“Fabulously friendly staff make this an exceptional hotel”
Reviewed June 21, 2010

Stayed here in the lead up to the World Cup, and for a first time visitor to South Africa I can't praise the staff in this hotel highly enough. Always friendly, but in a genuinely engaging way, even when you bump into them in the street!

Rooms are modern and clean. Nice sound system, Ipod lead, good flat screen TV and a lovely large bathroom with big bath and huge walk in shower.

Area is safe and a short walk from the V & A waterfront for Robben Island trips and many bars, restaurants. Also a 5 min walk from Green Point stadium.

Fantastic hotel. The people working there will do everything to make your stay and visit of Cape Town a time to remember. They arrange everything you ask for and always with a smile. Rooms are very, very, very nice and everything else is also very good. They arrange trips in the surrounding area and will help you with almost everything.

Located in up-and-coming Greenpoint, the hotel is within 10 mins walk to main city shopping centre and 20 mins walk to waterfront complex. At R95, the breakfast seemed a trifle expensive - so ate cheaper at local cafe. There was no reply to an email request for a car parking space - but in the event one was reserved.
Rooms very stylish and staff very welcoming and helpful. Would recommend.

We stayed three nights at the hotel and would like to echo some of the reviews on here. Booking online and getting the room we wanted (not facing the busy Main Road) we received a room with a splunge pool. What of course has not been mentioned (on their website) nor here is that the splunge pool is overlooked by a tall-rise (the Protea Hotel) to one side and a block of flats on the other side. There is no privacy at all on the terrace so if you do not mind being overlooked... In addition, due to the various buildings around, the terrace only has sun for less than an hour in the evenings and the pool temperature remains freezing cold thus not usable. The breakfast is not great either - I ordered a "selection of cold meats" only to be presented with something that looked like spam. It was clearly something that they had in the freezer and reheated in the microwave - some parts were cold and frozen whilst other parts were actually cooked. It was revolting. The service in general is a bit in your face and I found interaction with the staff quite overbearing.

The hotel has some of the funkiest smelling towels I have ever used - I have no clue what they wash them in but it is not pleasant. Despite finding the staff overbearing, they are, in fairness, very polite and helpful. The hotel and room itself was clean although the pools tend to attract the flying dirt around which is of course natural given its position.

I do not believe this is a 5-star hotel - at best an upmarket 3-star which is past its prime.

The attention to detail both in the rooms and by the staff was top notch. It is located very close to the waterfront and the centre of the city. A stones throw from "The Cape Quarter", the place to breakfast. The decor would grace any 5* hotel in London or New York. The owner and his staff were always on hand to give advice and help with booking trips and suggesting places to eat.
Filtered drinking water on tap in every room!

We stayed at this hotel for 9 nights in total split by a trip along the garden route. The hotel is in an excellent position midway between the V&A Waterfront and Greenmarket Square. Both are walkable and and/or an inexpensive taxi journey. It is sited on a main road but you wouldn't know it unless you are sat by the pool. It is close to the heart of the city which suited us just fine. If you want 'a room with a view' - it is not for you.

The hotel strives to present a trendy and unique decor and in many ways is succesful but I feel there is a degree of style over substance. It can be noisy due to so many hard surfaces. Services were erratic and I agree with the previous reviewer about cleanliness. The pool was not appealling due to dirt and a walk through the restaurant to get to it. Our plunge pool had cigarette butts floating in it on the day we arrived. The base was dirty and the umbrella cover was discarded in the corner and heavily covered in dust. It remained thus througout our stay. In the room, nothing felt crisp and fresh in relation to the linens and towels something that I expect from this calibre of hotel and experienced in all the others we stayed at in South Africa.

Our room was comfortable but small and quite dark due to the grey and black decor and the 'blackout coating' on the patio doors. The bathroom was excellent and almost as big as the bedroom! We didn't eat in the hotel because it just wasn't appealing enough and I noted a few poor reviews about food both here and in the hotel guest book. However, there are loads of good eating places nearby, particularly in Cape Quarter about 5 minutes walk away.

The staff are superb and could not be faulted and are the main reason for a higher rating. Very helpful, very cheery and great fun. They would arrange anything and Giles the manager gave us some top restaurant tips so trust his judgement!

I've said I would recommend this hotel to friends, and I would, but with reservations. If I returned to Cape Town, I would try somewhere else because I don't think this hotel lived up to my expectations. However, a little more attention to detail and it could be outstanding. Decor is not enough to win over the more discerning traveller.

Dear Valued Guest

Thank you very much for your valuable comments which we have noted.

In explanation to your pointers:
1) Cigarette butt in pool on arrival - unfortunately we have this from time to time whereby guests of the hotel next to us (which is taller than our building) flick items such as these onto our premises, however, I do apologise for this and will ask my cleaning staff to be more aware of this.
2) Dirty pool - unfortunately December is always a very windy month in Cape Town and as there is alot of construction / road works going on around us in preparation for the 2010 world cup soccer tournament, whenever the wind blows it dumps a lot of dirt into the pool and so virtually within an hour of cleaning the pool it can be dirty again. We normally only clean the pools once a day, however, I have instructed my staff to now clean it at least twice a day and more than that when windy.
3) Crispness of the linen and toweling - here I will agree with you that our linen and toweling is not starched however, it is spotlessly clean and it is cleaned at our in-house laundry on a daily basis. The fact that it is softer is that once washed it goes into our industrial tumble dryers, which natuarally soften the fabric and personally find it makes for a more comfortable experience.
4) Our restaurant is in it's infancy stage as I have just recently outsourced the facility to a professional restauranteer in order to achieve a better standard and to ensure a full restaurant service to our guests. It has only been open for a couple of months now, but I am working with the operator almost on a daily basis to get the facility to be more functional and appealing.
5) Dirty umbrella cover and stand - this has been noted and conveyed to our housekeeping staff and I sincerely apologise for this.

Thanks and Kind regards
GILES SMITH
