“Possible Hippo sightings”

Rondevlei Nature Reserve
Reviewed June 26, 2014

This is a perfect place to see a huge variety of birds. I was very lucky to find a pair of Fish Eagles soaring in the sky above. The bird hides are perfectly situated all along the nature trails. All are well marked out.
Some lovely viewing decks with telescopes on them to view birds in the distance. And if you lucky you could maybe even see a Hippo or two.

I'm a birder so I enjoyed spending about an hour here walking the trails and viewing the ponds from the towers and blinds. Some great photo ops for birds and a nice quiet place to getaway from others. If you have some free time this is worth the stop to check out the birds.

About 30 mins drive from the centre of Cape Town, clearly sign posted off the M5. Your turn left at the drive-in Nando's, then shortly right, crossing a couple of cross roads to arrive at the reserve. The area you drive through is a little down at heel but not intimidating and the parking at the Reserve is in a secure area.
Cheap entry, with a little guide book and very friendly and helpful Reserve guides. There is only 1 path which leads to all the hides including 2 tower platforms giving good views over the reserve especially the farthest one. Excellent birding with good views of Little Bittern, Malachite KF, Cape Grassbird, 2 different Ibis, pelican, darter, spoonbill, Karoo prinia. Only downside is that the reeds are encroaching a couple of the hides but that does add to a more "wild" feel to the reserve especially compared to Indaka. We really enjoyed here and will revisit.
