This is a boutique style hotel in downtown Cape Town, with many city centre sights an easy walk. Room (No1) in need of a freshen up decor wise and beside the lift (couldn't hear it), but clean, functional and excellent value with a superb shower. Staff very helpful and friendly, though bar and restaurant lacking atmosphere. There is a small theatre club downstairs. Self serve cooked breakfast of good quality. Just across the road from the Eastern Food Bazaar - which is worth a visit. The waterfront is a 50 rand taxi (£5) away. Stayed for 5 days in November and thoroughly enjoyed our stay

The best thing about the Cape Diamond is the staff: from the cleaners to the receptionists they are without exception very friendly, charming and eager to help. I felt very welcomed here in a way that is very unusual with hotels (as opposed to guesthouses).

I booked a 'single' room via otel.com for about £23 a night. The booking had apparently not been received so there was some delay on checking in. Despite its description the room actually had a double bed. The room was quite small and would have been a bit cramped with two people. However, the bed was comfortable; there was a satellite TV, tea and coffee making facilities and a small table. The shower was hot and had good pressure. The room was serviced daily and kept very clean indeed. My room (508) seemed to have two or three external walls so it was a little cold (there was no double glazing); I needed to keep the small electric radiator on constantly. Other rooms would not have this issue, but the plus here was it was located at the opposite side of the building to the lift, so it was quiet and I got a good night's sleep. The rooms on the lower floors are quite dark because the hotel is surrounded by other tall and narrow buildings. There was no safe, though valuables could be left with reception for safe keeping. Despite these niggles, for £23 a night it was good value, particularly since breakfast was included.

There is a bar/restaurant, with a large TV showing sporting events, where meals are served. The breakfast buffet is fine and Western travellers will be satisfied. They serve lunch and dinner, with the lunch buffet being quite reasonable. The coffee is unusually good.

The location, despite some claims on here, is actually quite good. It's certainly not unsafe. You can walk around the streets of central Cape Town in a way you cannot in Johannesburg. There aren't many bars or restaurants in the immediate vicinity, but it is about 10 mins walk to the main 'drag' on Long Street where a lot of bars and restaurants are located and I did this a few times. It is close to the tourist bus routes, about 10 mins from the train station. The cathedral and parliament are just a block down.

The main drawback of this place for me, since I was there on business, was the lack of free wifi and the lack of a desk/chair in the room (there was a small table but only with a stool - not comfortable to use). Wifi was available but at a rather exorbitant cost (I think one hour was R100, something like that). There are internet cafes everywhere in Cape Town - indeed there is one two minutes from the front door, and another on the same street, one block further down, which is even cheaper (and nicer). But that's not very convenient if you're on business and need to use your own laptop. Unlike Johannesburg, where you can find free wifi in many cafes and restaurants, it is rare in Cape Town. Luckily there is a cafe called Kauai one block from the hotel where you can get 100Mb per day after registering for free (turn right out of hotel, take the next right then the next left and you will find it). I had to scour the options myself for this as the hotel staff didn't know anywhere.

In summary, it's a decent, no-frills hotel that is fine for tourists and flashpackers, but lacks the necessary facilities to be convenient for a business trip.

Room Tip: Upper floors have more light; rooms away from the lift are less noisy

We stayed in this Hotel for 4 nights at the end of an overland camping safari. It is in a centrally located position close to all facilities.
The rooms are a little small but are tastefully decorated and clean. The hot water takes a little while to come through but it is hot with plenty of pressure.
The staff are friendly and helpfull and can organise tours for you. If there are any problems they sort them out straight away.
Breakfast is a buffet in the lobby restaurant with a selection to suit most tastes
We walked eveywhere we wanted to from here and felt completely safe at all times.

THE ROOM: The rooms are very very small, no air-conditioning, the kettle didn't work, hot water in shower/bath takes FOREVER. The bathroom has no toilet brush. I had a view of a parking lot.

BREAKFAST: The breakfast was standard - nothing fancy

HOTEL: The hotel is situated in a BAD area of Cape Town. Not safe at all. The hotel has no shuttle. The hotel has no parking. The lifts are old and the rooms have no insulation - you hear the lift every time it gets used....

PRICE: The price is not worth the area....

STAFF: The staff were friendly and helpful

Room Tip: I won't recommend this hotel

We stayed here at the end of a camping tour so I thought it would be nice not to have to pitch our tent. Unfortunately the bed was so hard I actually wished I had.
It is very central in the heart of town and the staff helpful and polite but I think it is very over priced for what it offers. We moved to the Rouge on Rose and it was much nicer, had better beds, rooms with cooking facilities and a living room for much less.
Nothing really wrong with this place but think there is a lot better places you can get for the money.
