“Great breakfast”
Reviewed March 26, 2014

I stayed here 4 nights while visiting Cape Town. The room was spacious with a huge bath and shower. The rooms had complementary port & fruit and the bath rooms had bath salts, which I thought was a nice touch. Just outside the room we had a private terrace overlooking the pool and courtyard. The first night we were there we needed a reservation and I called reception to inquire about good restaurants. They provided two options and I told them I needed time to look them up. When I went back to reception I found that a staff member had already booked the place I wanted, without even having to tell him, which was a good idea because another staff member was trying to book the same restaurant for another couple and by that time they were fully booked. Breakfast was excellent, the cooking staff went above and beyond to make sure I had something to eat (I am a vegan). The last two mornings they cooked me tofu and it was excellent!

This was our first visit to South Africa, so we were not sure what to expect. We were pleasantly surprised. The guest house is located in a quiet road close to one of the trendy parts of town (Kloof street), with good restaurants that are almost certainly better than those in the real tourist areas around the VA waterfront in downtown Cape Town. The lady that owns it has design flair that is reflected in the decor and style throughout these two back to back houses joined by an attractive courtyard. By city standards, the rooms were reasonably sized and we were greeted with complimentary 1/4 litre of local port and fresh fruit. The rooms all have tea / coffee facilities as well as lovely home made cookies.
Breakfast was excellent with fresh fruit, breads, cheese, ham etc followed by cooked breakfast to order. Nothing was too much trouble for the staff here and special praise to Simon the night manager - a great character.
Provided you are not set on a hotel with identical rooms and modern furnishings, this is a great place to begin a Southern Cape holiday.

WE LOVED our stay at Welgelegen. It is located in a quiet neighbourhood which seemed very safe as well. We arrived after a long journey from Canada at 8am. Although our room was not ready at that early hour they provided a room so we could freshen up plus breakfast with a relaxing sit in the shade in the courtyard. I loved the breakfast and I am not even a breakfast person. I felt the omlete was the best I had in our entire 3.5 week trip in SA. The courtyard has a beautiful setting and since it was soooooo hot the plunge pool was very refreshing. We were given a great recommendation for a nearby restaurant by Fiona to the Societi Bistro so I can highly recommend that as well. We had a perfect stay and would recommend it to everyone.

This was our first experience of SA guest houses and it was lovely. The rooms were clean and spacious the staff all delightful and the breakfasts great. Nothing was too much trouble and we had meals and taxis booked for us as part of the service. Thank you for such a great start to our holidays.

Room Tip: This guest house is a reasonable walk into long st and Victoria wharf

An excellent place to begin our three week tour in South Africa, The Welgelegen is within easy walking distance of Kloof Street and several restaurants. I recommend both Café Paradiso and The Saigon as ones that we ate at, but there are several others that looked equally as good.
Both Fiona and Colleen and all of the staff are both welcoming and very helpful. The rooms are good and well-appointed and there is a good choice for breakfast.
I have just read the last 3 reviews and would generally agree with everything they say.
Thank you for a wonderful 5 nights.

Very good base for exploring Cape Town. Situated in quiet back street, but very near busy Kloof Street with a huge variety of restaurants, and with a backdrop of Table Mountain. The building consists of two houses sharing a quiet pretty central courtyard with a plunge pool. Fiona and Colleen couldn't have been more helpful with restaurant bookings, and also helped us obtain tickets for the Table Mountain Cable Car. Their spirit of friendliness and helpfulness permeates through the whole team-we were treated to genuine smiles and friendliness from everyone every day. The breakfast on offer was generous, with a good variety of items available. Our room was nice with a good sized comfortable bed. Possible to walk to the V&A waterfront in about 40 mins. ( longer, with a detour to Bo Kaap for some fantastic photos). We felt safe in this district, and although not central, we felt lucky to have chosen this hotel. Recommend Cafe Paradiso for a great meal, very close by.

We stayed 3 nights, and loved it - very stylish, fantastic breakfast, and best of all perfect location within 5 mins' walk from some great trendy restaurants; and 10 min drive from Table Mountain. Thanks to Colleen & Fiona and the team for looking after us so well
