitchen, dining area and living area in addition to our bedroom. The textiles, soft furnishings and seating are stunning - the rooms had a sensual feel - think glass, suede, wood in rich earthy tones. Add a spotless modern bathroom and luxurious towels and a bed layered with snow whote crisp linen. The roof top pool was funky and had cool city and mountain views. Staff were professional and helpful. We loved being close to the funky bars on Long street and the amazing wares on offer in Greenmarket Aquare. We have booked our next trip!!!!
