Having been at the Chef's Warehouse in Beau Constantia for lunch, we were not quite keen on having another heavy meal for the evening. But Mama's food is far away from being heavy, fatty and swimming in sauce. She uses very light, tasteful and pure ingredients and makes simple dishes cooked with love and happiness. You can find lentils, mushrooms with spinach, chakalaka salad, coleslow with raisins, broccoli salad with cranberries, beef stew, chicken, crispy potatoes, black pudding with cream. When we there she cooked 15 mains, 12 of whom were suitable for vegetarians. To die for!!! While eating, a local band plays african and continental music, also very genuine and groovy. The restaurant also houses a very giftet painter from Angola who makes pictures using beach sand and paint, giving traditional african scenes a funky twist. Much better to buy from him then from one of the overpriced shops at V&A or long street.
As to logistics, it is better to leave your rental car at home, not because Langa is dangerous (it really isn't), but because Harlem Street is narrow and does not have parking space. We took a cab from Camps bay which charged us R 150. This money will easily be saved on the food / Drinks because these come at a very good price.
Your hotel, B&B host might discourage you from going to Mzansi because they think it is dangerous but it really is not. It is at the outskirts of the towship, 2 min away from the motorway. Just take a taxi and you are safe.
Mama, the hostess personally looks after the guests and makes sure they have everything they need. She is a very authentic person and tells the story of how she started the restaurant. She really deserves the support from travellers because the locals will not go to a township because they think it is dangerous (it really isn,t).
Don't think you can't get a place just because this place has good reviews. There is a lot of space there and you can get in even when booked at the same day. Just make sure you book, because mama prepares everything fresh every day.
This place was one of the best experiences we had in Cape Town. And we have done quite a few Super Chefs!
